Gerontion, Locklin-Style By Ronald Burras While making my way through Gerald Locklin’s latest book of poetry, I was reminded of the lines in Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure that also serve as the epigraph for Eliot’s “Gerontion”:Thou hast nor youth nor age But as it were an after dinner sleep Dreaming of both. There is a striving for timelessness in many of the poems, in which the perspective is neither youth nor age but rather of an eternal and immutable present, resulting in lines of great beauty:It will be there waiting forus, empty as a symphony, as archesaccolade and arcades guillotine, andwillows weep for everyone but thee. Some subjects (e.g., matrimony) that one might expect to be handled with Locklinian harshness are here treated with a surprising tenderness and, yes, even reverence, such as in “Grand-Madonna and Child”:Still, I never would have guessedThat she could ever have found herselfThis happy, this ecstatic, this fulfilled,This transformed, this redeemed,Again. But this is still Gerald Locklin, with his accustomed brutal treatment of pretentiousness and prudery, along with bad art, music, education, and food. And again we have the occasional episode of uproarious and breathtaking vulgarity, such as when “a loud, healthy / machine-gun burst of flatulence” at the local YMCA is—with Celtic logic—justified as a laudable effort “to discourage overuse of the facilities.” With these and numerous other delights, "Poets and Pleasure Seekers" is a pleasure through and through.
