Wonderful Collaborative By Chase In Disobedience and Democracy (1968), Howard Zinn writes, “Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it.” The same could be said from any cultural thinker or shaker who takes from the law the legality of truth and freedom and liberates those ideals from the common law. Recently we’ve seen this play out in cinematic biographies (Birdman, 2014), in the production of life histories in literature (All the Light We Cannot See, 2014), and the progression of modern science (i.e. John von Neumann’s neuromorphic computer chips), to name a few. We know from countless editions and tomes the impact of social activism, of commitment and soul-investment in change that will make the future insightful or at least more informed, and yet we focus so little on the brilliance of the present. Our words to describe change and action have come to fail and the connotations of the present, of time, again have become a re-founding process that our contemporary poets are sure to confront.Published by Bates’ own PunksWritePoemsPress, This is Not a Movement (as the title suggests) complicates the variety and distinctions of creating change, and indeed its appellations succeed in queering our sense(s) of distance and movement. Bates’ collection, in a grander sense, elucidates the creation of the poetic voice in the expanding social movements throughout the modern United States. Bate’s high-risk incorporation of many poets attempts to navigate connotations of social and individual unrest: individual narratives quaint and near-to-present often lost in the verbosity of memory or the skill of poetic editing. The collection is raw, arriving by virtue of shifting and timely conversations about how digital and textual culture affects politics and modern relationships.Gathering twelve distinct and, at times, machinating voices, the poetry within holds no particular interest in political rebellion, but rather emotional and momentous engagement with our newfound viral bodies, by utilizing two unique sections to separate the individual poet and the project’s collaborative component. The collaborative themes (“This is Not a Movement,” “Technology,” “A Bedtime Story,” “Written in the Style of…” and “Music”) embody Bates’ bold vision to deracinate the formal obsessions with rhyme and structure, to provide young and aspiring writers the chance to unfold uninhibited visions of the past, present, and future.
