This second full collection of prose poems from Mary Carroll-Hackett traces through a life spent in liminal places, particularly that often shadowy and always sacred realm between life and death, touching on both the isolation and the grace, even the bliss, such an existence can bring. Poems made of love and heartbreaking loss, the collection works toward healing, a reconciliation of soul and self, of body and spirit, of the peace to be found even while walking with a foot in both worlds.

Just recently I thought of looking for cheaper ones online, and voila! I was not disappointed. I got this one from Grace Moore. Apart from finding a list of international, unique and lovely names, I appreciate knowing the importance of checking out appropriate names, ones that will not cause the child to be the subject of bullying just because their name means something funny, I defo agree to that.Highly recommended!

I'd recommend Faber and Maslish's other books, How to Talk so Kids will Listen..., and How to Talk so Kids Can Learn... I give this book four stars, simply because I've given the others five stars each, and I wanted to show that you should perhaps read these books first.I found this one in the library, somewhat desperate at a time when my two-year old was regularly trying to pinch and scratch my newborn baby. What to do? It felt awful. I clutched Siblings Without Rivalry to me like a lifebuoy.Did it help? Emphatically, yes! There is tons of helpful material here, especially the stuff about helping children to express their feelings appropriately, and the advice to treat children uniquely rather than equally. I was worried that the authors might just rehash what they said in How to Talk so Kids Will Listen..., but they don't. The format is familiar - case studies, cartoons etc, as is the general approach to life, but the content is a real development.I have to admit that some of the book is less relevant when one of the siblings in question is still a young baby. But I'm glad I read it when I did. I'll be coming back to it in the future.

I'm sure I will continue to consult it as my children get older. I really like the "How To Step In So You Can Step Out" strategy that teaches parents how to intervene by acknowledging the feelings of both kids in the heat of the moment which defuses the situation so the kids can work it out themselves. I like the simple cartoons that clearly illustrate the communication "do's" and "donts" with quibbling siblings. I also like the way the discipline tips maintain the dignity of both the parent and the child. When I am able to resist "automatic parenting" reactions like yelling and threatening, and use some of the great techniques I've learned, I feel so much more competent as a parent. Because I have three young children (5, 3, and 2 months), I would like to also recommend a new pocket-sized book that has been very helpful addressing my specific current sibling issues. Appropriately entitled "The Pocket Parent", the entire book is written for parents with normal, but often challenging preschoolers. There are hundreds of short bulleted suggestions addressing sibling issues such as: "the new baby", "comparing and labeling", "sibling rivalry", "hitting and hurting others", "biting", "bad words", "I hate you's", "listening", "power struggles", and "traveling with the kids". These two books with exactly the same discipline philosophy compliment each other--both having great examples of the exact words to try in many sibling situations. One of the strategies suggested in both books that has really reduced my frustration level is to redefine being "fair" as "meeting each child's needs" rather than focusing on being totally "equal" at all times. This thought is very helpful because my kids seem to always keep score...and I, no matter how hard I try--will often lose! Although it doesn't come naturally, I am learning to change my behavior to address needs. For example, Sunday morning I painstakingly tried to serve the exact same pancake presentation to each of the kids--and my son whined, "Mommy, that's not fa-a-ir!" and he continued to scream that his sister's pancakes were much bigger and browner than his (...in his mind, proof that I love her more). Instead of really losing it and yelling back that he was absolutely wrong, lunging for my ruler to prove it...I PAUSED...And, before I responded, I took a deep breath (...maybe 2 deep breaths) and focused my response on solving the jealousy problem. In total control of the situation, I looked my son directly in his eyes, put my hand gently on his shoulder as I replied in a very calm voice, "Hmmmmmmm. It sounds like you're still hungry, Brian...Here are two more delicious pancakes just for you!" GREAT ADVICE...and it worked!! Bad news...It does take practice, but feels so good when your thoughtful response avoids a no-win power struggle.

From the moment she arrived home from the hospital, we were locked in mortal combat. Our rivalry finally ended when I left home at 18. We are now good friends, but I wish that my parents had read this book during our childhood.Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, authors of "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk", share years of experience gained through their own parenting trials and through those of the thousands of parents who have attended their workshops. Their aim is to teach parents the skills and techniques necessary to redirect rivalry into cooperation. Topics such as teaching parents to stop treating their children equally instead of uniquely, helping children express their angry feelings acceptably, motivating children to solve their own problems, and handling fighting are expertly covered. This best-selling book puts the reader right into the middle of a fictional workshop, sitting with other frustrated parents, asking questions and working out solutions. Each chapter begins with questions aimed at helping parents to understand and acknowledge the feelings behind a common problem. The book then describes the communication skills necessary to defuse the rivalry and gain cooperation instead of arguments. Theory is put into practice in cartoon form. A problem is presented in a cartoon, which shows the "typical" way an untrained parent would respond, and then the way the problem could be resolved using the new techniques the authors teach. The last chapter of the book explores ways in which we can mend fences and renew our relationships with our own adult siblings. Several poignant stories illustrate that it is never too late to learn effective communication skills. I found this book useful for parents of only children, since the skills presented are as useful for dealing with one child as for many. For parents of two or more children, this is a MUST READ

When the United Nations Charter was adopted in 1945, states established a legal `paradigm' for regulating the recourse to armed force. In the years since then, however, significant developments have challenged the paradigm's validity, causing a `pardigmatic shift'. International Law and the Use of Force traces this shift and explores its implications for contemporary international law and practice.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Intellectually Honest Primer on Use of Force Law By Matthew Vogel Anthony Clark Arend and Robert Beck have written an intellectually honest piece exploring the use of force under international law. The book begins with a discussion of the development of the law regarding the use of force from ancient times to the writing of the United Nations charter. The book then goes on to fairly examine state behavior since the UN Charter and poses the question: how has custom strayed from the thinking that inspired the Charter and the mechanisms that it set up. They give an objective, balanced overview of the state of law regarding a number of issues from intervention in civil and mixed conflict to rescue of nationals abroad and dealing with terrorists. Though they discuss all sides of the issue, Arend and Beck ultimately conclude that although international law's intentions at the end of World War II were nobel -- and despite the fact that the Charter paradigm still exists on paper -- a realistic assessment of the facts requires the conclusion that the paradigm has been rejected by states through their practices and thereby ceased to be international law.

Tom Connolly joined An Garda Síochána in 1955, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. His early days on the force were spent in various villages and towns around Ireland, tracking petty thieves, raiding pubs and patrolling country roads on his bicycle. Back then, before the dawn of DNA profiling, policemen relied on local knowledge and intuition - as well as careful evidence-gathering and interrogation techniques - to make their cases.

Over his forty-year career, Connolly rose to the rank of Detective Superintendent, working on high-profile thefts, assaults and murders with the National Technical Bureau.

This fascinating memoir offers an insight into the day-to-day work of the gardaí, and celebrates the courage and dedication of all those who risk their lives to keep us safe.

Once, when I was studying at school, I decided that I want to develop web applications. When I started on that path, I was unaware of the whole new chaotic world waiting for me. This world offered me an endless array of technologies, each of which seemed like an island in itself that was interrelated with other islands in a weird way. I spent months picking up pieces of the information about front-end and back-end, on how the data from a database gets into a website, and how the website itself gets into the Internet; why you can’t use HTML only, and why Ruby is a good choice, and PHP is a bad one. I was desperate for a guidebook that would explain in simple terms where to start and which way to go, which technologies and terms I should study first, and which of them I might use later. And now, with over 6 years of experience of working with numerous companies, including online language learning market leader and top mobile ads company and knowing from my own experience how difficult the entry-level job market is, I feel it would be very unfair of me not to share my ideas on how to eventually become a web developer. That’s how the book called “Self-education for web developers” was created. This is a guide that will help everyone who choses the same path as me not to lose their enthusiasm and follow the right directions. What’s inside? We will go all the way from choosing a code editor to creating a complete web application living on the server. You will learn everything you need to know, why and in which order. 18 chapters and each of them is dedicated to an essential topic that is an absolute must-learn for any web developer including UNIX SYSTEMS, GIT, HTML/CSS, WEB-INSPECTOR, FRONT-END FRAMEWORKS, JAVASCRIPT , RUBY, GEMS & BUNDLER, RVM &RBENV, RAILS, TESTING, POSTGRESQL, DEPLOYMENT... 61 resource including some of the best online courses, articles, books, interactive manuals that will help you to master the technology in the shortest time. 1 step-by-step plan that will help you to develop your first web application and find your first job in web development. 4 bonus chapters that will give you further guidelines in your self-training. Regular updates! The guide-book gets even better with time!

Self-education for Web Developers: What to Begin With and Where to Move to Learn How to Develop WEB Applications, by Kirill Shirinkin

Review «I am trying to learn web development for many years. Wihout required education (and I've studied liberal arts), without mentors. What I have in the end? Roughly speaking, nothing. The reason is that there are a way too many tools to solve same problem. For example, lets start with python. Without properly learning it, switch to ruby. Then there is an understand that it would have been better to learn some front-end first... etc etc. And in the book there is a concrete path: from where to start and what you should avoid. It's good when there is someone who already climed the mountain which you are only beginning to climb and when this someone can show you the right direction and the next step to make. That's way I think the book in general is well written, it's useful and it will find it's reader.» redVi, unix-lab.org «That's exactly what I'd like to have when I started my studies. Short and at same time it covers all the important areas of web apps development. Also, lots of really useful links to the relevant study material. I envy people who will read this book on time.» Dmitry Sharikov, @unity_359 «The book is really cool, for now I just quickly read it through but I think I will learn a lot from resources inside. And I finally understood why programmers need to write tests.» D. Lukyanov, kakawka05@gmail.com «The book is a great starting point if you want to start with web development with RoR. All technologies that newbies need to know are well covered. The book allows not to get lost if the ocean of information that is required for effecient learning.» Yuri Solyanik, j-son.ru

I am looking forward to the bright future of smart real time analysis of big volumes of data, AI and Internet of Things. They, I believe, are the next big steps for technological progress.Teaching:The only way to eliminate talent shortage in software engineering field is to educate people, through content or through teaching them personally. That's why I am trying to fill the gap in high quiality programming content by creating this content. It's also the reason I founded mkdev.me - programming mentorship platform, where me and my team are helping people to learn web-development. Guide into the world of web development when you don't know where to get started By Amazon Customer As a senior web developer working for an international company that began as a small startup, I sometimes get asked (typically by people who know just a bit of programming): how do you become a web developer? There are two ways. The long way is to study four years of computer science and then do a few internships. The short way is to sit down with a computer, get started and apply for a practical job as soon as possible. For learning web development the short way, all resources are out there on the internet. But you need to find them. K. Shirinkin's book can help you do exactly that. The very short reference is a guide into the world of web development when you don't know where to get started. It covers the most important practical topics in a web developer's work (e.g. editors, Unix, Git, CSS, HTML, JS, Ruby as backend) each in a chapter of just two or three pages. Each chapter summarizes one topic and contains pointers to free online resources such as tutorials or references. You can then use these resources to actually learn the topics in depth. The author's choice is to focus on a Ruby-on-Rails stack. The book is a very quick read and ensures you cover the most important domains of web development. The writing is easy and does not require technical knowledge. The descriptions and references outline some of the most important practical basics of web development. These basics do not change as quickly as many trends in the field. Therefore, it seems worth reading to me (even if the days of RVM may be numbered). If you read it and study the referenced material, I believe this book may very well help you to educate your self to become a web developer.

A great guide for the do-it-yourself learner. It's chock-full of wisdom from an experienced programmer and links to online resources that go into depth on each of the topics covered.I was planning on giving this book four stars as I at first thought that the book didn't dive as deeply into some of the topics as I wanted - like Testing for example. Then, as I struggled when testing out two projects in different versions of Rails I came back to the book and paid more attention to the rvm/rbenv section. The solution was there all along and I had just not read it carefully enough! It's not a book with many words that shows you how to do things over and over again until you understand. It's a book of few words that goes straight to the point. I just needed to pay attention more closely. Also, the links at the end of every section point to some of the best online free resources I've seen to dive deeper into that topic.Only thing I would change is, perhaps, that the big cover images in each section don't look so great on my Kindle.

It explains step by step which topics should be learned and why they deserve your attention. I doubt an experienced developer will find anything useful in this book, because the main goal of author – to give a direction to a newbie and it done with 100% quality.

This third edition of Fujitsu's popular MEF-CECP study guide has been updated to align with MEF-CECP Certification Blueprint C (the document that governs MEF-CECP exam material from October 2015 until it is superseded). Like previous editions of the study guide, this edition is designed for two purposes: to help you prepare for the MEF-CECP exam and to serve a practical general reference book explaining MEF-defined Carrier Ethernet concepts and standards. The guide features careful explanations, numerous custom color graphics, and more than 200 practice questions. The study guide assumes that you have a basic understanding of Ethernet, but no prior knowledge of Carrier Ethernet. The guide covers all topics that are included in the MEF-CECP exam (specified by Blueprint C). Material is presented systematically, beginning with MEF service definitions (the core content that accounts for most exam questions) and building outward. Each lesson ends with a set of multiple-choice review questions similar to those appearing in the MEF-CECP exam.Content in this edition of the study guide has been expanded, restructured, and revised to align with MEF-CECP Certification Blueprint C. Core lessons have been updated to align with recently published MEF standards (6.2, 10.3 and 45) that refine and augments Carrier Ethernet service definitions and attributes.

This book helps me be more aware of my situation and actually take a step back to really think if it's worth getting angry for. I've literally have ruined relationships because of my angry issues. I think I've been better because of books like this.

Gray As a current practitioner of anger management techniques, I’ve been searching for new channels of support during my current regime. I was referred to this guide by a friend and digested it immediately. The material is succinct and to the point. The author is obviously a studied authority on the subject and his writing displays it. From his information on the 10 cognitive distortions to a detailed breakdown as to why anger affects us, I don’t recall learning so much information on the subject of anger management. Sure, I’m familiar with being told what the practices are, but for someone to illuminate me on the possible reasons WHY I’m angry and the stimulus involved has helped me take major strides in my struggle.Regarding the practices that this manual advocates, I’ve found that the subject on monitoring my arousal levels and forgiveness were very important subjects to learn. The illustrations that went along with the subjects spoken were also helpful and lent a strong visual along with the textual information that I was absorbing. All in all I am thrilled to have been referred to such a stellar guide and now have new resources that I’ve never possessed prior. In summation, if you are looking for a definitive guide for dealing with your anger issues I don’t think you can do better than this material. I know that it will remain in my library as a point of reference for a long time to come.

But from being angry every now and then and having a reason for it to being angry all the time there is a long road and a big difference. I have met around me people that seemed angry all the time and for sure this is not a happy way of living. As I am passionate about psychology and trying to understand complex behaviors I found this book to be interesting and easy to read and understand. Can be of actual help for people living in a constant angry phase or for those around them that are trying to help out, and on top is quite helpful for managing effectively the angry moments, even if this is not a disorder, but only a natural reaction.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. More than anything I thought I could ever know. Great! By David H. Birley Folks, I need to be honest about something here. I have given people help and advice with tech things for years -- actually since 1985. I am the geek that folks gravitate towards when they have a tech question. There is, actually, a problem with that. I could most likely be a big help for a person with a question about Windows 95. I got my first copy of that in February of 1995, and made 110 phone calls to Microsoft Tech Support. In addition I purchased the thousand page book the Microsoft published about the product. So mastering this toy, the iPad should be a breeze for me, right? I mean it is just something that kids can use to entertain themselves, isn't it? Go buy one, press the appropriate buttons and get started. Simple. So why on earth would anyone, let alone an "expert:" like me want to bother with a 500 page book about it? For one thing, who's ever going to read a monster book like that anyway? So, let's consider the fact that there are different ways that people learn from books. Some folks, the ones that I call "theoretical learners" will sit down and read a manual from cover to cover, the way I would read a novel. Once they complete the reading, they will return to the beginning and start applying what they have learned. These are the same folks who make notes in the margins, underline and highlight things, and generally mess up the appearance of the book. The other group are what I call "practical learners". I'm one of those. When I got my first manual about computer programming, the very first page told what to do to bring up "Hello world" on my screen. I stopped right there and did it. I did not turn the page until it was done. Worked for me.So when I received this book, my plan was simple -- I already knew almost everything about how to use my iPad, so I would just skim through it, find a couple of things that I thought might be interesting, and then write the review. After all, the book is just a hair short of 500 pages. 32 of those pages are the Index. The Index? Whoa, what's going on here. Maybe I better put on my "Hello world" hat and take a closer look. And here is where the amazing thing happened. I used my usual "do as you go" approach, and by page 8 -- did you see that? PAGE EIGHT -- I had learned five new things I had never discovered before about my iPad. I returned to the Table of Contents, and read a totally amazing collection of headings offering guidance on things I had never even imagined my tablet could do. And it is well written and comprehensive without an overabundance of techie terms. Does have one tiny weakness, but I won't drop a star because of it. The author and his editor appear never to have heard about not splitting infinitives. They would have had "to never split" in that last sentence. Grammar police in me cringes at it, but no one star penalty anyway. The book as a whole is clearly worth every star it can receive.I received this product free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

Lots of info, great pictures, many different models and updated for iPad 2 By Ursula For $9.99 you get: Anything you ever wanted to learn about your iPad. I was really overwhelmed when I started to go through it. I had no idea what I was missing. At first I thought it was fairly basic and that I knew most of the stuff since the iPad is very intuitive but as I kept going I realized how little I know. In my case particularly Cloud and how to use Evernote. What I most like is that it has the basic info and then a "Go further" section for those who want to know more about each subject. There are lots of pictures and illustrations and a "It's not all good section" which points to some areas that can be pitfalls or just confusing. I'll be using this book for a long time and look forward to really utilizing that expensive tablet it took me 2 years to save for.The only complaint I have is that the book doesn't stay open. It is so difficult to maneuver when you're trying to follow the steps on the iPad. I got this book for review and if I had bought it I may have returned it for that reason. I would probably be willing to pay $15 if the book could stay flat. You can bend it and put something heavy on it to hold it open or bend it quite a bit which may make the book pages from apart. Hence the 1-star deduction, not for content which is great but for the format. Not all the items will be in the place the books says. I have an iPad 2 Air and where the book says to look in Settings is not where it said but it did point me in the general direction.

I know I am because the iPad was / is intended to be intuitive and it is. Apple does have beginner’s classes in their stores, but I’m distance-challenged and never got a chance to take them. Online tutorials are great, but a book is even better. I do have Wiley’s iPad for the Older and Wiser, a book that’s fine for the rank beginner, but I need more than that. FYI, I’d heartily recommend the Wiley for the newbie or that older and wiser person.I do love the fact that there are comprehensive visuals along with the text. If I want to learn about syncing photos, I see a screen shot that has numbered pointers that accompany step-by-step directions. It’s almost as if someone is there pointing and explaining how to work through an issue. How do I sync? How can I access my albums? How do I transfer? Rosenzweig has made it much easier for me to work with my iPads without having to work with the online tutorials. When not all is good, there’s are great bright red sidebars “It’s Not All Good,” explaining where I might have problems. This too I appreciate. It certainly will save me a lot of headaches when I’m trying to learn new concepts. Obviously no book is a one-size-fits-all book, but rather one that can be tailored to the individual’s needs. I’m going to be using this as a reference, picking and choosing things I want to work with.If you do like online tutorials, I’ve noticed a small section on how to ask Siri to search for them. When I checked out the very comprehensive index, I’m seeing several other references as to how to search. I do have a few iPads I use frequently and this covers iOS 9 for any I choose to use. This especially like just in case I choose to use one over the other or think about upgrading. Definitely the book I’ve been waiting for.CONTENTS:Chapter 1  Getting Started     3Generations of iPads     3    Identifying Your iPad     4    iOS 9     5The iPad Buttons and Switches     6    The
