In this new collection, Michael Kiesow brings imagination and insight to subjects drawn from personal history and cultural experiences ranging from cooking to dance, myth, and music. Childhood traumas and the persecution of those who are ''different'' provide the subtext for poems of sometimes surprising whimsy and freshness. Homey images sit side by side with scenes of angelic splendor, and compassion for troubled souls spurs theological reflections buoyed less by logic than passionate imagery. It's clear that the author has been moved and inspired by the efforts of others--Hockney, Nijinksy, Piazzolla--and his own poems extend that tradition in new directions. As fellow poet Deborah Keenan put is, Moore's poems strive to ''put mystery back in the moon.''

I have just read through all of the poems in his book. The first poem in the collection is one titled "Shaman's Door." It is an apt title and an equally suitable topic to begin with in the collection. "Anyone who is ready will be welcome," Michael writes. My experience of reading through the poetry made me feel welcome, but not always comfortable. However, that isn't the point of prayer. And it certainly isn't the point of life. His courage to enter into his own memories of a friend dying to being bullied to receiving a gift of an umbrella in Greenwich Village lead a reader into his holy spaces. Moore does this so unashamedly and without self-aggradizement, that you are left in wonder at the gift of real poetry. As a twice-published writer of non-fiction prose, I cherish my time I spend with poetry because of its ability to encapsulate power with an economy of words--It makes me a better writer. But it's more than that: good poetry is something to savor like Creme Brulee at a cafe in Paris in April. Have I eaten in Paris in April at a cafe? No. But I imagine that the experience would be like savoring the succulent pungency with which good poetry infuses each word. "What to Pray For" does that. I will treasure my copy.

Boyer Michael Moore's work has all the hallmarks of what the best poems and the best poets do: contemplate, meditate and try to feel their way through the world. Every poem in this collection is deeply felt, deeply experienced, and authentic, whether it be responding to the pains of bullying, exploring the pains of sexuality, or simply responding to life. The poems are wide-ranging, alternately funny and cerebral, and do exactly what prayer does: they focus your mind upon what’s really important, and help you try to understand and forgive. What more could you ask for from any collection of poems?
