By Joan d'Audiffret I was looking forward to this book, unfortunately this turned out to be disappointing. Anyone with a couple of semester from IAnimate or animation mentor under their belt will benefit little. This is a very superficial overview of a complex subject. The interviews added between the chapters are a nice filler. Keith Osborn described his workflow from step to spline, but too little for the non initiated and not enough for the somewhat experience animator. Of note the link to the companion files of the kindle edition is non functional. Furthermore, this text is 10$ cheaper if you order it directly from the publisher in a epub format. Oh well, there is no substitute for practice...

I've been animating for several years and have completed the feature course at iAnimate just last year so I guess I'm not a beginner or an expert, somewhere in between.Regarding the content here's my take on it :Since I've been studying animation intensively for a few years there's not a lot in the book I haven't already heard of (I've read ASK, Illusion of Life, Timing for Animation and lots of others), so parts like the discussion of the basic principles is stuff I'm already very familiar with. At the same time though - I really don't believe the basics can ever be repeated too often as this stuff is crucial to think about as much as possible! So I find having it repeated in different contexts by different books is a good thing.The other side of it is that in most animation courses/books they talk about animation as a whole, and they don't dig deep into one style so much as cover many styles. But this book deals very specifically with very pushed cartoony animation in particular and for me that's very interesting and there's some great information in there that you can only learn with a lot of trial and error in many casesIt also covers a lot of stuff that's anecdotal, like the interviews, which I found was generally illuminating. I'm a freelancer and I work remotely so I'm always aware that one thing I miss by not being part of a studio is the chance to look over someone's shoulder while they work and to ask them questions about their thought process, workflow etc. I got some of that at iAnimate but I'm always hungry for more as every animator has their own tips and tricks to offer. So for me the interviews are definitely useful and had some great tips and insights.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cartoon Animation, Plain and Simple By Amazon Customer An excellent and informative book on the art of exaggerated animation. This book greatly demystified the process of creating 3D animation for me, and although the included rig and plug-ins are made for Maya specifically, the techniques taught are actually applicable to many other software and even 2D animation in certain cases, since it is essentially aplying the 12 principles of animation to 3D animation. While I obviously got a lot out of this book, however, I should mention that 1) this book is made for over-the-top, cartoonist animation, and wouldn't be of much use to people who work on more realistic animation; and 2) like any other book or tutorial, you have to practice and follow along to actually improve, but I'm sure you already understand that. Overall, a great book that is already improving my animation work flow at college.
