Silicon Valley pioneer Ray Zinn, CEO of top microchip company Micrel for 37 years, shows entrepreneurs and executives how to lead and succeed by tackling the Tough Things First

In high school, Ray Zinn’s track coach told him he was too short to run the hurdles. Ray took this as a challenge and, after months of hard training, became the fastest hurdler on the team. That drive and self-discipline is, to Zinn, the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit. It’s what pushed him to achieve the impossible, founding a Silicon Valley microchip company―without venture capital―and turning it into a global empire with an enviable 37-year track record as CEO.

Tough Things First, the distillation of Ray Zinn’s astonishing career as CEO of Micrel, is a comprehensive head-to-toe training program for entrepreneurs and leaders―based on hard-won lessons in business and in life. Zinn’s tough-love approach gives you the guidance you need to:

• Find your vision, set your goals, and make them happen• Build your business like you’d train your body: with heart, soul, mind, and passion• Master the psychological disciplines that will sharpen your focus and drive • Create a corporate culture that engages employees and inspires confidence• Put people first and push them to achieve their personal best• Tackle the tough jobs today―and ensure your success tomorrow

Zinn tells you what it takes to succeed in a world where markets are constantly changing, new technologies are emerging, and small startups are going head to head with industry giants. He shows you how to be a good leader and what you can do to make yourself even better. He reveals why discipline is the first and most important step―for the entrepreneur and the organization―and why people are your single most valuable resource. He offers practical, no-nonsense advice on processes and procedures, finances and growth creation, changing markets and new technology. But that’s not all.

The key to your success, Zinn explains, lies in your mind, your body, your vision, and your heart. This book shows you how to develop these interconnected skills, how to integrate them into your life and work, and how to handle the tough things first.

As the trailblazing founder and CEO of Micrel, Inc., one of the world’s leading microchip companies, Ray Zinn bootstrapped his company, achieved consistent profitability, and delivered a total equity value of more than $800 million at its acquisition. In 37 years of leading this publicly traded microchip empire, he saw it through the dot-com bust and Great Recession―with only one unprofitable year―relying on his discipline as a leader, passion as an inventor, and training as an athlete. In 2015, Zinn stepped down as Micrel’s CEO and is in the process of launching a Silicon Valley accelerator that will help business visionaries build profitable, enduring companies.

Tough Things First: Leadership Lessons from Silicon Valley's Longest Serving CEO, by Ray Zinn

From the Back Cover

"Tough Things First is not a typical business book about a market success or effective business methods. It is about the success of one Silicon Valley startup company, Micrel, which has been run profitably by the same CEO/founder for 36 years. It is about how a founder’s dedication to basic principles is required to make any startup successful. The precise recipe for success may change ― for example, my 32-year-old company, Cypress Semiconductor, used venture funding, while Zinn preached and achieved financial independence ― but Zinn shows how startups must have and truly practice their core values to succeed."-T.J. Rodgers, President & CEO, Cypress Semiconductor Corp

"Ray Zinn has chronicled the discipline, the cultural foundation blocks and the tough decisions required of a successful start-up. Ray explains how, “discipline defines success” under his four principles: Focus, Short Time Frames, Frugality and Being the Best."-Michael Shepherd, President and CEO, Bank of the West

"Ray Zinn’s journey is not only a genuine Silicon Valley success story but also a remarkable life story from which nearly anyone can draw important lessons. In Tough Things First, Ray explores not only the “how-to” aspects of building a company but also the mindset and character traits ― discipline, intense focus and attention to detail ― needed for lasting entrepreneurial success. Most importantly, in an era when success is too often defined by publicity, speedy “exits” and financial windfalls, Ray reminds us that the fulfillment of building a thriving, enduring enterprise is the reward that a true entrepreneur seeks."-Balu Balakrishnan, CEO, Power Integrations

"The disciplined pursuit of what is essential is ten times harder than the undisciplined pursuit of the nonessential but it is a hundred times more valuable. This is brilliantly illustrated in Tough Things First."-Greg McKeown, Author of the New York Times bestseller Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less.

"If you stitch Ray Zinn’s life together and look at what he’s achieved, despite the odds or the skepticism or the impediments that have been presented – doing a start-up business [without venture capital], his sudden vision impairment, the ups and downs of our industry. It’s a very uplifting story about what a determined spirit can achieve in the world, particularly in Silicon Valley and in the United States."-Rick Crowley, CFO, Intersil

"When you have a successful executive like Ray Zinn, who’s done things in his specific way, people will be interested in learning what was it that he did that made him successful and enabled him to create this successful company. Ray’s personal views on things, why he did things differently and how that worked out for him."-Mohan Maheswaran, CEO, Semtech

"At a time when a rush to riches attitude prevails in Silicon Valley, it’s refreshing to get a dose of perspective from the ‘veteran’. Ray Zinn reminds us all that conviction, discipline and perspective are still keys to success ― not lucky timing with an app. Tough Things First is Ray Zinn’s manifesto for entrepreneurs. It is a must read for anyone interested in a successful career."-Richard A. Moran, Ph.D., President of Menlo College and author of Sins and CEOs

"Unlike many management books I’ve read, Tough Things First is entertaining, enlightening, humorous as well as truly practical. Tough Things First is not just for high tech types. Executives and entrepreneurs from every industry, as well as those in business school, will find it relevant and insightful.

I have known many Micrel employees and they were there because of Ray and his approach to leadership. This book shares what made Micrel a special place and how you can live life on your terms, to make your business, your vision and your dreams a reality and success.

After reading this book, you may not be able to do a one-armed push up like Ray can, but you will learn a philosophy, the importance of discipline and practical advice to do the tough things first and become a leader, build a lasting culture and master your industry profession."-Mike Noonen, Chairman, Silicon Catalyst

"Ray Zinn’s Tough Things First is terrific! It tells the truth!

Many business self-help books are by experts who study and talk to the people who actually do it, but have not lived it themselves. It’s not in their blood.

This is very different. I have not seen a better, more practical, more realistic, more helpful, or more engaging invitation to entrepreneurship. The highest compliment I can give is that I am giving this book to both of my sons and inviting them to read and outline it in addition to what they’re doing for their other classes at university.

Tough Things First far exceeded my expectations!"-Reed N. Wilcox, President, Southern Virginia University

"Covering Micrel as a sell-side analyst was a real pleasure for me personally. It wasn’t so much because the company represented one of the hot stocks, it certainly did, but rather it was because the man at the helm was Ray Zinn.

Here’s this very dynamic, very unique individual who, at the time was still running the company that he had founded 20 years prior. Impressively Ray would go on to run Micrel nearly another 20 more years and that’s no small feat when you consider how highly competitive and notoriously cyclical the chip industry is.

Outside of tremendous stamina, I think the first thing that jumps to mind when I think about Ray is his great integrity as a manager and as a person. Honesty, fairness, the way he treats everyone around him and expects to be treated. Ray is also one of the more effective communicators I’ve known. He is very much a straight shooter, very transparent in his dealings with people, and very direct. With reason, there are no hidden agendas. What you see is what you get.

Ray is also extremely generous with his time. I think that comes from a genuine respect he has for people. If you’re going to spend a good part of your day focused on issues important to him or his company, then he’s going to reciprocate by giving his undivided attention to you. If you are lucky enough to spend some time with Ray and you keep your ears open, you will pick up pearls of wisdom along the way.

At his core, I believe Ray Zinn’s a teacher and for me that has definitely been a good thing."-Douglas Lee, CEO, Marinwood Capital Management

"Wow! Ray Zinn’s book Tough Things First is a read that you’ll not want to miss. From beginning to end this book shares tough lessons every entrepreneur needs to know.

Along with his incredible personal drive which helped propel him to success, Mr. Zinn points out the tough lessons he learned early and how you can use those same lessons.

Executives and entrepreneurs will find this book compelling. Ray Zinn is not the kind of man that you want to tell something can’t be done. He shows it can and how he did it. He learned the tough things first and now his book is sharing those tough things with us. What a philosophy!"-Dr. Richard G. Whitehead, University Ambassador, Southern Virginia University

"Ray believes that an enduring company should have a simple, but strong culture. The four pillars that Ray fostered in Micrel are honesty, integrity, dignity of every individual and doing whatever it takes. This corporate culture is the guiding principal that we’ve followed for Micrel’s daily work.

Culture is passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next. However, company consists of people from different backgrounds. Communicating culture could be a challenge.

Ray took every possible opportunity to give talks or ask the staff to speak of their culture every Friday. He believed that good employees make good companies because they remind his staff that he won’t make us rich but make us a better person."-Wiren Perera, Vice President, LAN Solutions & Corporate Strategic Marketing, Micrel

"The one thing that always struck me about Ray Zinn was his sincere belief that a company’s most significant valuable asset was its people and his unrelenting focus in trying to make each and every one of us a better person.

Whether it was to make you more patient, more tolerant, more temperate, et cetera. If you consider the fact that Micrel was in fact started with a fairly limited amount of financing, this is probably one of the keys to the value that he built at Micrel. Essentially, Ray increased the value of the company through increasing the value of its employees."-Jung-Chen Lin, VP LAN Solutions, Micrel

Plenty of tortured analogies, very few first person accounts By Allen S How Ray Zinn was able to bootstrap a semiconductor business with no VC money must be a fascinating story, unfortunately this book does not tell it. Instead he gives chapter after chapter of over-extended analogies and a scant handful of stories from 37 years running Micrel. "A business is like a body, I was the heart and my co-founder was the liver," what does a liver do again? "A new business is like a gymnast learning to walk up stairs on their hands - something I can still do." "Running a business is like flying a plane, you must use the rudder and ailerons to turn a plane," what are a business's ailerons? I am sure these analogies have some value, but without a real-world example of how he discovered and applied them they are not useful. The story of how he got a bank loan in the 1970's to start his company gives a helpful example of the aphorism "never take no for an answer." If he included examples with the dozens of trite sayings, sometimes listed one after the other, this would be a valuable book.Mr Zinn makes his feelings clear about VC's and entrepreneurs who start businesses for a fast sale but does not honestly weigh the pros and cons. It is obvious he thinks his is the one true way to run a business. Again, some examples taken from his experience would make the book more than an extended rant. One point of factual error left me questioning the too few examples he did include. JFK Jr was flying VFR when he crashed because he did not hold an instrument rating, a fact that could have been checked with a quick search. Reading an incorrect account of an incident Mr. Zinn had no connection with was one of the many times the book left me frustrated and wanting more.

A Silicon Valley Success Story with Lessons for your Career and Life in General By Richard I highly recommend Ray Zinn's book to managers and leaders in all fields. The story of Mr. Zinn's journey to success on many fronts is full of lessons in both business and for life. The constant pursuit of excellence in all things while overcoming seemingly overwhelming obstacles is testament to fortitude, optimism, and discipline ("doing what you don't like and doing it well"; "do the tough things first"). These are attributes that we can all focus on to improve our careers, and our lives in general. The semiconductor industry is a Darwinian, cyclical industry where only the most nimble and well run companies can survive. The fact that Mr. Zinn was able to build Micrel without venture capital and sustain a very long and successful track record in the semiconductor business demonstrates that the characteristics and business practices he emphasized are of significant value. A testament that what many may call "traditional values" can be the foundation for building a great business model.

It is refreshing to hear a point of view which is different from all the sound bites we get today and know that it has actually worked well! In todays mad rush for "Growth" at the exclusion of everything it is almost quaint to read about People, culture and oraganization mattering more to the CEO. That it worked and in the long term made a very positive impact on the employees makes you sit up and question the current wisdom in Silicon Valley. A must read book for anybody aspiring to be a leader. There is almost a spiritual, Zen quality in the management style that Ray espouses in this book. The best part is that you can take it home and use the same principles to build a happy family life too!

By SHAN The book is made up of Themes, broken down into related events and all entries shared are from her life, and most have a lesson to be learned and all have a scripture relating to said event or situation. Many fun topics are covered, that we can enjoy, even as single women such as THE SPICE GIRL-Lessons from Housecleaning."You see, God created me, and He thinks I'm great. He doesn't always like everything I do, but His love for me will never change...I am so valuable to Him, that He gave His life for me and promised never to leave or forsake me. He is always right there, and He's given me everything I need." pg. 8His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him... 2 Peter 1:3 NIVAnother fun one: TROUBLE WITH MARSHMALLOWS"God's big on waiting, which I'm not always good at. But when I wait on God instead of giving in to that bag of fluff right in front of me, I always find a feast filled with blessings that are delicious, satisfying and sweeter than anything I could imagine." pg. 26Taste and see that the Lord is good; Psalm 34:8 NIVDEADLY WEAPON"Our words have the power to give life or to destroy lives....could never dream of handling a gun without using the proper safety precautions, many of us arm our words carelessly leaving a bleeding, broken path of victims in our wake." pg. 52Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire...James 3:5, 6 NIVThere are chapters on the house, food, pets, being vain, parenting, marriage, the great outdoors, this and that, and of just being me. What a fun book that will have you laughing, crying and thinking how smart you were to pick it up. Beyond Good, It's DECADENT By Amazon Customer Have you ever read a book that was so good you just kept putting off the ending because you couldn’t bear with the separation of completing it? Like the last piece of chocolate cake that is so decadent you’d hide yourself in the closet to eat it alone, The Breaking Point is the kind of book you want to go on forever. With hilarious antidotes, Ms. Brumbaugh tells about normal life as a mother, wife and writer. From catching giant spiders with mixing bowls to hair styles, flooding bathrooms to singing solos in the church pageant, her stories will have you rolling on the floor laughing. It is with such humor that she drives home God’s amazing love, His patience and ways. The book could easily be used as a devotional with each day being a scripture and short article.I must share some of my favorite quotes with you:“Actually, I woke up two weeks ago and knew it was time, but since procrastination is one of my spiritual gifts, I put it off until today, when I couldn’t find any more excuses.” (Loc 772)“So many things about my life leave me feeling dizzy and out of control. I feel like I’m out of my league, like I’ll land splat on my face before it’s all said and done. Why do I forget that I don’t have to do it on my own? Why do I forget that God’s given me a lifeline? When life is more than I can handle, I’m exactly where He wants me to be. I have a stronghold. I can cling to the cross.” (Loc 943)Do yourself a favor, read The Breaking Point today then share it with a friend or two. You won’t be sorry and you’ll have a badly needed laugh. I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion which I’ve provided here.

Renae(she is so down to earth you feel like you know her personally)Brumbaugh, in The Breaking Point, seizes her arrows of humor and aims them at the reader's funny bone over such topics as "Deadly Weapon," "Heavenly Asparagus,""Going Coconuts,"Shamgar, as well as fear of heights, why one should be a peanut farmer,or why God plays the "God card..."Each short, witty story is followed by a spiritual lesson, always seamlessly tied to the topic at hand. One of the lessons Renae shares:"I've gone looking in the wrong places for my peace,my happiness, my self-esteem...But the whole time,I had the keys to those things right in front of my nose. And His name is God." Another nugget, after describing a closet-cleaning venture:"My mind should be a palace,a place where beautiful thoughts and valuable memories are stored. It should not be a junkyard, filled with angry memories and unforgiveness."So many passages I want to quote... but then, you wouldn't need to read the book! This is the best humorous book I've read that is also a devotional. It is just the right mixture of everyday anecdotes, humor, and clear spiritual application that will make you think hard. I'm pretty much kicking myself for possibly missing a chance to hear Renae speak a few years ago. I would give a lot to hear her now,as she talks about topics like a "gigantic, sparkly, beautifully wrapped bag of fertilizer!"I gratefully received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Our American culture has taught us to not ask or look for help from friends, family or neighbors. This books bridges that idea and helps the caregiver and the person needing care to gentle with themselves and their experience. It's just fun and worthwhile. Love shines through and the author even has a CD with her harp music available. Beautiful!

I could tell immediately that she wrote it from the heart. This book is sure to be well-received by people everywhere who have needs that are not met, people who don't know where to turn for advice. I predict that readers will be eager to fill in the blanks and jot down notes on the forms and pages provided within this book. After all, each of us is likely to need help sooner or later, and what better time to prepare than before an emergency develops?

By Rae Phillips This was an informative read, briefly summarizing the causes of childhood obesity and what we as parents can do to prevent it. The book opens up outlining the potential health risks associated with childhood obesity and then goes on to discuss the causes. As a mother of two children obesity is something which is really important to me, my daughter follows an excellent diet, lots of protein and vegetables, she does not really like sweet things, but my son prefers carbs, so keeping a close eye on his weight is something I do all the time. The book outlined much of what I already knew as well as underlining something I firmly believe in, which is routine from an early age, a child who has a good sleep pattern is less likely statistically to have an issue with obesity. This book is an excellent educational summary and should be essential reading for all parents; education is the key to preventing obesity. There is so much work being done already in schools to encourage our children to eat healthily, but we need to continue with this at home. This book was a stark reminder of the changes that I need to make as a parent to ensure that my children remain in good health and continue to lead active and happy lives.

A groundbreaking health guide for women of all ages that shows women's inherent moodiness is a strength, not a weakness, and medication is not always the answer

Women are leaders, breadwinners, and caregivers. We're leaning in so much we're about to fall over. To take the edge off, many women pop a pill, eat something sugary, have a drink, or spend mindless time online. These activities quickly become patterns that take an enormous toll on women's bodies and natural hormonal balance.

Women are made to be moody and, according to Dr. Holland, that's a strength - not a weakness. Our culture tells us otherwise, but when used properly, moodiness is power.

By design, our hormones ebb and flow over a 28-day cycle and wax and wane over decades of fertility. Women are naturally emotional and empathetic because of these fluctuations and our evolutionary role as caretakers. Our moods govern our reproductive cycle, but they are also a smart feedback system. They let us know when our bodies are primed to tackle different challenges and when we should be alert to developing problems.

But millions of American women are medicating away their hormones because the culture says that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four American women takes a psychiatric drug, be it an antidepressant, antipsychotic, or antianxiety medication. If you add sleeping pills to the mix, the statistics become considerably higher. In major metropolitan areas, the number of medicated women doubles.

Medicating away our natural moods can have devastating consequences for women in many areas of their lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Unnecessary prescription drug use introduces a host of problems into these basic activities.

Dr. Julie Holland knows there is a better way. She's been sharing her frank and funny wisdom with her patients for years, and in Moody Bitches Dr. Holland offers readers insider information about the pros and cons of the drugs they're being offered, as well as some surprising and highly effective, individual, natural therapies that can help them press the reset button in their own bodies and minds.

In the tradition of Our Bodies, Our Selves, this groundbreaking guide for all ages will forge a much needed new path in women's health - and offer women invaluable information on how to be better, more balanced bitches at every stage of life.

51 of 56 people found the following review helpful. very quirky By A reader I had mixed feelings about this book. The first half of the book discusses love and desire and hormones; in short, romantic longing and our search for fulfillment, told from the body's point of view, with lots of information about hormones and interactions between them, as well as effects of medications like SSRI's, contraceptives, etc. on all of that. She asserts that to a large degree, our behavior in searching for a mate is driven by hormones and other bodily functions that we are not very aware of. She supplies pages of endnotes to back up her reasoning. The second half offers a tremendous, possibly overwhelming amount of health advice, some of which is useful and/or familiar (being in nature can teach us stillness and peace; kids with ADHD need to get outside and move; gluten and dairy and sugar are bad for us, but eating a little bit mindfully is good; exercise is as effective as antidepressants in some situations; we need real human contact, as opposed to the relationships we maintain through technology; sleep is crucial for many reasons, and melatonin helps; etc.) and some a bit startling and expressed in words that could be offputting to some: "exercise grows your brain..." (all good!) "and obesity can cause the kind of inflammation that interferes with learning, making you stupid." She lists fibromyalgia among psychiatric diagnoses, repeatedly tells us to indulge in cannabis for its anti-inflammatory effects, and tells stories of the improved cognitive functioning on a cardio regimen vs. rats after liposuction (rats on liposuction?) referring to rats with the liposuctioned fat reinjected as "fatheads." I learned about "Cooper's droopers," the estrogenlike aspects of BHA in plastics and lots more. Much of this information was intriguing; some was a bit perplexing. The parts of the book I most valued were: first, her words about vital aging: "It's hard to grow old gracefully, but women, we have to...No plastic or synthetic anything in my body. I will have earned each wrinkle and gray hair, and I want to display them like trophies of a life well lived." The long chapter about medications at the end is fascinating and useful, and I especially appreciate her closing chapters, "You. Need. Downtime." (she is so right that being overscheduled and chronically rushed is like a status symbol in our society) and "Staying Sane in an Insane World."So despite the unfortunate choice of a title and amid some unexpected ideas, there is lots of good material in this book.

A potpourri of information and guidance for perimenopausal and menopausal women By Tracy Marks MOODY BITCHES is an eclectic potpourri of sound medical advice, holistic guidance, common sense and psychiatrist Dr. Julie Holland's personal recommendations in regard to women's health. Comprehensive, explanatory and practical, but not always in-depth, it is a valuable overview of most of the common physical and psychological issues women face approaching and experiencing menopause - with many suggestions for coping. The first two sections of MOODY BITCHES discuss moods, love, marriage, sex, motherhood and perimenopause. The substantial third section, "The Moody Bitches' Survival Guide" provides medical information and guidance pertaining to inflammation, food, sleep, sex, embodiment, downtime, and "Staying Sane in an Insane World." For me, the most valuable facet of the book was the 42 page appendix - a guide to selected drugs. Here, Dr. Holland provides an informative discussion of specific antidepressants, stimulants, anti-anxiety drugs, mood stabilizers, prosexual medications, appetite suppressants, and both prescription and nonprescription sleep aids.Although I am in my 60s and entered menopause early due to a hysterectomy, I found much of the information and guidance in this highly readable book to be helpful and many of the facts presented to be quite interesting. A lot of it I knew already, but the new pointers I gained were particularly valuable.Did you know, for example that when under the influence of ambien, you do not create new memories, and may be inclined to wake after only about 3 hours sleep? That both human and bonobo females have pelvises tilted forward to facilitate face-to-face sex? That the SSRI zoloft is known for significantly lowering libido? That in 1910, the average adult got 10 hours sleep a night, compared to less than 7 hours today? That sleep deprivation as well as late night eating (due in part to a slow-down of the liver) contribute to weight gain? That BFAs, found in plastics including plastic wraps frequently used for packaging foods, have been found to increase the risk of both cancer and asthma? As I read MOODY BITCHES, I took half a dozen pages of notes in regard to pointers that I found useful - most having to do with guidance in regard to food and supplements. Here are some of them:1) Eat bananas and lentils as well as dark chocolate to boost serotonin.2) Black cohosh, pine bark extract and MACA can help counter night sweats.3) The "leaky gut syndrome" (which appears to be the colloquial term for a thinning of the intestinal walls) contributes to inflammation but can be helped with probiotics as well as such foods as asparagus, onions and artichokes.4) Cinnamon can help stabilize blood sugar.MOODY BITCHES is not without its flaws. Some of the information and advice Dr. Hollands presents appears to be somewhat contradictory - estrogen can guard against dementia but increase the risk of cancer, follow her "no foods forbidden" policy" but avoid certain foods that aren't good for you, eat whole grains although you may need to avoid gluten, feel your feelings rather than medicate them, but consider these medications..... In some cases, I wish that Dr. Holland had backed up her suggestions with research data - although she does already include have 40pp. of footnotes at the end of the book.I was a bit uncomfortable with her frequent recommendations of cannabis (marijuana). Finally, I object to the title MOODY BITCHES, which lends an aura of superficiality and glibness to a book which does have a great deal of solid medical information. You don't have to accept every statement and suggestion that Dr. Holland makes, however to find value in MOODY BITCHES. Yes, most of the information she provides is available on the Net, but the Web is not as compact and organized as this 400 page book divided into chapters by subject matter. MOODY BITCHES is a good starting point for understanding and helping many of the problems women encounter in perimenopause and menopause - and readers can always use it as a springboard to help determine what further research would benefit them. I rate it a high 4.

Salinger, Holistic Nurse Practitioner I'm always thrilled to find a book written by a physician holding a holistic perspective, and this one truly fits the bill. The opening introduction immediately informs women that their traits they've considered faults (and that they've been told are faults by others) are actually a source of their power. Moodiness that is dynamic and cyclical is natural to us and part of what gives us a stronger perception of our environment, the ability to pick up on nuances and deeper meaning and also the flexibility and adaptability necessary to survival. As she states, being static is not conducive to surviving in a changing situation, being dynamic, sensitive, fluid and flexible is what allows responsiveness to the cues around us that guides our inner wisdom. Women for centuries have been told they need to conform to a more static, masculine ideal of how to be, essentially pathologizing this natural, innate sensitivity and feminine wisdom that we all hold. Hysteria is one of the pathologizing labels assigned to our natural moodiness in the not so distant past. While not always blatantly labeled now days, unfortunately the idea still exists and women feel bad about this natural part of themselves seeing it as a weakness or fault. Reading this book is a great support for moving away from such beliefs and towards a more holistic, affirming self concept for women. The author describes her book as integrating timeless wisdom with today's science. Discussing the normal hormonal fluctuations of women that occur monthly as well as over a lifetime. It also discusses what can interfere with our normal hormonal fluctuations and what women can do to prevent, decrease or resolve these interferences. It further affirms for women that moodiness is normal, a sign of health, not a sign of mental or emotional disorder or disease. The author is a psychiatrist and combines her education with her client clinical interactions and experience. As a holistic nurse practitioner who practices integrative psychiatry I have seen this pathologizing of women's moods myself and I am thrilled to have another great text to support my practice as well as to better assure my clients and friends who have been taught their moods are a problem or wrong to have.Part one of the book, "Moody by Nature" describes what is actually normal for women and a few tips on vitamin and mineral deficiencies that might make moodiness more intense. It also discusses the impact of artificial hormones, such as birth control pills, and how they can negatively impact a woman's moods.Part two, "Mating, MILFS, Monogamy and Menopause" discusses hormones and other body chemicals and cycles that relate to feelings of love, lust, attraction, etc. There is a chapter on marriage and making it work, again in relation to the impact of our natural biochemistry. A chapter on motherhood and the biochemical changes experienced during this life cycle. There are also chapters on perimenopause and menopause and how those life changes impact our overall feelings as well as our hormones/biochemistry.Part three "The Moody Bitches Survival Guide" discusses the role of inflammation in stress and depression, building resiliency, the importance of real food and the impact of sugar, fat and protien on our hormones, neurotransmitters as well as moods. The role of our guts in relation to immunity, mood, inflammation, etc. (which is great as more and more evidence points to the importance of a healthy microbiome within). The importance of sleep on our bodies, mind, moods and even how it impacts weight. The importance of good sex and orgasms as well as the impact of various pharmaceuticals on your sex life. Body love - how what we do to meet societies current ideals of a great body impacts us, often for worse. The importance of down time and bringing calm into your life - we tend to over schedule and over-do. And the impact of environmental influences on our bodies and minds - everything from pesticides to too much screen time. The Conclusion, "Staying Sane in an Insane World" wraps up the issues discussed, and also has a guide to select medications and how they can impact a womans biochemistry and moods (mostly psych meds but appetite suppresants are included as well). There is also a glossary of terms, and a list of all cited studies and references (although this may be changed to footnotes in the final print version, my copy of the book is a pre-publication version). In my opinion this is a great book for a woman new to these concepts as well as those who are familiar with many of them but want a well referenced book on the subject. For me, this is a great, easy to read book that I will recommend to my clients as well as my friends.

The King's daughter sees everyone going about in the kingdom; farming, tending to the horses, crafting armor, cooking food--but does not know what purpose she is to fulfill. Everyone appears stronger, smarter, more talented than herself and fears her value among her people. Seeing this, the wise King takes the young girl and shows her the many paths of her potential. The King's Daughter is a story of self worth; showing that no matter who we are and what we are capable of, there is always more to our personal value than we realize. Through the example set by the King to his daughter, we are shown love, empathy and not allowing the things we can do be limited by the things we can't.

Joseph Roush was nearly six years of age when he found that he would be housed in The Montana State Children's home along with four hundred other youngsters. What could he do? What would you do in this situation? He dedicated himself to the task of locating his mother and putting his family back together. He would somehow record everything that would happen to him to share with his mother when they were reunited once again. He knew this could be a long and difficult journey, but he had no idea just how long and difficult it would be. Joseph's journal should provide some insight into the influence good folks can have over those who face unfortunate events in their lives. Perhaps his experiences both good and bad might give hope to those without hope and direction to the lost.

By Papillon Our little one seemed to like looking at the images on the Ipad when we showed it to him. It's hard to say at that age obviously, but it caught his attention for quite a while so I say now he did see! :) The pictures are simple yet detailed enough and very, very cute!

Diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiance disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder in the early 1990s, Robert Stevens was anexceptionally intelligent child who could not function in a mainstream environment.Being the “problem child” of every play group, sports league, and extracurricular activityhe joined, Robert had no friends, no internal means of self-control, no “off switch,”and―as his parents, Robert and Catherine Stevens, were warned―perhaps no realfuture. Thinking it for the best, Robert’s parents did what the experts told them to do.Despite having a remarkably high IQ, Robert was placed in a special education program, under a psychiatrist’s care, and on several powerful medications, including Ritalin andProzac. Unfortunately, nothing worked quite as intended, and Robert suffered from nearlyevery side effect these drugs had to offer.Robert’s parents saw they were losing him. Witnesses to Robert’s drastic mood swingsand anxious displays, they did not know whether they were seeing their son or theresults of the medications he was taking. While initially helpful, the special educationclass began to create its own world of problems, with Robert taking a step backwards foreach step forward. Desperate, the Stevens family turned to holistic therapies. Amazingly,Robert began to show improvement. Wondering why their son’s doctors had discouragedsuch strategies, Robert and Catherine started researching new approaches on their own.Using nontraditional approaches, Robert was found. By third grade, he was off allmedications, attending a mainstream school, making friends, and simply being himself.Finding Robert chronicles one family’s journey through the world of developmentaldisorders. It depicts the struggles faced, examines the decisions made, and offers athorough analysis of the therapies utilized. Amid sadness and confusion, with strengthand resolve, Robert and Catherine regained their son and undertook a mission to changethe way we look at these conditions.

A tremendously engaging book about raising children and about life By Gene Killian Full disclosure: Rob and Tina have been dear friends of our family for many years, and once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, Rob and I worked as lawyers together (and had a lot of laughs doing it). But in terms of reviewing this book, that doesn't matter. I would've loved this book no matter who'd written it. It's an engaging, infuriating, and at times funny look at raising a family when you're trying to help your kid conquer some demons. The advice and observations are priceless for anyone who's a parent or considering becoming a parent, but really, I think everyone will benefit from this book. It shows some of the failings of our medical system and our educational system, but it also teaches us an invaluable lesson: Most problems do have a solution...it just takes patience and relentlessness to get there. There are many great quotes in the book, but one of my favorites is: "Strange that while I toiled under the illusion that I was molding my children’s lives, they were, in fact, molding mine." I highly recommend this book. Buy it, read it. You won't be disappointed.

As a parent with a child with similar issues to Robert, its a relief to see that there is a way other than medication that will help my daughter grow to be a well functioning individual. I have already started on a path of my own to seek the type of treatment and nutrition which will assist in reaching those goals for my daughter. I highly recommend this book for any parent whose facing raising a child with behavioral issues/special needs.

This book is divided into six scenes and senses. One of the scenes is an interactive one where the reader is able to express his or her own feelings on six white pages (T.N.T Brain). In this way, it is no longer only the writer’s work, but it is the booklover’s piece of art too. This is a new technique to encourage every bookworm who wants to read, to be a bibliophile. This writing is unique in that it combines poetry with story-telling. The fight between the woman and the writer is over imagination. The writer uses all his words to battle with men’s thoughts, and to show his suspicions and worries. You will discover while your eyes are captured with his confrontations that he is aiming for you, the reader, to discover something deep inside yourself. Gerard W. Khatib
