About the Author Jane Summer, a New York City native, worked for two decades as an editor in women's magazines. Her short fiction and poems have appeared in Ploughshares, Oregon East, Porcupine, Spoon River Poetry Review, North Dakota Quarterly, Literal Latte, Portland Review, Left Curve and the anthologies Lost Orchard (SUNY Press) and Devouring the Green (Jaded Ibis), among other publications. A.M. Homes selected her story "Peaceful Village" for selection in the Masters Review 2013 and Ruth Reichl chose her essay submission for a New York Times food writing contest. The editor of Not the Only One: Lesbian and Gay Fiction for Teens, Ms. Summer is also the author of The Silk Road (Alyson), a novel. She received her BA from Kirkland College and MFA from Goddard College.

It is transcendent, evocative, haunting, absorbing and unlike any other book/poem/memoir you've ever read. Enter Jane Summer's world of words and imagery with caution: it will change you and you will want to stay there forever.

A Moment of Silence By Wayne Courtois This book about losing a friend in a plane crash has already been praised to the skies--it's like a new way of writing poetry, or telling time, or scrambling an egg, or whatever. But an equally appropriate response to Erebus might be a moment of silence. Silence is at the heart of this book: the ineffable silence between heartbeats, the silence of charred human remains buried in ice, the silence of grief. More than a "look-at-me, look-at-me" slice of poetry, Erebus has the feel of a sacred space cleared for mourning or meditation, like a chapel. I think I will want to keep this book close to me.

Jane Summer's writing is deeply emotional without being sentimental, angry without being self-pitying. Her mixture of formats enhanced the experience of the book for this poetically-challenged reader. Erebus reminded me of Tim O'Brien's In the Lake of the Woods with its interjections of historical references. The photos are particularly harrowing and effective. This is a work I'll return to.
