"In her collection Like Magic but Real, Maryam Daftari dances between the abstract and the actual with the flirting of Spring and Winter, with sun and shadows practicing tai chi, then dives into deep water with questions about immortality and making choices. Some of her short poems lead to a meditative experience of duration well beyond a simple reading. The poems are thought-provoking, taking us down a path first mystical, then one portraying Nature's magical surprises, and finally unveiling glimpses of the poet's personal life. This book is also to be valued for its accessibility." ~~~ Lucille Morgan Wilson, contest chair and editor of the Iowa Poetry Association's anthology, Lyrical Iowa. ~~~ Maryam Daftari is a poet, China specialist, pianist, and award-winning nature photographer. Although she started writing poetry as an undergraduate, winning several awards, in graduate school she chose Political Science as her area of study, with special emphasis on Chinese Government and Politics. Maryam has published three books and over 25 articles on Chinese affairs and has taught International Relations and Chinese Government and Politics at several universities for over two decades. Maryam has published in Lyrical Iowa, San Diego Poetry Annual; in Stand Forth and A Step Forward, the latter two, publications of the Society of Great River Poets of Iowa, of which she is a member. Her poems have also appeared in an anthology of San Diego poets entitled Sundays at Liberty Station.

Weaving words of magical reality By aarsanjani@mum.edu This book of poetry reflects deep thinking and an eloquent expression that is at the same time approachable and tangible. It kindles the magic inside as we resonate with the deep truths of reality while we continue on our life journey, with the ups and downs, the highs and lows of life. This work of poetry is divided into three sections : Quest, Nature's Play and Windows. Quest describes the things we as humans search for, our experiences when we find them or when we do not and to give us hope. Nature's Play describes in great vivid poetic imagery the beauty that the poet finds in every small or large aspect of Nature around us and inside us. The beauty of the moment is captured with subtle yet evocative words and we are transported into the experience of that aspect of Nature. Windows opens exactly that: windows into the Poet's life experiences that through sharing them we see that we too have felt similar feelings yet the expressions are joyful to read and carry one into a movie of the Poet's life experiences. A journey into the magic behind everyday life.

By Maggi Roark It roams through whimsy, spirit and mind, truth and passion, all within the framework of her personal relationship with the Beloved. There are tiny gems like a bee’s flirtation with each flower and the joy of Spring on a painting spree, as well as a meditative response to words of her cherished poet, Hafez. Her poem "Brooding Moods" spoke clearly to me of our pointless human worrying at death like a tongue’s incessant return to the place where a tooth has been. Maryam has given us poems of joy, sorrow, wonder, and laughter—a sweet collection.
