"To Some Women I Have Known is poetic and essayistic, offering edges--of moments--and of genre.   These pieces are lists and litanies, research and recitation, incantations and illusions, and they're all exquisite....  There's a wistful distance to every line, a fade.  The writing in this collection is lyrical and composed, controlled even, and I know I'll come back to it again and again." Jill Talbot"Some Women I Have Known is deliriously immersive, but the real beauty of this work is in the juxtaposition. What yokes the memory of a friend's dying mother, a kidnapped heiress, a syphilis-stricken aunt....  Birds, women, horses, and pears float interdependent in the persistent spume of this gorgeous book." Barrie Jean Borich "What is worthy of recalling (calling out to again), of remembering (putting back together what is fragmentary, dissolute) from our prospect halfway between what is and what could be. Looking back at her old selves, old friends, old family, old lovers, Hansen sees them both 'as we had imagined them to be' and as citizens of a lost world. Whatever these texts are--prose poems, lyric essays, memoir--they are luminous with loss."  Brian  Clement Re'Lynn Hansen's novel, Take Me to the Underground, was nominated for a Lambda Award. She teaches at Columbia College Chicago and lives in Michigan.

Poignant and Evocative By jsteiff The women Re'Lynn Hansen has known are through national headlines and in the most intimate moments of family gatherings -- this collection of stories (like prose poems in their wistful beauty) reminds me a little of Anne Beattie's work in its ability to reveal so much in the smallest of gestures. Grandmothers, childhood friends and exes linger and intertwine with Patty Hearst and Karen Ann Quinlan, creating a mix of associations that captures the elusive and fleeting feeling of memories. This is a beautiful book, a memoir in the best of ways, because we don't just learn about the author but ourselves as well.

What would be the most accurate word for the pieces in this absorbing, can’t-stop-reading-it collection of . . . Essays? The details from TV, movies, news stories spring from our pop culture. Memoir? Hansen’s life as a Midwest girl growing up in the seventies and eighties is the bedrock of these pieces. Prose poems? Her luminous language and her way of juxtaposing the private and personal with our shared history make these poems. What these pieces are is far less important than how they resonate. This is a fine collection of poetic, personal essays is illuminating and deeply rewarding.

I love the way Re'Lynn captured moments in time with the news of the day, like Patty Hearst. A memoir of those times lived through, searching for meaning in every nuance. Beach scenes in winter, fleeting as the bus goes by, bringing back warmer memories of summer. Love the moments captured of spinning on the barstools and catalogue shopping with her mom. The book is full of simple powerful moments. Enjoy!
