J.E.Moores has one crazy looking family tree. On its branches he airs his mother's dirty laundry with a sharp wit, setting her bouffant hairdo into a tizzy. Meet Grampy, a rascal who told tall tales about Snotgrass, Swamp Boggers, Philly Lou Birds, Side Hill Gougers and a Yupapotamus on long drives through the backwoods of Maine. Meet Mammy, a redhead beauty who smuggled subversive underground comics to her grandchild from the Adults Only section of the Rockland Greyhound Station newstand. Meet forgetful Kenneth and his pet turkey that followed him everywhere, the neighbor Hamburger Head, and Cecil the Seal Boy from the Union Fair Freak Show. And don't forget the farmhouse ghost, Old Grandma. No family secret is safe in this honest slice of Americana, spanning five generations of Mainers. A hilarious epic that gets the reader laughing out loud and then hits you deep with an awareness of humanity's beautiful flaws. You may find that this family is not too different from yours.

I am so glad he did! This book is a wonderful celebration of a family full of wacky peculiarities. Nothing keeps this family down! Quirky, complex, great storytelling, and "wicked" funny! The characters are moving and stay with you. I liked the book so much, I've read it twice now.

Every time you think things are all going to work out, there is a new twist. It made me laugh out loud and cry; sometimes at the same moment. Although this particular family is in Maine, I think anyone can relate to the characters. An easy read.

By Meghan Pease Such a wonderful read, especially since I am apart of the family of course! Although, the book did not make it as far as my life and my being, my father, my grandmother, my great aunt, and great grandparents are all major characters. "Aunt Faye and Uncle Tim" are my grandparents, whom raised me most of my life, very similar to the bond that J.E. Moores held with his grandparents "Grampy and Grammy" who happen to be my great grandparents. They were remarkable people, and the story of Snotgrass tells the history of them, and their stories of giving up life as they know it and teaching the people they loved lessons. In the book, you will find a tale of old stories my great grandfather use to tell as J.E.M, Little Tim ( my uncle) and Little Roland, and probably Toot. Although, it is sad the next generation of us didn't get as many wonderful memories as they all did, we sure can have this book to live by and to help us remember. The best read I have read in a long time and not being biased because of course this is my family, BUT ANY family can take something from this. This is a tale, about a boy, growing up with his family, and all the stories amongst it. I would recommend it to anyone trying to feel nostalgic and relate to the old maine way of life. Enjoy!
