In the course of their 20+-year engineering careers, authors Brian Fitzpatrick and Ben Collins-Sussman have picked up a treasure trove of wisdom and anecdotes about how successful teams work together. Their conclusion? Even among people who have spent decades learning the technical side of their jobs, most haven’t really focused on the human component. Learning to collaborate is just as important to success. If you invest in the "soft skills" of your job, you can have a much greater impact for the same amount of effort.

The authors share their insights on how to lead a team effectively, navigate an organization, and build a healthy relationship with the users of your software. This is valuable information from two respected software engineers whose popular series of talks—including "Working with Poisonous People"—has attracted hundreds of thousands of followers.

This book will help you improve collaboration.Warning: Version 1 of this book is called, “Team Geek”. I ordered this book because I raved about Team Geek and had bought copies for others. I wanted to see what new things the authors had to say. It wasn’t until I had the book in hand and read the forward that I learned this is the second edition to Team Geek. This information should be in the basic description. The same six chapter titles exist in both books:• The Myth of the Genius Programmer• Building an Awesome Team Culture• Every Boat Needs a Captain• Dealing with Poisonous People• The Art of Organizational Manipulation• Users are People TooThe mission changes slightly from; to help programmers… to help people spend less time fighting and more time creating. In my estimation, about 80% of the material is the same; in some cases it’s been reframed. There are new stories and cute cartoon like pictures. The underlying premise of both books is that humility, trust, and respect is what builds effective and collaborative teams. Version 2.0 attempts to make it more generic and for software engineers. In that, it doesn’t do so well. It is an excellent book for folks who are familiar with terms like: CVS (not the drugstore), port (not the drink), proxy (not the stock voting kind), and Apache (not the helicopter) and who haven’t already read Team Geek. It’s clever, convincing, and easy and fun to read for the right audience.

Applicable to Any Organization or Curriculum in which Teamwork and Collaboration is Essential to Professional Practice By Avid Mystery Reader I really like this book for a variety of reason. First of all, I teach nursing and teamwork and collaboration is now a focus of our curriculum, especially interprofessional teamwork and collaboration for better patient outcomes. I also have a group project in my course for beginning nursing students and while I think group work is essential to professional practice, the groups always have interpersonal conflicts (always!). So, I am on the look out for simple advice on how to help my groups work better and to add to the curriculum. As this book says, it has been used in the past as a textbook. This is actually the second edition of the book with a title change. The first book was entitled "Team Geek" and the focus was really specific looking at teamwork in engineering and software development. The authors say that since that book came out 4 years ago there has been a demand for a more generalized edition looking at teams in professional practice (no matter what that practice is). While this book still has that software focus, much of the information has been generalized to be applicable to almost any group and collaboration situation. I also like that there is a section on servant leadership (which I try to introduce to my students early on as a viable leadership model) and I love the focus on working with the difficult person on a team. The chapters that are particularly applicable to generalization to teams (including professional nursing) include "Building an Awesome Team Culture"; Ever Boat Needs Captain (about leadership in teams); my favorite is "Dealing with Poisonous People." The whole book is about working happily within a group (which I know from my own experience with group work online in my doctoral program that this is a tall order to get to occur) and to increase productivity. This book is simply written but holds words of wisdom and the cute illustrations also add to the readability of the book. I think this book is invaluable and plan on using it within my curriculum to improve my classes on teamwork and collaboration.

By Swift As a manager of a disperse group of highly skilled specialists, I've always struggled with ways to get the most out of them. It's trying to find that sweet spot between under-utilizing them and burning them out while also keeping my own managerial work load sensible. Soft skills, as all good engineers come to understand at some point, are the hardest.A lot of what you see in the "business" section of bookstores is either pedantic nonsense written in a weekend to give somebody on the lecture circuit an "author" cred or somebody peddling a universal "solution" that has to be applied monolithically to be any good. This book is neither of those. Rather, this presents what I rate as fairly deep insights in a light and engaging way while being specific enough on specific topics ("working in a georgraphically challenged team", "require code reviews for every commit") to be more than just pie in the sky stuff. For me this was a quick read (I read it over two plane trips) and a useful one as it helped me re-focus a bit and think about my own managerial style. As someone at the top of the pyramid, such self reflection can only be a good thing. The only thing I would mention is that the book really is written for software development teams and not for general business.. and that's not a bad thing, but really the examples and such are mostly from the software world.
