About the Author Jon Pineda was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised in Chesapeake, Virginia. The recipient of a Virginia Commission for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship, Pineda is the author of the novel Apology, winner of the Milkweed National Fiction Prize and the memoir Sleep in Me, a Barnes & Noble "Discover Great New Writers" selection and a top memoir of 2010 by Library Journal. His poetry collections are The Translator's Diary, winner of the 2007 Green Rose Prize from New Issues Poetry & Prose, and Birthmark, selected by Ralph Burns as winner of the 2003 Crab Orchard Award Series open competition. An earlier version of Little Anodynes was a finalist for the National Poetry Series. PinedaOliver de la Paz is the author of four collections of poetry: Names Above Houses, Furious Lullaby, Requiem for the Orchard, and Post Subject: A Fable. There is a poem in this book By Nicholas Montemarano Pick up this book of prose poems, spend a few hours with its short, powerful, unpunctuated lines, and you'll find yourself rereading poem after poem. You will want to tell someone about it. You will want to buy a copy for anyone who likes small, perfect books. There is a poem in this book, seemingly simple, about a man struggling to write a poem while his young daughter, afraid of the rain and unable to sleep, keeps calling him. He tells her there's nothing to be afraid of, goes back to the poem. Well... best to read the poem itself; it's a gem.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. New Beat For a New Generation By Jym Cherry Harry Whitewolf’s “New Beat Newbie” is a throwback (in a good way) to Jack Kerouac’s “Mexico City Blues”. Whitewolf has a facility with words, playing with them and their sounds until the meanings twist and you get a bit of a surprise at what the ideas have morphed into.Whitewolf’s neo-Beat tendencies don’t mean the writing is imitative, only in the context that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. His poems aren’t dry homages about an age gone by, but these poems *POP* and hum with electricity off the page, just as the original Beats’ poems did when they were new. Whitewolf turns his eye to the modern world with poems titled “#Smiley Face,” or about fracking. Just when you think the rhyming and word-play is all effect, Whitewolf throws in a that points out a truth and/or will stop to make you think. One of my favorites was “where past and present co-existed, before there were linear lies”.There is also homages to his poetic predecessors Kerouac in “Ride Along With Sal” and Allen Ginsberg copying some of his rhythms but taking it in his own direction. For those who are Beat or neo-Beat, even if you aren’t, Whitewolf’s style lends itself to your reading and interpretation. You may even see the world a little differently when you’re done.

Denness "Slackers, backpackers, beatniks and Bums.The new beat is coming, start kicking your drums"What an amazing line!I am still quite new to poetry and the more I read the more I realise what I have missed out on, I blame the school I went to where I was forced to write a poem during a lesson, with no inspiration and on a topic set by the teacher, and then I had to stand up and read it in front of a class of idioms. I am now past that and loving poetry.I have only read a few bits of poetry by the Beats and New Beat Newbie transports you to a dark, seedy bar, full of smoke while somebody on a small stage throws out these words sounding like Jazz.New Neat Newbie is like a call to arms for all those angered by the greedy and powerful and who feel powerless to fight back. "Then I will vote" had me agreeing with every line. You can feel the anger in "Fly your false flags" and "Beat Elite" is really hard hitting with all its short lines.So glad I read this and it would be amazing to see Harry Whitewolf performing his work live.

Halfway through one number, the vocalist put his mike close to his mouth and yelled: “Hamburger, nothing!” I soon forget all the pious, well-argued lectures I hear about the evils of fast food corporations, however true they are. But I remember that “Hamburger, nothing!” like it was yesterday.It came to mind again as I read Harry Whitewolf’s verse collection New Beat Newbie. They’re the work of a man doing his own thing, so if you’re obsessed with the correct use of iambic pentameters, forget it. Neither are these poems to be studied or pored over. They’re best if you recite them inside your head, both finding the rhythm and enjoying his idiosyncratic use of language, without asking too many questions. Then they have real force and freshness.Whitewolf identifies with the Beat poets, and pays tribute to them in several of these pieces, notably Cider With Snyder (I wanna drink cider with Snyder/and piggy-back on Kerouac/I wanna ride on gin icebergs with Ginsberg). I can see why he does this, but I think it would be wrong to identify him too much with the Beats. He’s out there with his own very spontaneous style. And there’s an angry directness to some of these poems that owes more to the robust political culture of the British left. One of the angriest poems is the unambiguous Frack Off:Fracking, fracking, fracking.F***ing, fecking fracking.Shattering the earth. Damaging. Crack crack cracking.More subtly, Whitewolf takes on modern social norms, as in the online culture in The Invasion of Web Into Head’s Web. And in one of my favourites, We Love The Famous:We love the famous. The plastic pretties.Airbrushed arses. Fantastic titties.Hunks and comics to entertain us.Make no mistake, we love the famous.Other poems, though, are gentler. In the e-reader era, there’s a charming lament for the old fashioned book, with its stains and blemishes and personal messages on flyleaves, written by people long dead. As I love to buy, and read, forgotten books, this resonated with me. But the best poem in this collection, I think, was Ragmen, which is almost the perfect length and shape, beginning:Spit and swear with BaudelaireIn a hoo-ha boudoir odour’d lair.Join the ugly f***ing fracas.Praise the hedonists of Bacchus.Harry Whitewolf’s an original. Moreover this is a substantial collection. Poetry books can be somewhat brief and can leave you unsatisfied, but there are 37 poems in this book – some quite short, to be sure, but others longer. There’s plenty to enjoy here.As I said at the beginning, you don’t want to over-analyse these pieces. If you do, you’ll lose what makes them fly. They’re best enjoyed out loud or in a voice in your head, picking up the inventive use of language, the rhythms – and, yes, the beat. Do that, and these poems are like a big 660ml bottle of ice-cold lager on a summer’s day – the condensation running down the glass in rivulets as you savour the sharp, refreshing taste.Hamburger, nothing! Have a beer instead.

By Tim Snider I just read Maliks book of poetry for the third time (its short) and must say I was impressed with the depth and breadth of maturity he wrote. Poets, unlike other wordsmiths, view life mostly from the inside out and their prose cannot be fully understood except when viewed from that perspective. His views on life at such a young age reflect much of the inner turmoil many young people have today and even more so if they’re of mixed race. Struggles with identity in a world that views race as a self-identifying truism when nothing could be further from the truth. Struggles about who God is and how He could relate or even care about someone searching for answers to questions that the world cannot offer. Struggles and questions about love and how to relate to someone on a level beyond youthful infatuation. And finally his struggles with needing to be recognized as his own person when stereotypical responses to where you came from socially, culturally and genetically in todays world answers the question for you. I like Maliks book, not because I totally understood or agreed with everything he wrote, but because it was a very candid, truthful and yet poignant look into the heart of a young man (mature beyond his years in many ways) on this journey we call life and his quest for answers to questions that most likely (for the seeker) will yield themselves only as the journey continues.Thank you Malik for causing me to reexamine my own views on life and for challenging me to understand your perspective even more.Tim Snider ~ Author - All Things New

The first time I read "Dustpans and Thimbles" and "18 and Gone", Malik was just 14/15. To be able to write so much truth at such a young age is rare. This book of poetry is just the start for Malik, and it's a very good start!

Easy to Follow and Covers the Right Topics By Ryan Godsell As a programming novice and complete beginner to Spark, I was looking for a book which could bring together topics and principles from an early stage through to a more advanced stage, and be understandable in the process.This book did a great job of that, providing plenty of easy-to-follow examples throughout and laying everything out in a way which I could easily make sense of and take action on - vitally important being a beginner to this.I can see myself coming back to this book as reference for a long time.5 Stars!

I am learning Spark by myself and it is rather challenging, but I won't give up. This guide is great for a beginner like me, I can follow it and I have a sense of progress. Examples are clear and understandable, I like the way it is presented. The only thing I think can be improved is the size of the book. I think it can be a bit broader and cover more info, but that is a nitpick. I recommend it for every Spark enthusiast.

By Laura A friend of mine recommended this electronic book to me in order to learn some coding so I do not feel completely lost when I attend a computer science class! It's a great way for a beginner like me to learn! (I did not take a cs classs in high school). It has helpful videos and has links to the answers for exercises on the back of the e-book so you can check yourself (especially if you get tons of errors!). My friend recommended this e-book to me because it contains the majority of the .pdf files he gets in his cs classes at UGA!

By Amazon Customer Do-It-Yourself Java Games: An Introduction to Java Computer Programming by Annette Godtland is by far the best intro Java and computer programming book I have read! What makes this one so good? First, the author is obviously a natural teacher and knows how to simply and clearly convey concepts that beginners and experienced programmers need to understand. But don't be fooled, this is not your typical programming 101 book. Without falling into either the " I'll crack a bunch of corny jokes to make learning FUN for the readers" or "I'll explain how to write the 'Hello World' program in 10 different ways", DIY Java Games lets you create 16 different Java projects that actually teach you how to write Java and construct programs FROM SCRATCH. And unlike many of the programming books, ALL of these projects you create ACTUALLY WORK! For someone who has purchased dozens of Java and other programming books, I can testify that one of the most disheartening and discouraging things that happens is when you spend hours meticulously typing code exactly as the author tells you and then when you try to run your program, all you get are errors and then you have to spend hours more trying to debug exactly why it isn't working. Then, often you discover that it isn't that you mistyped something, it's that the version in the book doesn't work with the latest version of Java or Eclipse or some other mind-numbing, blood-boiling reason.If you follow Annette's easy-to-follow instructions every project works, and that gives you a sense of accomplishment and progress, because you can see the programming concepts you are learning with each project come to life. And if you somehow mistype something or don't understand a concept, there are links in every project as you progress that take you to the completed code for that section of the project.Like I said, I have purchased dozens of programming books, and while each has something that can be taken from it, on the whole they have been either too basic, too dense, too poorly written or edited, or just written by someone who really doesn't know HOW TO TEACH. Thanks to DIY Java Games by Annette Godtland I can finally say that after years of trying, I'm REALLY UNDERSTANDING the logic, syntax and structure of creating Java programs. I'm confident that if I continue to diligently practice the concepts I'm learning from Annette, I'll soon be able to confidently say, "Yes, I know how to write Java programs".

Basically what I do is download ten books, read them in the order I downloaded them, and repeat.Well this load of books I downloaded diary of Steve the noob 5 last. It was horrible. All strategies are well described and it is easy to practice. But the most surprising piece of this book is the chapter of the introduction of the baby's habits. One big one that I took from this is to not look into baby’s eyes as they are going to sleep because it will force them to concentrate on you instead of sleeping. I don’t have a kid yet, but I babysat a friend’s baby for a few hours and it let me know how much work it is! So, this book helps me to educate myself on better strategies because getting her to sleep was to most difficult part. I will be having a child in the near future, so I am happy for preparing myself early. This book won’t be the one-stop book you need, but serves as a great start.

It has some interesting viewpoints but you have to get through the intellectual bravado of his writing style. Picks great points but still missing some key points. Will contact the author personally to share those points. Otherwise one of the best writings I have encountered that attacks the macro-cosmic entity of racism (in America).

Outstanding Primer on Leadership By WT Door Col Ken Dunn, USMC (Ret) has published his contemporaneous notes from 1992to 1995 while an Artillery LtCol in an 'acquisitions' assignment at FtMonmouth NJ awaiting word of his possible selection to command one of theMarine Corps' artillery battalions - followed by his two years in Command ofthe 5th Battalion, 10 Marine Artillery Regiment in Camp Lejeune, NC. Welearn about LtCol Dunn's background as a scholar-athlete; his devoutCatholicism as someone who prays the Rosary often; his appointment to andgraduation from the United States Naval Academy - Annapolis, where heexcelled at football. In his own words, Dunn is a family man who cherisheshis wife, his children and his extended family. Like most warriors, hisleave periods are filled with family reunions. At work, he's a stickler forpersonal appearance, physical fitness, precision in all things and gettingthe job done just the way we expect Marines to do it. While the story focuses on three birds and a lamb who each experience the loss of loved ones, the symptoms and approaches are applicable to any form of trauma. The earth is groaning, and people are suffering. War, disaster, poverty, disease, and divorce affect everyone in a negative way, especially the children. These children live in a variety of settings, such as single parent, extended families, or in new families like foster care, adoptive, or in a children’s home. They may even live on the streets. Some are abused, some are taken as agents of war, some are sold. The end result is trauma - physical, emotional, sexual, spiritual, or all of the above. At the very least, these children grieve their losses. People in the new settings must make adjustments as well. At best it is stressful, even if it is positive stress. Sometimes the children seem to be thrust upon the family; a duty of sorts. All types of thoughts and feelings emerge, and as a result, conflict . . . and perhaps abuse may occur. Some families may make a conscious decision to bring one or more new children into the home. But even if the decision was based on prayer, all the family members have adjustments to make; and though there are many positives, there is a shift in the system along with losses for every family member. The author's hope is that Baby Finds Grace equips folks to navigate these changes and losses in a positive way, bring healing to children. Introduces them to 26 kind and loving words (hopefully they've heard a bunch of them already) that let them know how special they are, and how much they mean to you. It should come as no surprise that everyone doesn't necessarily form an opinion on every subject. Nor should you be shocked to hear that most opinions are uninformed. We can all give countless examples of this. Most Americans are sheeple, unable to think for themselves. They are content to follow, and many are too lazy to do the minimal research required to have an informed opinion. Their reliance on government or media sources for information makes them susceptible to manipulation. It's simply easier to be a sheeple.As a student of the preparedness lifestyle, I cringe at the media's portrayal of preppers. Initially, the brunt of the ridicule was directed at survivalists. But with the success of National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers, the concept of being a prepper hit the mainstream. Now Preppers are the target of the media's derision. I have my opinion as to why that is the case, and it has its basis in politics. It is my opinion that the media is largely left-leaning and, as a result, does not embrace the self-sufficient lifestyle that is prepping. So, if you can't join them, beat them down--repeatedly. As a recent example, consider the media's dismantling of the Tea Party movement. I see similar attacks on preppers.But, what if the Preppers are right?What if?CYBER ATTACKSimply put, a Cyber Attack is a deliberate exploitation of computer systems. Cyber Attacks are used to gain access to information but can also be used to alter computer code, insert malware or take over the operations of a computer driven network.Why would terrorists bother with an elaborate, dangerous physical operation--complete with all the recon and planning of a black ops mission--when they could achieve the same effect from the comfort of their home? An effective cyber attack could, if cleverly designed, produce a great deal of physical damage very quickly, and interconnections in digital operations would mean such an attack could bypass fail safes in the physical infrastructure that stop cascading failures.One string of 1s and 0s could have a significant impact. A serious journalistic endeavor that will leave you with a scary respect for our cyber vulnerabilities By Burt Walker, Author Bobby Akart fooled me. He sucked me in with his tantalizing, but informative and entertaining novels. He has proven to be a master story teller, but little did I know that his work in non-fiction also puts him among the best in that too. The scope of Cyber Warfare falls well beyond that of the preparedness community and should be required reading for anyone interested in threats to modern society. This is a serious endeavor into the world of cyber warfare and done with top-notch research and journalistic principles--something we don't often see in today's publishing industry. If any book should get widespread notoriety, it should be this one. I hope to see Akart on the news interview circuit soon. Written without sloppy or cheesy hints at a political agenda, it is a work that should wake us all up to a serious threat. If you're like me, you'll walk away with a healthy fear and respect for our cyber infrastructure and it's vulnerabilities.

You can check in with family and friends through various social media? Isn't everything easier now that we're in the Internet age? The answer is yes. But it is also frighteningly easy to reach out and 'touch someone'.Although life in general has become so much more streamlined, we cannot fall into absolute 'trust in the system' and complacency. Does anyone actually realize how many times that institutions, businesses (private & public) and government systems have had hacking attempts against them EACH DAY? Bobby Akart has the figures, the examples, and the preparatory steps that every human being should know and be very aware of. This is not a book to terrify you and keep you awake at night. This is an informative, factual read that is vital to assist with your own personal situational awareness. This is real. This is almost baffling in its complexity as to how vulnerable anyone can be!But it is also reassuring. It is comforting to read, understand, and implement protective and precautionary steps to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones. In today's day and age, this book is a mandatory read for your own information and attentiveness. Bobby Akart has done all of the initial research and this is the first step. Read it and then decide if it affects you....because its effects will be felt...everywhere.

By Patricia Wilson We comfortable, average Americans are so uninformed and clueless when it comes to cyber attacks, or as our president calls them, cyber vandalism. If you are like me the world of cyberspace is so complicated you just accept what you are told. Forget the research, it's too complicated. My mind won't stay focused on something I can't understand. That lack of knowledge and understanding can lead us to complacency and acceptance of whatever we are told or, led to believe, because it is easier. Ease is the culprit of being unprepared. Wouldn't you rather be prepared than caught unaware and unprepared? As a member of the general public I could go along my merry way happy in my blissful situation--that is, till TEOTWAWKI. And a greater majority of my fellow citizens would find themselves as clueless about what just occurred as I. That is where the problem lies. Too many unprepared folks who want the same things will certainly lead to survival of the fittest. I don't know about you, but I don't plan on having to fight for a crumb of bread or anything else I need to sustain my life and the lives of my family.Bobby Akart is a committed prepped who wants to share his skills and knowledge with everyone who has need of his knowledge of what it takes to survive. From Bobby's research we learn the threat of cyber warfare is very real. Does anyone remember the Sony cyber invasion of last year? Maybe it was only cyber vandalism, as the president said, or just maybe it was more. It absolutely disrupted Sony, causing delays and changes of plans. If hackers can change the plans of a huge company like Sony, with the latest technology, what can they do to our armies. In this book Bobby uses a quote from a D.C official, "...a proficient hacker entering keystrokes on a computer is one of the new faces of war..." Scary, huh? The same official continues, "Accordingly, Cyber War is now called the Fourth Dimension of Warfare." Just think of what could happen if a hacker disrupts communication, changes important plans or giving false information. How would this "vandalism," affect our troops.Yes, cyber warfare is real and it should concern every American citizen. How easy would it be for a hacker to shut down our power grids? With the right keystrokes I believe we can be left in the dark.Kudos to Bobby Akart for taking the time to write this important volume. You have provided a great service for those of us who want to be informed and prepared.As always, happy reading.
