About the Author
John P. Doran
John P. Doran is a technical game designer who has been creating games for over 10 years. He has worked on an assortment of games in teams comprising of just himself to over 70 students, mod, and professional projects. He previously worked at LucasArts on Star Wars 1313 as a game design intern. He later graduated from DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, WA, with a BSc in game design. He is currently working as a designer in DigiPen's research and development branch in Singapore. He is also the lead instructor of DigiPen-Ubisoft Campus Game Programming Program, instructing graduate level students in an intensive, advanced- level game programming curriculum. In addition to that, he also teaches and assists students on various subjects and gives lectures on C#, C++, Unreal, Unity, game design, and more. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great introduction to UFPS By Jonathan I received this book to give my honest opinion on it. I'm pretty familiar with UFPS and ProBuilder (and Prototype) as I've taught it personally through my own site (Xenosmashgames.com) and I'm also a game development instructor at CGCookie.com teaching with Unity in particular. This book is great for those looking for an introduction to UFPS and even Prototype or Probuilder. I'm an experienced user, but I feel this book would be an easy read for someone just jumping into Unity wanting to build a first person shooter themselves. Lots of screenshots and code snippets to follow, and the code snippets to boot were not some elaborate multi-page scripts either. So those who are new to scripting in C# should be able to follow along just as easily as well.Note that this is using UFPS which is not free, it's a paid asset that's used with Unity. The one star review that was posted about this not being free is a bit silly considering it has nothing to do with the quality of the content in this book. Even with me being a bit experienced with UFPS I still learned a few new things that I'll have to try out myself. My recommendation is to check out this book if you're looking for a fun game to build over the weekend.

Some of these assets will cost you but if your serious about your hobby like me then these are great purchases By james This book will help make a FPS game with minimal coding by using assets from Unity's Asset store. Some of these assets will cost you but if your serious about your hobby like me then these are great purchases. The author will walk you through how to set it up with these tools which is great because you can easily spend hours scouring You Tube trying to find something like this which you may eventually find in different places or you will just give up looking. He makes it easy for you with it all in one place. I'm not an expert on Unity or coding but found this book very easy to follow and had my own little game setup with bots very quickly. But do remember some of these assets like UFPS (this is the only one that is required for you to purchase the other one is Shooter AI but you could use Rain AI which is free) will cost you $95 but it is something worth purchasing, just like any hobby you have to spend some money (like buying this book). I think its a very good starting point for you if your interested in FPS games and wish there were more like this.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Overall A Great Book By Schuyler This book is a great way to learn unity plug-ins easily, in order to create an awesome FPS game. The plugins that are covered here are: UFPS Shooter, Prototype, and Shooter AI. I was able to learn and test new concepts in developing characters, level systems, gun customization, white boxing, terrain building, materials and textures, audio effects/ricochets, rendering effects, and scripting. Each chapter is easy to follow along with images and step-by-step tutorials. The only downside to the book are the additional expenses for plugins, which are required to follow along the process; UFPS costs $95 and ShooterAI is for $50. I give this book a 4-star rating for the value and practical use of the information.
