By Joe's Book Reviews As a parent and teacher, I have read a number of books about parenting, and Seasons and Reasons: A Parent's Guide to Cultivating Great Kids is now at the top of my list. They say that attitude is everything in life. Debra E. Ross certainly has a basketful of encouragement, ready to transform you into a more amazing parent or a grandparent than you are now. After you read this book, cultivating a great kid or kids will be less of a mystery. If you have the mindset of being a tour guide in life for your children (like she does), many pieces of life will fall into place, thus creating happy, healthy, and wise children. The children will grow up to be their own tour guides, and discover the joy of being alive in many ways, thanks to your guidance. You will create your own traditions, holidays, and lasting memories. The accent is on the positive. You and family will do things out of love, not fear. You will create your own good karma together by treating failure as a learning experience, not a tragedy. And did you know your family has a motto? My wife and I have this one: “Give your children roots and wings.” What is yours? Debra E. Ross explores this interesting idea, and many others in this fascinating book. After reading it, you will know three things for sure: Debra E. Ross speaks from her heart, has a basketful of encouragement to share, and excellent parenting advice.

I even let my kids stay up fifteen minutes past their bedtime because I couldn’t tear myself away. The articles are smart, funny, and thought-provoking, but as a writer, I went mad over the writing. It’s so, darn, good. Really. I loved it.Who is this book for? Parents. Better yet, parents-to-be. I’m one of the mothers who got into a bad habit of indulging my kids’ every whim when they were young. Now, I’m paying the price. The word “no” comes with a lot of whining and gnashing of teeth. There’s no one to blame but me. I’d wish I’d read “The Necessary Skill of Time Travel” years ago.Why should you read this book? It will make you think about how your actions and your attitude are shaping your child. It will give you advice on how to help your child grow, learn, and become a good citizen. It’s full of little things, like treating the people you meet with respect and cheerful courtesy whether they're prescribing your kid antibiotics or serving you coffee, because kids learn what they live. It reminds you to enjoy a good picture book, even if you think your kids have outgrown them. The ideas in this book are not hard. You’re probably doing many of them already.Since I’ve known the author personally for years and am familiar with KidsOutAndAbout.com, I had great expectations for this book. They were surpassed. My husband (a colleague of Deb’s husband) keeps joking that he wants to call Deb and tell her we’ve decided to take the plunge and have our girls home schooled. So, would 8:30 to 4:30 work for her? Great! We’ll send ’em right over.

Enright A charming, easy-to-read book full of helpful suggestions on being an active parent. Would you like to get your kids "out and about" more? This book will show you how. It's packed with real-life stories from the author's own child-rearing adventures. If you're worried that your kids are turning into couch potatoes, or if you feel like one yourself sometimes, this book can inspire you to explore new activities with your children.
