This book from cover to cover was filled with words that were meant to help those who make relationship mistakes. I was able to relate to 90% of what was written by the author. Don't judge the size of the book as a speed read. It took me a few days to finish it because I really wanted to get what I was suppose to get from it and I DID! I am so grateful to Charlie for being transparent and wanting to help women from making the same relationship mistakes. This book is a great gift for single as well as married women. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you want to make an effort to change bad relationship behaviors. She knocked it out of the park with this one!!! :)

I was able to read the book in one sitting. Charlie Marcol will have you crying, laughing and reflecting in one chapter. My favorite part of the book are the questionnaires/reflection section at the end of each chapter. This book is a fun and insightful read. You can really hear feel the wittiness and spirit of the author through her stories and advise. I would definitely recommend this book as a gift for someone who is newly entering a serious relationship or if you're coming out of a divorce and looking to find the other side of love.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thought-Provoking and Right on Time! By CaliStunner I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any woman considering marriage. Oftentimes, we place so much emphasis on the wedding day without putting much thought on the work we should be doing on ourselves before and after saying, "I do". "From the Florist to the Forest" challenges you to do the work to make sound decisions about marriage. I intend to gift this book to my single and married friends!

Poetry. Dazzling in its descriptions of a natural world imperiled by the hidden dangers of our nuclear past, this book presents a girl in search of the secrets of survival. In THE ROBOT SCIENTIST'S DAUGHTER, Jeannine Hall Gailey creates for us a world of radioactive wasps, cesium in the sunflowers, and robotic daughters. She conjures the intricate menace of the nuclear family and nuclear history, juxtaposing surreal cyborgs, mad scientists from fifties horror flicks and languid scenes of rural childhood. Mining her experience growing up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the writer allows the stories of the creation of the first atomic bomb, the unintended consequences of scientific discovery, and building nests for birds in the crooks of maple trees to weave together a reality at once terrifying and beautiful. THE ROBOT SCIENTIST'S DAUGHTER reveals the underside of the Manhattan Project from a personal angle, and charts a woman's—and America's—journey towards reinvention. "In THE ROBOT SCIENTIST'S DAUGHTER, Jeannine Hall Gailey charts the dangerous secrets in a nuclear family as well as a nuclear research facility. Her ecofeminist approach to the making of bombs, celebrates our fragile natural world. Full of flowers and computers, this riveting poetry captures the undeniable compromises and complexities of our times."—Denise Duhamel "What is her story? 'In this story,' Jeannine Gailey tells us, 'a girl grows up in a field of nuclear reactors. She gives us lessons in poison. And as we watch this heroine appear from various angles, in multiple lights we realize that just like this girl who 'made birds' nests / with mud and twigs, hoping that birds would / come live in them.' Gailey makes an archetype for a contemporary American woman whom she sees as beautiful—and damaged—and proud—and unafraid. And the Scientist? He 'lives alone in a house made of snow. / If he makes music, no one hears it.' America? It builds barbed wire 'to keep enemies out of its dream'—but we all are surrounded by these barbed wires of a country whose 'towns melt into sunsets, into dust clouds, into faces.' In subtle, playful, courageous poems, we are witnessing a brilliant performance."—Ilya Kaminsky "THE ROBOT SCIENTIST'S DAUGHTER gives us a magnificent voice who is at turns 'happy with the apple blossoms,' and yet whip-smart enough to know 'the beauties of voltmeter and oscilloscope.' But underneath the beautifully measured sheen and spark of these bright stanzas, is a human who opens up thrilling new worlds by also fearlessly inhabiting poems of sorrow, survival, and identity—one whose 'tongue is alive with lasers and [whose] song attracts thousands.'"—Aimee Nezhukumatathil The Robot Scientist's Daughter, by Jeannine Hall Gailey

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Poetry and Science, a great combination..... By gautami s tripathy I had read and reviewed Becoming the Villainess way back in 2009. I liked what Jeannine Hall Gailey had penned in that.Coming back to The Robot Scientist's Daughter, I liked the title. When I read the introduction by the poet, I was hooked to the poems. I could relate to the scientific stuff mentioned in the poems. My dad used to talk Physics to us during meal times. He explained the complicated scientific stuff in a very simplified manner. Theoretical physics still is part of my life.I have done my Masters in Inorganic Chemistry. When Gailey writes about various Elements and their properties and mentions Geiger–Müller counter, I know exactly what she is speaking about. These poems speak to me, reach out to me. When we say Nuclear, everyone thinks Nuclear bombs, Nuclear wars. No one thinks of the nuclear debris, which is more devastating then the bombs and wars. Why? Because it kills slowly, and spreads over generations.Gailey has personalized the poems and that connects to the heart. I paused at times, reflecting on the words, was saddened too, now and then. Rural childhood is mixed with straight laced scientists, consequences of our mindless nuclear experimentation. To what effect? Destruction in one way or the other. Each of the poems that talks of The Robot Scientist's Daughter, in one way or the other, fills us with poignancy, helplessness and stoic acceptance. I find poetry books hard to review but this one was easy for me despite being on a difficult topic of science, which most don't relate to.

By Karen J Weyant Jeannine Hall Gailey's fourth full-length collection of poetry, The Robot Scientist's Daughter, is a part coming-of-age exploration of the poet's life growing up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, part critical look at nuclear history in America. It's a departure from Gailey's previous collections, which often convey retellings of traditional fairy tales and stories of women in popular culture. Yet, fans of Gailey's work will be happy to see that her exploration of the fantastic has not disappeared in her newest book, as she travels back in time to use both personal narratives and segments of American history to explore our love/hate relationship with nuclear power. A haunting, yet fascinating, read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Radiant Collection By Suko Created by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, April is National Poetry Month. During this month, schools, libraries, poets, bloggers, and others in the U.S. celebrate poetry in a variety of ways. I'm doing my very small part to help keep the art of poetry alive, near the conclusion of National Poetry Month, with a review of The Robot Scientist's Daughter by poet and writer Jeannine Hall Gailey.Jeannine Hall Gailey served as the second Poet Laureate of Redmond, Washington. She's the author of three other books of poetry, Becoming the Villainess, She Returns to the Floating World, and Unexplained Fevers. She started writing her fourth book of poems soon after she completed her second book, She Returns to the Floating World, because the disaster at Fukushima occurred during the week that her book went to print, which was an impetus for her work. She also reviewed EPA reports from her rural hometown of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, known as "The Atomic City", and thought about how her own exposure to toxic waste has affected her health over the years. Oak Ridge was a production site for the Manhattan Project of 1942, the massive operation that developed the atomic bomb, and scientific development is still an integral part of the city's economy and culture. Additionally, she wanted to write about the influence of her father, a robotics professor and researcher, and about his contributions to science in the nuclear field. In the interview I received along with this book, the author says that The Robot Scientist's Daughter is her attempt to create a fairy tale from her autobiography. Published in 2015 by Mayapple Press, Jeannine also says that it's her most personal book to date, and she calls the composite character "The Robot Scientist's Daughter " a sci-fi version of herself. (Many of the poems include the words "The Robot Scientist's Daughter" in their titles, and then a word or phrase in parentheses.) Although the title of this collection is certainly unusual, in all of the poems, the poet describes herself, and her experience, in a clear and compelling manner. These poems possess style, substance--and science. She describes the white-tailed deer, catfish, and other creatures, as being full of hot particles (microscopic pieces of radioactive material that can become lodged in living tissue), and her background in science is evident in this work in countless ways. These poems create vivid images of the effects of radiation, which are terrifying and touching. Through her work, she wants to raise awareness that nuclear research is never harmless. Overall, The Robot Scientist's Daughter is a startling, commanding, and beautiful collection of poetry. Her use of language is exquisite and extraordinary. This collection of poetry is truly a profound "investigation of the beauties and dangers of science and nature", about "a girl in search of the secrets of survival", who loves life and discovers glimmers of hope ("nevertheless, there were violets to pick"). These poems touched me deeply, and made me more aware about the environmental, ethical, and social perils of nuclear power.

There's More Leaves on the Tree is about the author's 14 year journey in search of his great grandfather's Frank Bilberry's white father and African American mother. The book starts out with a visit to his grandfather's Ladell Bilberry old home site. The visit reveal that the old home site was now overtaken by the forest where it can barely be found any longer. The home he knew as a child has now fallen down with a few remnants left from the past. It was a place where his ancestral family and extended families once bought land raised and sold crops to make the best living they could. He reminiscences about how his mother and father once lived in this area. His mother really didn't like living on a farm and designed a way to convince her husband to move closer to the town of Marion, Louisiana. The author writes a chapter about ""The End of Jim Crow Education"" in Union Parish, Louisiana. He recalls how the Plessey vs Ferguson doctrine of 1896 and the Brown vs Education doctrine of 1954 co-existed at the same time. One law allowed African Americans to have separate but equal facilities as Whites but in 1954 the Brown vs Board of Education stated it was acceptable to go to the same schools. The book delineates the struggle his high school, the community and the Union Parish School Board had in trying to reconcile this dilemma when it was time for the senior class to graduate in 1970. The Bilberry surname originated from White immigrants from Alabama who made their way to the rich fertile land of Union Parish, Louisiana. Most of them bought land, raised and sold crops to make their living. Many owned slaves. Slaves were valuable property to the slave owners. Many mulatto children were fathered by slave owners with the slave female. It was not uncommon for this to continue after the emancipation of the slaves. The latter is the case with Frank Bilberry. He was born circa 1878 to a former slave holder that lived near his mother's family. His white father sired several other sister and brothers other slave and former wome. Like many other slaves of South several slaves used the surname Bilberry after their master's name after being emancipated. The book is filled with pictures that follows along with the story of the book. It has an extensive appendix at the end of the book that includes death certificates, marriage licenses, land patents, obituaries and photographs of both white and black Bilberry's and their extended families (Honeycutts, Horn, Nelson, Bridges, Feazel, Wilhite, Warren, Burch, Ellis, Archie, Armstrong, Roberts, Robinson, Montgomery and more) of Union Parish, Louisiana. Every Family has a family story to tell but someone must be willing to tell it.

I loved that I was able to fill in the blanks on my family trees. he is years ahead of me but I will get there. The Roberts/Jackson families have stories to be told, also. When your parents speak of the Bilberrys in such a loving way, you get to know the family before you read the book.

If you feel like your relationship is skating on thin ice and you're ready to repair and stabilize it, then this book is for you!

Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device. It's always fun to reflect back on how you and your significant other first got together. What's not to love about remembering the initial attraction and your first dates that were filled with giggles and butterflies? Whether that was a long time ago or fairly recent, it's a large part of the reason you're reading this book right now. Although you or your partner don't feel the same warm loving feelings at the present moment, you want to know if it's possible to get them back, and if so, then how? Things happen in a relationship that causes the positive emotions such as 'attraction' and 'respect' to morph into ugly feelings of anger or dislike. And yet in spite of that, you somehow still want to mend and salvage your relationship to bring back those old lovin' feelings. The time, emotions, and the large piece of ourselves that we invest into a relationship can make the thought of a break up really scary and dreadful. It's enough to cause panic or start to do rash, irrational, and ineffective things to try to save the union. This book is designed to help you do better: I'm going to help you mend your relationship with your significant other, stop a break up before it happens, and rekindle the flame you once had when you first met each other. Whether you only want help in trying to figure out if the relationship is even worth saving, or if you want to know how to stop him from walking out the door, let this book be your guide.

Interesting Guide That Makes You Think By Cathy Wilson How to Save a Relationship is a practical guide where the author uses their personal experiences to help guide you on making the right decisions with your relationship. My thinking...why would you want to save a relationship when someone doesn't want you! But that's just me! LolLots of great information to help you make the best relationship decision for you.

Well worth the time to read this book if you feel your relationship is heading for a split By John Hayes As Laney writes, relationships are hard work so it is worth trying to work things out if it looks as if the relationship is not working out.A really good point is that little time is spent on considering the other people who may be affected by the break up.If it is a divorce and children are involved,it is the children who can be affected more than the parents.A whole chapter is devoted to outlining what to do if you are about to be dumped, and there are some surprising revelations.Other chapters cover the things that can be done to try and prevent the separation, but if all else fails there is a chapter on preparing for the break up.

This was our first author visit and, wow, are we in love! Mrs. Beswick shared her precious picture book, Lonely Lola Ladybug, and kept our students enthralled with how the book was made from start to finish. Original artwork, story boards, the book displayed on the Smart board as she read, and the author's knowledge of small children all made for a stellar event for our school, our teachers, and our children. Lonely Lola Ladybug is a character in which every child can identify completely. From fear and loneliness to friendship and courage, Lonely Lola Ladybug touches every child who reads it and they will be all the better because of it.

The students had read or been read the story before she came, and the students loved the book. The rhyming patterns are fun and build comprehension with students because they can remember details. The story itself has a lovely message about finding friends. The illustrations are beautiful as well.

And does it really matter, then or now, 45 years later? What kind of LOVE allows this to happen in this crazy world. Perhaps there is more to learn here than I ever imagined.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. In the Great St. Exupery Tradition By Electra Flyer Rod Magner's Where you Been Boy: A LOVE STORY is a beautiful, haunting, and thought provoking story of a man struggling to understand the waste of war, ego, and hubris in the face of the beauty of love that life offers each of us.Rod's book is in the tradition of Antoine de Saint Exupéry's Flight to Arras, and one reviewer of that book described St. Ex as "one of those rare people that nature can produce: a man of action with the mind of a philosopher and the soul of a poet, with the ability to express them all with lucid clarity".I'm humbled to say that Rod, like St. Exupéry, embodies this same mix of talents, and his book reminds me of Flight to Arras in many ways. Though Where you Been Boy, is a bit more non-linear, once the reader finds the rhythm and pattern of Rod’s story (and let’s go of “thinking” about the time-line), it is immersive, with crisp imagery of both the beauty of flight, the power of camaraderie and friendship, and the darkness that flying to kill can bring to the soul.Perhaps my favorite passages in the text revolve around those times that Rod reflects on how we are all interconnected in unknown and unseen ways, while he is traveling in his biplane. Sharing a few bits of his experiences barnstorming with Richard, and meeting Carol was also special.Overall, I was quite moved by A LOVE STORY, and, I experienced the exact feelings I had when Rod took my wife and I on a magical flight around the San Juan Islands in Magic One—I was glad to have had the opportunity to share in the experience, I was thankful for the beauty of it all, and I was sad that it (both the flight and the book) had come to an end so quickly.Thank you Rod! I hope you continue to write and share your experiences with us!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By tmcmcqueen Reading it on my phone and can't put it down. Rod, you have a gift for writing especially about flying and the joys of aviation. But there is so much more than that in this little tome; I highly recommend it for anyone who has ever questioned, "What's this life about, and what's important?" That means, any and all of us! Thanks so much for sharing.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. WHERE YOU BEEN BOY is fine read. Buy it and tell your friends there's ... By RIck Hendon Rod Magner, to me, has always been the kind and gentle ex Navy flyer on Orcas Island who shares his compressed air for my bike tires and who always has time to talk and listen...and who loves flying. And he is all that, but he also has the powers of writing vivid unflinching prose. The man can tell a story, slam you back in the seat from a cat launch, make you sweat the coming night trap on a pitching carrier, show you the curvature of the Earth and ask you to forgive him for having killed men in war. He describes such a vivid Dalhart woman we all want to meet her, and the luckiest among us have. Above all, Rod unashamedly offers existential answers that distill into one word. Who knew he was an unrepentant romantic, even something of a mystic in the vein of Saint-Exupery and Richard Bach? WHERE YOU BEEN BOY is a fine read. Buy it and tell your friends there's a hero among us.

I love to do things with words, and poetry is what comes from such playing with words. Most of my poems are just my mind, playing with my heart's thoughts. Some of my poems come from life experience and others from nature or things that happen in life. In putting this book together, I found many of my poems are liked, for they are written in words that everyone can read and understand. I dream one day to hear someone say, "I read that poem and loved it." Nothing would make me more proud than to know my poems touched someone's heart in a good way. To write poems and not know if people will ever read them is a sad thought. Love is the power that moves the world. No matter if it is heartbreak or true passion, love has the power to be the strongest influence in our lives. Not all my poems are love poems. There are also poems of remembrance for the men who have laid down their lives for freedom or in the line of duty. So please read my words and enjoy them for what they mean and say to you. I would love to be thought of as a man who had love in his soul, and touched another's heart in some way. Daniel Clark is from Canada. He makes his living as a truck driver, but in his heart, there is love of poetry. He wrote these poems from life experience and nature. This is his first book. "I like writers who believe in the word with every bone, and Jayinee Basu is one of those poets who writes with her flesh, her skin, with every hair on her body, with every single one of her bones. When I was reading Asuras, it occurred to me that I was imagining its author as a kind of double-edged knife: one side sharpened very thin with a poisoned edge, the other a kind of mirror in which poetry made us softer, more meticulous, more sincere with our dreams. -Luna Miguel, author of Bluebird and Other Tattoos

The drama of these poems unfolds around spaces of theory, faith, autobiography, love, physics, biology, and confession in a way that feels nicely loaded with meaning and context that is both familiar and unfamiliar to me.Don't get me wrong, though, its crux is personal, human drama and the aesthetics of longing, all anchored in moments that are delicate and sharp.I definitely recommend it.

It is both graceful and comfortingly relevant to our lives. Her poems concern power and ugliness between people ("Twin Beds on Cantrell St.), feelings that the possession of money and so, power, involve ("You are a Bad Person", "Bunny"), and San Francisco. Through her, are eyes see the soft-green hilly rained-on world and feel someone we love and trust hurt us ("Be Careful"). We say goodbye to the devices of the past, pressed up against the Pacific Coast ("Walkmans").She has provided us with her neat little artifacts of curious and attentive cognition, taking place in the twenty-first century.

The poems flow from technological references to hallucinatory experiences to naked emotion in mesmerizing ways. I have read it cover to cover a few times and I get the sense that it should be approached in this way - more like a “concept album” instead of just a collection of “songs”. Highly recommended!

The Stone Circle Poems: The Collected Poems of Terry Wooten, by Terry Wooten

Review   “Wooten’s writing shows us a deeper meaning and mystery inherent in the physical. If he measures the world too much with poetry, as his sixth-grade daughter complained, his perspective is none-the-less deeply healing and counter-culture, showing us our lives are ripe with meaning. In his poetry we are natural in a natural world.” (Rose Bohn, poet and professor of English, Penn State University)“We created language to tell our stories. I have always subscribed to the notion that words should attempt to remain invisible behind the story they carry. Terry Wooten’s words are pure. His poems share wonderment, the connections, the feelings, the triumph, the failures, the experiences, and the small miracles that make up our human existence.” (Ben Mikaelsen, author of Touching Spirit Bear and Petey, Bozeman, Montana)“Stone Circle Poems is everything a collection of poetry should be: concentrated immortality, personal and universal, a time machine and a transportation device, bittersweet and fun. Terry Wooten’s work is, in a word, magical.” (Daryth Davey, poet, language and literature teacher, Salvador da Bahia, Brazil)“For more than 40 years Wooten’s poems have radiated the vitality and preciousness of everyday existence while his dedication to the oral tradition has kept the flame of art burning brightly. This collection is a testament to a life well lived in the service of poetry.” (Patrick Pfister, author of Pilgrimage: Tales of the Open Road, Barcelona, Spain)  “Terry Wooten is truly a modern-day bard. Many a poet owes a legacy to him, myself included. Wooten’s voice is so indomitable that his poems sing out on the page, resonating with that very primal place inside a reader where one longs to gather with one’s tribe around a fire, and listen to the wisdom collected here. His poems inspire surprise and wonderment -  prepare to be delighted and awed.” (Mi Ditmar, poet, creative writing instructor, Syracuse University and Mellon Grants Coordinator for the Central New York Humanities Corridor)“Terry Wooten is a fine poet in the tradition of Whitman and Williams. His work celebrates our history and our encounters with civilization. His poems show a humane and understanding heart, and a humor and wit that helps illuminate our daily lives.” (Herb Scott, the late poet and professor of English, Western Michigan University)

The book, Mending Fences: Building Bridges is a work describing the life-long process of adoption with particular emphasis on surrender and the effects on birth mothers. lt is a multi-faceted work including not only the history of adoption, but also the evolving changes in that institution today. It is an in-depth look at how little support was given to women surrendering children in the years of 1955 to 1970. This study and its conclusion is based on personal interviews and a survey of women who surrendered infants. lt includes extensive case histories as well as the outline of a workshop created to help prepare women for the aftermath of the search and reunion process today. Also included are an annotated bibliography and resource guide to adoption support groups, publications, and Internet sites of interest. This work will give insight into the world of maternity homes and disrupted families. lt also shows the loneliness of young women essentially abandoned by their friends, families and boyfriends and problems in their emotional development after the birth and surrender of their child. The taboos of sex and unmarried pregnancies are discussed as well as avenues of choice available to pregnant women today.

I was left with a deeper understanding of By Pat Hansen As an adoptive parent myself, as well as a mother of a teen that was pressured into terminating a pregnancy, I couldn't wait to read this book. The author used her personal story of adoption to fuel a passion to understand the process of adoption and how it affected the birth mother. Her research was in-depth, covering an impressive 20 years of research, dedication and discovery. Her ability to convey the results of her research I found to be remarkable. Her warm and giving spirit shines as she moves through this incredible labor of love.I was left with a deeper understanding of the evolution of the adoption process, both past and present from the perspective of not only the birth mother but the "triad" including the child and the adoptive parent. The book was more than I expected, presenting the past, present and future of humanity and how we evolve and transcend old ideas in order to make room for growth. We needed the author to show us the way it once was, what it is like now and to direct us to future changes. She is an inspiration and an advocate who has dedicated her life to making changes, working one on one, presenting workshops, and on a legislative level. She continues to be involved. Certainly a lady that walks the talk.***** 5 stars from me, I couldn't put it down.

A Labor of Love, Compassion and Scholorship By Amazon Customer I Loved This Book! This is a must read for anyone who has ever been involved in any aspect of adoption. Whether you’re a birth mother, an adoptive family member or an adoptee yourself, the information contained in Ms. Rodgers book is priceless. Anyone in the field of adoption, no matter how knowledgeable you already are, you can benefit. For anyone else, the stories of the young women who gave up a child are worth the price of the book in terms of dispelling so many false beliefs most of us have held about them. For myself a social worker and psychotherapist, I believed that once these young women gave up their child, they were able to just go on with their lives. Boy was I wrong; their decision altered their lives forever. Ms. Rodgers documents persuasively the variety of ways in which these 372 surveyed women were negatively impacted. Ms. Rodgers also documents how little support was given to women in the past and how poorly prepared they were for the aftermath. As an adoptee, Ms. Rodgers brings deep compassion to all involved. Surrender: A Journey of Adoption Mending Fences: Building Bridges, is a fascinating, insightful and compassionate read, from a committed advocate and meticulous researcher. Don’t pass this one up.Gary Hansen, LCSW

Third Grade Mix-Up (Sidney & Sydney), by Michele Jakubowski

From School Library Journal Gr 2-4-Sidney Fletcher and his mom have just moved to the town where she grew up to be close to his grandparents. Little does he know that fashionista Sydney Greene also lives in Oak Grove and will be in the same class. Much to her dismay, on the first day of school, Sydney learns that there is another Sidney in her class and it is a boy. To make matters even worse, she has been separated from her best friend, Harley Livingstone. Adding insult to injury, she walks into the classroom and accidentally sits in the guy Sidney's chair. The situation improves dramatically when Sidney and Sydney discover they have several things in common, including the game Galaxy Conquest. The children narrate in alternating chapters. The plot is well defined, and the humor is definitely contemporary. The full-color illustrations give clarity to the characters. A good addition to early chapter book sections.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TNĪ±(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Review The Sidney & Sydney series debuts with a straightforward story alternately narrated by two classmates with homophonic names and a few shared interests. Sidney has traveled extensively with his family, and Sydney aspires to be a world traveler; they both love art museums; and the clincher they are mutual fans of the video game Galaxy Conquest. Both Jakubowski and Montalto flatter their audience s sense of independence and autonomy: I'm only eight years old, but it's never too early to be fashionable, image-conscious Sydney tells readers, while jokester Sidney, sitting alone at lunch, knows that it s really dorky to get a note from your mom when you are eight years old. But it did make me feel a little better. (The stylish students in Jablonski's full-color illustrations, meanwhile, look much older than eight, but what kids think of themselves and their peers as young?) After some early stumbles, the two third-graders become fast friends, a relationship that s cemented as they try to make Halloween a success. Sidney's narrative can be repetitive and Sydney s melodramatic, but readers should appreciate the book s contemporary tone and humor. Ages 6 8. (Feb.) --Publishers Weekly

About the Author Working at a school (and having two of her own children) gives Michele Jakubowski more than enough experiences to draw from when writing middle-level fiction. Michele has also written other popular books in the Sidney & Sydney series and the Perfectly Poppy early chapter book set. Michele lives in Powell, Ohio, with her husband, John, and their children, Jack and Mia.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Cheerful, Engaging Friendship Story By Pop Bop This is a cheerful and easy to read story about a boy and a girl, (both third graders), who share names that sound alike and meet through the confusion that that creates. During the course of the book they become friends and share in some adventures and some likes and dislikes, and become friends by the close of the story. The book is generous in tone and the characters aren't particularly typed by gender, (girl Sydney rules at the video game Galaxy Conquest), but there isn't anything preachy or heavy-handed going on. I tend to measure these books against the "Angelina Ballerina" series, mainly because they are my eight year old's favorites. Angelina books are a little dreamy and soft focused, with pastel illustrations, calm characters and very mild lessons about responsibility, honesty and the like. They are very satisfying reads just a touch beyond chapter book level. Well, that seems to be where this book is. But, "Third Grade Mix-Up" is more modern, or at least more here and now. The illustrations are brighter and more stylized. The characters are more current. Dialogue is sharper and more to the point. These aren't two ballerina mice; these are two third graders with third grade issues and third grade activities and third grade drama. And all of that is fine. I can easily see a first or second or third grade reader being interested in these characters, and curious about what will happen next, and being able to read and to follow the narrative. There's no hold-your-breath excitement, but sometimes just an interesting story is what an early reader wants. So, certainly worth a look, and certainly a nice addition to the kid library. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.
