'Body Safety Education — A parents' guide to protecting kids from sexual abuse' is a step-by-step guide for parents and carers on how to protect children from sexual abuse through personal Body Safety Education. This guide contains simple, practical and age-appropriate ideas, as well as important information on how abusers groom and signs a child maybe being sexually abused. Body Safety knowledge empowers children. It goes a long way in keeping them safe from sexual abuse, and ensuring they grow up as assertive and confident teenagers and adults. There is no downside! This book is an invaluable guide for parents, caregivers, teachers and healthcare professionals to not only learn the key steps when teaching Body Safety Education (also known as protective behaviours or child sexual abuse prevention education) but to also educate themselves in the signs a child is being sexually abused, what to do if a child bravely discloses, how a predator grooms both the family and the child, valuable organizations and links, etc. In fact, 95% of sexually abused children will know their abuser and only 5% will be strangers. As noted ‘stranger danger’ is not really the issue. Pedophiles and child sex abusers are in our homes and in our families. Part of Body safety Education is teaching children that they must never keep secrets that make them feel bad or uncomfortable (in fact, we teach it's best not to have secrets in families, only happy surprises). The trouble with secrets is that they are the main tool used by child molesters to ensure children remain silent about the abuse. Ensuring the secret is kept is of utmost importance to the perpetrator. Therefore, threats and insisting no-one will believe the child is used as a way of controlling the child to be silent. Through Body Safety Education parents and children will learn the importance of there being no secrets between us. Parents and carers need to be on the lookout for signs of sexual abuse in children and grooming behaviour which is often focused on themselves as well as their children. The answer to the question, 'How do I keep kids safe from sexual abuse?' is simple; teach them Body Safety Education from a very young age. Always use the correct names for their genitals, ensure they know that the parts covered by their swimsuit are known as their private parts, and that private means 'just for you', and consequently not for sharing. This is known as the swimsuit lesson. When you teach your child that 'your body belongs to you' you are empowering them with confidence through knowledge.Body Safety Education also involves teaching your child that no-one can touch their private parts, and if they do, they must tell a trusted adult until believed. Kids need to be safe as well as feel safe. Teaching a child that private means 'just for you' and that their private parts are found under their swimsuit is a valuable lesson that can prevent child molestation. The sexual abuse of children is regrettably very common. Approximately 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. You can help stop child abuse by teaching social and physical boundaries to kids and that some parts are not for sharing. A child needs be able to proclaim loudly and with conviction that, 'My body belongs to me', 'I am the boss of my body' and that 'From my head to my toes, I say what goes'. Please note: the author uses 'safe and unsafe touch' or 'inappropriate touch' as preferred terms for good and bad touch which may be confusing for a child as bad touch (inappropriate touch) can often feel good, i.e. be pleasurable and this can cause confusion for a child.

Body Safety Education: A parents' guide to protecting kids from sexual abuse, by Jayneen Sanders

Review Body Safety Education is a non-fiction resource that will help parents and educators empower our children to know what is unsafe touch and what to do about it. Sadly 85% of children who are sexually abused know the offender and the most vulnerable age for children to be exposed to sexual abuse is 3-8. This book is full of helpful information and facts that everyone needs to know. Child sex offenders are often charming and appear reliable and trustworthy and they groom both the child and the child's family by paying special attention and spending lots of time with them.   --Maggie DentWhat a simple, step-by-step, empowering guide for parents! You may worry that you can't educate your child about sexual abuse without scaring her, or raising inappropriate topics.  But in fact there are age-appropriate ways to introduce the concept of body safety and to develop your child's understanding over time. You don't need to even mention sex or sexual abuse. One terrific book to guide you is Jayneen Sander's new book. If, like so many parents, you feel at a loss for how to get started having these conversations with your child, get your hands on this book.   --Dr Laura, Aha Parenting

From the Author This book was written to educate and empower both parents and children. With 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 8 boys sexually abused before their 18th birthday, it is time to give children the skills they need to protect themselves from unsafe touch, and provide parents with up-to-date information on this epidemic that is child sexual abuse. After writing my children's picture book on safe and unsafe touch 'Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept', I realised there was not only a need to educate children but a need to educate parents and teachers in Body Safety Education (also known as sexual abuse prevention education or protective behaviours). We cannot allow our adult fear of this topic put our children at risk of sexual abuse. As adults, we have a duty of care to protect the kids in our care, and just as we educate them in water and road safety, we also need to protect them from the real possibility that they may be sexually abused by a trusted family member or friend (95% of children know and trust their abuser). I wrote this book so parents and educators have a go-to point of reference -- so they are informed on the signs a child is being sexually abused, what to do if a child bravely discloses, the key steps in teaching Body Safety, valuable organizations and links, etc. Forewarned is forearmed, and how are children ever expected to know, from the first inappropriate touch, that it is wrong; if we, as adults, have not taught them.

There are both illustrations and photos that make absorbing statistics and concepts easier to process and implement. It’s an accessible tool for parents, and can be used in different ways and can be easily adapted for each child’s needs. The (purple edged pages) give the reader the information, skills and ideas to equip their children with all they need to know to be safe, and limit their risk of sexual harm. The templates and pictures in the back of the book (ochre edged pages) are photocopier friendly; I used my small office printer with ease to photocopy and scan the pages for use with my children. My particular favourite is the safety network hand template, because of the accompanying letter and information for the significant people in a child’s life. As a parent I have always had my children speak to their nominated people on their ‘hand of safety’, which has given me an opportunity to ensure that they know what it is required of them should they be the recipient of a disclosure. The template provided in this resource is a great tool, and something that your child’s ‘safe people’ can use as a reference point.I also purchased the teaching notes pack, in which you’ll find a poster, printed copies of the template in the parent’s guide, and some ‘safe and unsafe’ cards. Again, easy to read, use and adapt, and can be done with either one child or a group. All children should be armed with this information and these skills; teaching body safety is as vital as teaching your child road safety or water safety. Remember, it’s far easier to protect a child than it is to repair a broken adult.

It discusses several topics relevant to child safety in a clear and concise manner. It offers reputable advice on how to help your child to be informed on body safety as well as what to do if a child confides in you (Number one rule - BELIEVE THEM!).It includes statistics from Australia however it is still very relevant regardless of what country you are from. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is I felt it need to include mention of 'situational predators' as well. This resource works best in conjunction with the author's children book 'Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept' however it isn't a necessity.I highly recommend it to anyone who knows a young child.

This is a great, easy to read, follow and understand resource to teach and educate children about protective behaviour and body safety. As a psychologist working with children and adolescent victim/survivors of sexual abuse, I could not recommend this highly enough or the importance of empowering children to be educated on body safety. This is one book that every parent should read and use with their children from as young as possible. It’s never too early or too late to start teaching your child/ren protective behaviour or educating yourself about childhood sexual abuse. Well done Jayneen.
