In 2005, America played witness to one of the most colossal natural disasters in its recorded history. In addition to cataclysmic, infrastructural damage inflicted by the infamous “Hurricane Katrina”, the psychological impact that ensued proved substantial in its own right. Our country’s fuming frustration of unresolved social issues would come to a head, due to the poor federal response to the Gulf Coast after Katrina. Steven, a Dallas, TX native, and his mother moved to the Gulf Coast in 2001. After his father lost his battle to alcoholism, his mother decided to start a new path in life back in her hometown of Pass Christian, MS. Though dragged to the small town life quite unwillingly, that ungrateful and whiny teen would soon be faced with to his own new path–a path necessary to reach adulthood and to, overall, find his niche in the world. But little did they both know, they’d be a part of American History in the most intimate of ways. Using Katrina as a “B.C. to A.D” defining event, “Product of the Storm” uses chronologically ordered diary entries, poems, and essays to narrate a young man’s struggle to find his identity in a stormy world. But, it also serves as a reference point of the views of the country–the views on the issues of addiction, miseducation, war, global warming, political corruption, street violence, religion, racism, and poverty, pre and post Hurricane Katrina. Be witness to what the storm made them.

About the Author My name is Steven Buster. I go by, in the writing world, The Stormy Poet. And, in case you are wondering, my pen name is attributed to my ongoing fascination with weather phenomena–one I have had since childhood–and how I relate my artistic creative process to it. The goal of this blog site is to showcase my literary works, artistic inspirations, and to provide lifestyle guidance and resources aimed at community improvement. I strive to combine life lessons and the language arts, in a manner, in which they compliment and reinforce one another. Through this platform, I seek not to change people’s minds but to broaden and expand them.

Today is 5/6/15 and I'm already done reading the book. This is a great coming of age story, that I feel many people can relate too. A young teenager trying to find his way. The thing that stood out to me was his origins. I never heard this type of story come from the perspective of a black male from the suburbs. I thought it was very brave of Steve to share his personal journal entries with the world, and it made me realize how much we all have in common no matter your background.I also have never read a book formatted like this. The way he included essays, and poems to help describe his emotions during specific times in his life I feet is genius. For this to be his first book I am very impressed, and cant wait to the next.

Not what expected, very well written By Amazon Customer When I purchased the book, I thought it was going to be about a journey through the events of Hurricane Katrina. Although part of it was, it was mostly about a young African American boy growing up trying to find his identity. Parts of it were extremely funny, while others were extremely sad. Even though I am not African American, I still felt like I understood exactly what he was talking about when he was going on his journey to find his place in the world. Definitely worth the read.

The Essays and Diary entries in this book are well written, interesting, and honest. The book as a whole is well made and intriguing, several times while reading it I found myself wanting to read just one more chapter or one more poem. I would recommend picking up this book.
