Outstanding Primer on Leadership By WT Door Col Ken Dunn, USMC (Ret) has published his contemporaneous notes from 1992to 1995 while an Artillery LtCol in an 'acquisitions' assignment at FtMonmouth NJ awaiting word of his possible selection to command one of theMarine Corps' artillery battalions - followed by his two years in Command ofthe 5th Battalion, 10 Marine Artillery Regiment in Camp Lejeune, NC. Welearn about LtCol Dunn's background as a scholar-athlete; his devoutCatholicism as someone who prays the Rosary often; his appointment to andgraduation from the United States Naval Academy - Annapolis, where heexcelled at football. In his own words, Dunn is a family man who cherisheshis wife, his children and his extended family. Like most warriors, hisleave periods are filled with family reunions. At work, he's a stickler forpersonal appearance, physical fitness, precision in all things and gettingthe job done just the way we expect Marines to do it. LtCol Dunn expects thebest of his staff and mostly he gets it. He expects more from himself. Thisis an honest book that says critical things here and there about this andthat. But overall it is a very positive book about a very positive andoptimistic leader, who led one of America's fire breathing ArtilleryBattalions during a two year period with the constant threat of instantdeployment in the early 1990s. Col Dunn had a very successful career leadingMarines, serving as an example of the finest we have to offer. He went on toattend the National War College, and to receive an EdD degree as Dr Kenneth D. Dunn - a title that is far below that of Col Kenneth D. Dunn of Marines. He continuesto serve his Nation. This is a great quick read for anyone who wants asnapshot of America's finest - the Marines - and those who lead them. It isa superb primer for junior officers of all services. "Dunn's Rules"encapsulates the leadership philosophy of this gentleman, scholar, delivererof lightning bolts - Marine Artillery Officer!

A Masterpiece!!Col Dunn delivers an unusually direct, truthful and intimate account of the responsibilities and challenges of command, marriage, fatherhood and life; especially those of a Senior Black Marine Officer and Dad. Remaining clear throughout this work are not only Ken’s leadership skills, but also his unique ability to incorporate them as an intricate part of his life in all areas of endeavor. Ken’s work is an intellectual, cognitive expression of life and command as it unfolds around him. This book will make you think. I marveled at how he motivated himself every day as he stove for perfection, effectiveness and success.Col Dunn’s leadership skills transcend those of just a Battalion Commander. He also bakes them into his roles as a husband and father. Proof of these shows in his 35+ year strong marriage, caring for his extended family, earning a PhD, and the exceptional success of his children. Remarkable achievements all. This book is not just for Marine Officers or Black Marine Officers. It is also for Officer’s wives and the children of Marine Officers. They all must know what their husbands and fathers endure, worry about and celebrate.A true leader is one who leads himself/herself when alone. Col Kenneth D. Dunn is a TRUE Leader in every sense. He represents that which is defined by the term MARINE!Go read this book.

I learned some valuable information to share with my twin boys about USMC that they may join. My friend from the high school years has made me proud. He is a model marine, father, son and brother. He continued the legacy in his family but went one step further by writing it down for his children's children. May God continue to bless his union, children and external family and friends and keep them close to the thru eternity. Martha johnson-Murrell
