Review Jeanie Greensfelder describes with courage, humor, and unflinching honesty her path -- her pilgrimage -- through a rich and deeply observed life. These poems move...through the perils, perplexities and delights of marriage.. all the way to those first intimations of mortality, when she confronts that "stranger...in the mirror" she has become: "I look after her as best I can / since she masquerades around town / and pretends to be me." Reading this book reminded me, as the best poetry does, just how important it is that we pay attention during our little journey here. -- George Bilgere Wry and wise, these poems strike me as deeply generous; they look carefully... at what is. "What do we really want?" Jeanie Greensfelder asks...throughout Marriage and Other Leaps of Faith. Greensfelder is willing to take on the embarrassingly petty (that fight over cigarettes and macaroons in Paris); ... I like that her humor is not without barbs, her equanimity not without turmoil; it all makes me trust the affirmation that these poems ultimately offer. "In time [we] learned to laugh and celebrate," Greensfelder writes, and I'm a believer. -- Lisa Coffman

We laugh extra as we age By D. stevens Jeanie Greensfelder (Biting The Apple, 2012) writes with assurance, depth and immediacy, every syllable earned, each word finely tuned as a violin string. This collection, poems that span a lifetime, speaks to the reader in a feast of different voices, reflecting how any long relationship can never be just one thing at a time, only a counterpoint of feelings: resolute, funny, nostalgic, fearful, joyful and often astonishing. We laugh extra as we age, look at each other a second too long, see our inner roulette wheels spin, and know the one left standingwill remember this moment. As each voice speaks to us in a whisper or a shout, poem by poem, we begin to hear the concert, the coming together, dissonance and harmony merging: the universal story of any long hard-won bond.Who will you be without me?Who will I be without you?In the second section of Greensfelder's sterling collection, Leaping Thoughts, we catch glimpses of the narrator, solo but not solitary. The earth keeps her company because she has learned to pay attention.Looking at this family tree of missed lives, I seeeach branch died so I could live.Wisdom grows as years pass. We learn from a strong narrator we have come to trust. In mystery mist no one feedson anyone, edges soften, questions vanish, answers fade.Time freezes.Come find me here.

My husband and I are reading this new book of poetry and we laugh/smile with recognition/and nearly cry sometimes. This is heartfelt and bridges childhood, the pain of growing up, finding a mate, and the journey of two shared lives.I've thoroughly enjoyed every page and will look for other works by Greensfelder. I heard one of her poems read by Garrison Keillor on "The Writer's Almanac."

Jeanie's verses have lifted the veil from our secrets and brought us into conversation and compassion with each other. We are invited to look at our common humanity, to see our similarities so we can enjoy ourselves, each other and let the laughter flow. Thank you, Jeanie!
