"I like writers who believe in the word with every bone, and Jayinee Basu is one of those poets who writes with her flesh, her skin, with every hair on her body, with every single one of her bones. When I was reading Asuras, it occurred to me that I was imagining its author as a kind of double-edged knife: one side sharpened very thin with a poisoned edge, the other a kind of mirror in which poetry made us softer, more meticulous, more sincere with our dreams. -Luna Miguel, author of Bluebird and Other Tattoos

The drama of these poems unfolds around spaces of theory, faith, autobiography, love, physics, biology, and confession in a way that feels nicely loaded with meaning and context that is both familiar and unfamiliar to me.Don't get me wrong, though, its crux is personal, human drama and the aesthetics of longing, all anchored in moments that are delicate and sharp.I definitely recommend it.

It is both graceful and comfortingly relevant to our lives. Her poems concern power and ugliness between people ("Twin Beds on Cantrell St.), feelings that the possession of money and so, power, involve ("You are a Bad Person", "Bunny"), and San Francisco. Through her, are eyes see the soft-green hilly rained-on world and feel someone we love and trust hurt us ("Be Careful"). We say goodbye to the devices of the past, pressed up against the Pacific Coast ("Walkmans").She has provided us with her neat little artifacts of curious and attentive cognition, taking place in the twenty-first century.

The poems flow from technological references to hallucinatory experiences to naked emotion in mesmerizing ways. I have read it cover to cover a few times and I get the sense that it should be approached in this way - more like a “concept album” instead of just a collection of “songs”. Highly recommended!
