About the Author Marianne Smith Johnson holds a BA from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and a law degree from Hastings College of the Law. She is married with two children, and a practicing attorney in San Diego, CA. Her family enjoys the desert outdoors, camping and exploring the varied wilderness of California. In addition to the journals Calyx, Sport Literate, The Kerf, Slant, and New Millennium Writings, her poetry also appears in the anthologies Lavanderia: A Mixed Load of Women, Wash and Word; A Year in Ink, by San Diego Writers, Ink; and Mamas and Papas: On the Sublime and Heartbreaking Art of Parenting. She recently appeared in The Far East Project anthology, a collection of prose and poetry showcasing life and art in San Diego’s east county. The ten-page manuscript of this chapbook, Tender Collisions, was a finalist in the annual San Diego Book Awards, in June 2013.

The author is a mother, an attorney, a woman, a friend... and so am I. She draws upon experiences from many aspects of her life to communicate her thoughts and feelings. There are a few things she is that I am not... a desert-lover, the mother of a son... but I still enjoyed the poems about those things. So don't worry if you don't have as much in common with her as I do. I had the pleasure of attending her book launch at Grossmont College, so I can easily hear her voice reading these poems, although I'm sure I could imagine her voice just from her words an probably still come pretty close. I look forward to reading more of her work! Buy this book... share "For Namesake" with your college roommate, share "Hit & Run" with your spouse (but only if your kids are out of the room), share "Woman of Witness" with that strong female role model in your life, share "Law School Reunion, 2008" with your secret poet friends, share them all. This is poetry meant to be shared.
