Poetry. Art. IN THE CIRCUS OF YOU is a deliciously distorted fun house of poetry and art by Nicelle Davis and Cheryl Gross. Both private and epic, this novel-in-poems explores one woman's struggle while interpreting our world as a sideshow, where not only are we the freaks, but also the onlookers wondering just how "normal" we are—or ought to be. Davis' poetry and Gross' images collaborate over the themes of sanity, monogamy, motherhood, divorce, artistic expression, and self-creation to curate a menagerie of abnormalities that defines what it is to be human. The universe of this book is one in which dead pigeons talk, clowns hide in the chambers of the heart, and the human body turns itself inside out to be born again as a purely sensory creature. This grotesquely gorgeous peep show opens the velvet curtains on the beautiful complications of life.

Review Nicelle Davis' newest book mythologizes pain, making grief, anger, disgust, and fear bearable by transforming them into finely wrought poems. These poems are filled with sharp edges, dissections, illusions, and images of flight, both in their language and in the ways they occupy the page. They are perfectly matched by the drawings of Cheryl Gross, who translates Davis' poetry into an equally grotesque, equally eloquent visual language. In the Circus of You is a visceral spectacle of controlled excess; it dismantles the three rings we use to contain our most domestic horrors and shows us the way through vulnerability to release. --Evie Shockley, author of the new blackAccompanied by Cheryl Gross' illustrations of stretched flesh and biomechanical anatomies, In the Circus of You writhes in a fever dream of divorce, depression, and an undercurrent of poverty. Nicelle Davis directs a cast of disfigured pigs, desiccated pigeons, and circus freaks in poems whose forms are often cinched with wasp-waisted girdles or filed into jagged angles. Never simple oddities, these afflicted characters and musical poems amount to a harrowing account of loss and how one has to fracture herself in private to appear unbroken in public. Don't miss Davis' acts of lurching grace and terrible beauty. --Douglas Kearney, author of Patter

By RL Black As a lover of experimental form, I'm always looking for clever and fresh ways to tell a story, and I was thrilled to see how Nicelle Davis does it here. In the Circus of You is a book of poetry, yes, but it's also a complete story. Each poem stands beautifully on its on, but at the same time you can step back and see a story arc, and even more importantly to me, a character arc. These poems engaged me right from the start, connected me to the narrator, I'm invested, and by the end I feel I know this person. And the illustrations by Cheryl Gross are the icing on the cake. It's really a beautiful collaboration between the author and the illustrator.Like all the books put it out by Rose Metal Press, this one has become a favorite. It's one that I carry with me, and I'm constantly going back to it. Highly recommend this book to all my writer friends, especially those of you who enjoy experimental form.*FTC Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

A Macabre Circus, but We Cannot Look Away By Terry Wolverton In the Circus of You chronicles the break-up of a relationship, heartbreak and betrayal, separation, and the numbness that can set in when you realize that nothing is going to be the way you expected. In the hands of a lesser poet, this could be maudlin or sappy, but Nicelle Davis uses the metaphor of a macabre circus to render these feelings in ways both vivid and fresh. She is adept with imagery and creates a sense of abstraction that never lets us off the hook of the emotion but makes it bearable, sometimes even beautiful. The sensibility of the illustrator, Cheryl Gross, seems quite different than that of Davis' poems, but the juxtaposition works.

The beauty of imagery By E I look forward to reading this beautiful book over and over: I want to revisit its gorgeous images, both those created by illustrator Cheryl Gross and poet Nicelle Davis, who has created an exquisitely textured world of animals and their bones, circuses and the folk who staff them, pain and the rupture points that bring it. This work is so vital, with every snap of a line break bringing a small moment of fresh joy. This is the kind of book that continues to offer more with every reading--I look forward to the next!
