Henson:thebookdoc@gmail.com Surviving the Justice Experience: an Essential Christian Resource for Families of Offenders offers hope to those with loved ones, friends and even acquaintances who find themselves inside America's criminal justice system. Along with that hope, author Kevin J. McCarthy, PhD, has put together an excellent resource for coping with incarceration within that system. Surviving the Justice Experience (Ambassador International; May 2013; $16.99, paperback) is a guidebook leading gently to spiritual healing.McCarthy comes from a dysfunctional family and knows all too well that growing up without the necessary skills to rise above this dysfunction; anyone can get caught up in a life of drug abuse, alcoholism and sexual addition. Unfortunately, he also discovered that this lack of examples of proper behavior skills could lead to the secreted "prison industrial complex." How many of us have either experienced firsthand the unacceptable difficulties of prison life, or know of a relative or friend who has been caught in this impossible tragedy? According to McCarthy's research, "10 million people are currently under the control of various justice agencies, 30 million former felons are living across the US and there are 90 million family members and friends of incarcerated or released felons." He goes on to discuss how society continues to punish even after the time is served. "Although the sentence has been served," McCarthy states solemnly, "for the crimes committed, the story of what happens to convicts once they leave jail does not receive much attention." He goes on to address the needs of children, spouses, and family members of offenders as well as the inmates themselves. He realizes that there is very little support available to all these castoffs from society. McCarthy's determination to provide life saving, life-renewing support to those caught in this American tragedy deserves attention and praise. Exploring the Christian hope of spiritual healing, McCarthy has produced a thoughtful, insightful look at a situation purposely hidden by "the justice system", shining a light in a dark place. Well done, Dr. McCarthy. Well done.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Kevin J. McCarthy is a retired clinical psychologist with 25 years of experience working with wounded families. By Jason We are confronted with numerous challenges in life, and unfortunately many of those challenges bring us to a threshold of hardship. The events that cause these difficult times of suffering are not always those of which we are willing to share with others. In fact, we often conceal them to the open eyes and ears of those among us, and the result is an amassment of emotionally unhealthy thoughts and feelings. There are many among us who are in this predicament, and they are family members struggling with the hardships that come with having a family member in prison.Having read this work, which I find to be very remarkable, I find it to be a very valuable and essential tool for helping family members who are suffering from the pain that comes from having a loved one in prison. I also find it to be a very crucial choice for helping mend those wounds that are molded during the process of incarceration. Furthermore, I believe anyone who would like to know more about the system, the means to surviving the process of this experience, or simply how to deal with the pain, suffering, and hardship during these times, should consider this work as a valid resource. This particular hardship is one that we often believe cannot be assisted in any way. However, with the information provided in this book, I believe help can definitely be discovered. From emotional support to the support of helping reconnect with family members during this experience, this book provides key elements of assistance in these areas. In addition, many facts are never discovered or considered until actually living the experience. But with the information that is well presented in this book, these challenges are no longer complete surprises.Whenever we seek help, it is only necessary that the information we seek is from one who has experience in the field of which we are seeking the assistance. In this case, I find this work to be of a person who has much experience and knowledge of the justice system, the pain and sorrow that is involved during the life of incarceration, the stress and suffering that is experienced by each and every family member related to the offender, and ways of coping with these accumulative challenges that seem to build upon one another as time continues. I finally believe that since this author has lived the life of this experience firsthand, he has valuable knowledge and information for anyone who is at any point along the path of the justice experience.I highly suggest this material for anyone who is facing the justice system and suffering from a family member in prison. You may not feel comfortable seeking advice from those around you, but the silent voice of these words will definitely provide you with a fulfillment that you truly deserve.By the way, after I read the book, I checked out the author's website. It is great and has up to date information that can be helpful for those who are in need of silent assistance while struggling with this type of situation: [...]Jason Hufft

By Brenda Fosdick Meeting the author, Kevin McCarthy, at the Prison Family Conference in Texas, this past February and then reading his book was the best thing that happened to me just four months after my husband was unexpectantly arrested and eventually sent to prison. I was an emotional, mental, spirtual and physical wreck and had no clue where to turn. Yes, God was there for me, but I needed to know I wasn't in this journey alone and what to expect. Kevins book, Surviving The Justice System, and The Prison Family Conference held annually in Texas were the rock I needed to help me through my trauma. I HIGHLY suggest this book (and the conference) to anyone with a family member in jail, Department of Corrections or has the possibility of being incarcerated...They were both literally pertinant in my survival!!! I also sent a copy of the book to my husband now in the DOC and he spoke very highly of it. PLEASE read this book if you have an incarerated loved one!!!!
