While some exist quite comfortably among the ordinary, others never quite stop feeling like strangers in this world—drifting along in a never-ending search for a place to call home. With no firm roots and no sense of belonging, every day reveals new mysteries for the souls who feel this way, reminding them of a beauty they only possess.

Penned by Antonio Roy, Strangers to this World is a collection of poems that speaks to anyone who has ever felt like they live on the fringes, while exploring the multifaceted challenges we all face.

With verses addressing love, solitude, and the search for self, Roy’s debut book paints a striking portrait of life and its mysteries, the intricacies of the mind, and society’s influence on how we view ourselves and others.

The result is raw, thought-provoking prose that vividly evokes a wide range of emotions and experiences.

By Claire Chingkoe I first came across Antonio Roy’s work on social media, where bits and pieces of his poetry were posted on his page. What originally drew me in was the similarity in writing that he shared with Lang Leav, though you will notice once you weave your way through the book that Antonio Roy has found his own distinct voice and tone that sets him apart. While Lang Leav takes on a more fairytale-like tone, Antonio Roy’s poetry exudes rawness and simplicity. The symbolism and descriptions were all depicted plainly, yet still artfully crafted to capture the necessary emotion in such a short passage. What took me a while to realize was that I was looking for something that was not found in the book. Recently, I have been into poetry that were more uplifting and encouraging in nature, and because I had not read the synopsis, I dove into this book without much idea on what this was going to be about. Although it took me in a different direction from what I was hoping for, I admired his portrayal of the reality of human emotions and struggles that he was able to communicate. It’s amazing how Antonio Roy was able to cover so many aspects of life’s trials, such as desperation, betrayal, hunger, loss, dependency, sacrifice, loneliness, forgiveness, and much more.My only concern was that there were some passages in which I wished it would have turned out to be more complete. I sometimes felt like I was left hanging, which prevented me from connecting with it on an emotional level. I’m not sure if that was the intention of the author, though I do like it when a certain poem wholly captures the message and makes me reflect on it afterwards. Despite this, I do think that the book does a great job in expressing the different struggles that people go through in their lives, and that it holds the words that someone out there needs to find solace in knowing that they are not alone in their own battles. Some of my favourite pieces include Deserted Island, Lifeboat, A Wilted Flower, Tell Me How It Felt, I Want to Live, and The Beggar. Definitely looking forward to reading more of his work!

For one, he is able to condense the full spectrum of human emotion in terse but meaningful prose. He describes the splendor, the pitfalls, and everything else in between of human emotion. He crafts words that whisks readers off their feet in a playfully mercurial way-- making readers feel that they aren't alone having all these sometimes quirky, sometimes desolating moods as soon as they get their hands (or eyes!) on Roy's writing.Roy also infuses his writing with a length, tone, and rhythm that invokes the serious talent he possesses to be able to say so much in the manner of short but beautifully conceived sentences. I love the comfort it gives and the familiarity it resonates. It has always been a gentle reminder of something that keeps me accompanied, as if it says 'You are not alone'.Truly great read and I look forward to reading more of his work!

By Cheru Fajardo For some reason, and I think this is weird (in a good way though), that I am able to read the book in whatever order I wanted to. And it's really nice. Whatever page you open, you'll feel the connection and the emotion. I love how it's full of different human emotions (that we certainly can connect with). It's so rare to find a book or a piece that can give out emotions with very short sentences. And it takes one great talent to be able to do that.My favorites are lifeboat, a wilted flower and missing parts."What I found wasa realization deep within myself; in our race to achieve our ambitions, we were losinga part of ourselves."Hoping for more of this! :)
