From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Though Burnham breaks no new ground here, this is nevertheless an appealing tale with an engaging narrator. Ten-year-old Teddy Mars, the sixth of seven children, wants to stand out from his siblings and do something meaningful. Unfortunately, in addition to having five older sisters (a singer, twins, a sports addict, and a bully), he is plagued by an energetic younger brother whom he rightly calls, The Destructor. Little brother Jake adores Teddy but expresses his feelings by ruining most of his older sibling's prized possessions. Teddy's solution is to move out of their shared bedroom and into a tent in the backyard. He also finds respite in reading "Guinness World Records" books and in helping an old neighbor with his homing pigeons. Those two pastimes come together as Teddy attempts to set his own world record. His actual accomplishment won't come as a surprise to astute readers, but Teddy is so amiable and put-upon, he'll find plenty of fans who'll want to read more in the promised series. The book's format, with monthly chapters divided into smaller subchapters, makes this a good choice for reading logs, and the report Teddy has to do on pigeons makes this book an ideal pairing with a nonfiction title on these urban birds.—Marie Drucker, Malverne Public Library, NY

Strange but true, ten-year-old Teddy Mars has a big dream. He wants to break a world record. And he won't let anything stand in his way. Not his five (FIVE!) older sisters. Not his teacher, who thinks he daydreams too much. And definitely not his little brother, Jake, also known as THE DESTRUCTOR!
With his best friends, Lonnie and Viva, by his side, Teddy is sure to make his dream come true—as long as he can keep The Destructor away!

I started reading it a little at a time, because it made me laugh and I wanted to stretch it out and savor it. After a certain point though, I just had to keep reading.....could not put it down. I had to know what happened. I chuckled, and laughed out loud, and yes, I even cried a little (so sweet)! I want to buy one for every child I know. (yep, I'm a grown-up! doesn't matter! I love it!)

Teddy Mars: Almost a World Record Breaker By afunhouse I received an ARC of this book from the publisher.Teddy Mars: Almost A World Record Breaker is a humorous (fart jokes, bed wetting, little brother trouble, cat boxes, world record breaking attempts) story about the daily life of a ten year old boy living in a family with 7 children, two parents and a cat. Teddy's main goal in life is to get into the World Record book - any way he can - so, many of the short, easy to read chapters focus on those attempts. Teddy is a likable character for those of us who appreciate a bit of irreverence and the real life feelings, situations and messes that come with trying to find one's place in a big family.Teddy has both a best friend (Lonnie- smart and wants to be a Jedi when he grows up) and a new friend (Viva- an only child who is curious about life in a big family and a fellow world record book reader) who are good listeners, great problem solvers and give him advice and support throughout the story. The relationship between these three is funny and charming.Teddy's elderly neighbor, known as Grumpy Pigeon Man, begins the story as a gruff old guy to be avoided and ends it as a teacher of both pigeon knowledge and life lessons. The warm relationship that unfolds between Teddy and Grumpy Pigeon Man is a great part of the Teddy Mars story and one I hope we see continued in the next book in the series!

He read the entire thing in one siting, then picked it up a week later and read it again. He loves the Wimpy Kid and Big Nate books, and while there is a similarity in the humor and focus on the everyday life of a kid, Teddy Mars is pitched at a slightly younger reader, and has a gentleness and warmth that I appreciated. The story is engaging and charming, and really, really funny (from explosive vomit episodes and lots of pigeon poop to my favorite Halloween costume ever – a cat in a cat box). Teddy is a nice smart kid, and it’s great to read about his enthusiasms (art, Star Wars, pigeons) and adventures (living in a tent in the backyard). Any kid can also relate to his frustrations with his sisters and brother and parents, but it’s also fun to his imagine a life like his with a big, rollicking family. Plus hilarious illustrations and world records sprinkled throughout the story.Glad to see there are more Teddy adventures to come – we can’t wait!
