New chapbook of 24 poems from New Jersey poet, William Barker, written in 2012-2013, whose title is taken from a gorgeous piece of instrumental music by Blue Sky, Black Death. The title piece, a short poem of only three lines, became both a springboard and the heart of the collection, soon expanding into three separate poems dealing with childhood (a recurring theme across the 58 pages of this collection). Mr. Barker also talks about the loss of friendships, psychopaths, diagnosing one's own health using the internet, National Poetry Month, and Charles Bukowski, while also continuing his explorations into stream of consciousness poetry on a long poem entitled: Soft Landing. Mr. Barker's poems have appeared in Anthologies by: Silver Birch Press and Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Previously published collections of poetry include: Shards (poems 2007-2010) and The Writing Must Leap Upon You Like a Wild Beast (2012). Front cover collage by Brad Hamers. Rear cover design by Vincent Harris.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Well-Written, Soulful Chapbook- A Must Read!!!! By Laura Jasan I found “Sleeping Children Are Still Flying” by William Barker to be a creative and masterfully written collection of poems filled with lavish imagery and symbolic meaning. One of the underlying themes, which surfaced in many of the poems, is about the innocence of childhood: that sense of newness, joy, and excitement that we all feel during our early years as we explore the seemingly magical world around us. But socialization and conformity slowly diminish our individuality and stifle our powers of imagination. The world begins to feel less safe and more daunting the older we become. The author writes about these encroaching external forces on our psyche in such a way that few can compare it as poignantly. With each turn of the page, Mr. Barker takes us farther along on his personal journey of self-discovery: from the nostalgic tone of a childhood remembered, to the pangs of his adolescence and the yearning to fit in with the crowd (“Sober Light Generator”, “Hatched”), dealing with issues of self-confidence (“Ode to the Wallflowers”, “Temporary Forever”), the loss of a long-time friendship (“Book of Leaves”), and the process of becoming a writer (“Kingdom”). These poems captured and defined many of the issues we all go through on our way to becoming adults, thus adding universality to his writing. Many of Mr. Barker’s poems (such as “Pursuing the Cerberus”) also describe his budding love of poetry and for writing. “You’ve Seen the Butcher” was a particularly significant poem, depicting a writer’s feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with his or her written work and the frustration stemming from writer’s block. Yet the author sees this as an inevitable and often necessary part of perfecting one’s craft. For those of us who have dappled in any type of writing, whether it be poetry, essays, term papers, etc., his universal message to keep pushing yourself further and not give up the fight is quite inspiring.Overall, the poems themselves are quite abstract. Some are self-explanatory whereas others require critical analysis and deep contemplation on behalf of the reader to discover their intended meaning. For that reason, I would suggest to anyone interested in reading this chapbook to set a decent chunk of time aside in order to fully appreciate its complexity. For me, the process of reading this chapbook- interpreting, absorbing and deriving meaning from each poem- was an intensely enriching and transformative experience. It reawakened my own sense of wonder and possibility that I felt as a child; it unleashed a floodgate of powerful emotions that varied in strength and range depending on the poem I was focusing on. Needless to say, I absolutely loved this chapbook and look forward to reading more pieces of writing by this new and promising author, Mr. Barker.
