Winner, 2015 New Mexico Book Award, PoetryCurrent Finalist, Lambda Literary Award, Lesbian Poetry Longlist Finalist, Julie Suk AwardOver the Rainbow selection, American Library AssociationA biography-in-poems of Georgia O'Keeffe, interwoven with the poet's lyric accounts of a solitary month in a primitive desert cabin. A narrative-drivencollection that reads like a novel, this book delves into issues of creativity, feminism, and relationships, while exploring turn-of-thelast century New York City and the New Mexico highdesert of the 1930s and today. "Georgia O'Keeffe's remarkable life and work inspired this poetic meditation on everything from the pleasures and pains of love to the transformations that time works on an individual. And just as the artist distilled the essence of her subject matter, abstracting from flowers and bones, landscapes and clouds, a vivid story of her walk in the sun, so Jessica Jacobs discovers a vibrant music rooted in portraiture. 'How little it takes/ to make home unfamiliar,' she writes. And home in this stunning book turns out to be the entire universe. Make yourself comfortable. There is so much to taste and see."--Christopher Merrill, Necessities and From the Faraway Nearby: Georgia O'Keeffe as Icon

Review "In her eloquent poems, Jessica Jacobs artfully intertwines her own voice with Georgia O'Keeffe's words in this poet's exploration of the painter's sensitivity, aesthetics, character, and courage."--Laurie Lisle, Portrait of an Artist: A Biography of Georgia O'Keeffe“A sensuous homage to Georgia O’Keeffe, the patron saint of the American Southwest, and her relationship with photographer Alfred Stieglitz.”—Sarah Meyer, O, The Oprah Magazine"What is often called 'inspiration' in art is, more accurately, obsession: it is what gives life to language, as Jessica Jacobs' obsession with the artist Georgia O'Keeffe makes these pages breathe and O'Keeffe a living voice and presence. Interwoven with these sharply incised, vibrant, and painstakingly researched poems are lyric prose accounts of the author's own time alone in the desert, drawing these poems and a deepened awareness out of this accompanied solitude."--Eleanor Wilner, Reversing the Spell: New and Selected Poems“Artists and writers share many things, including a passion for observing and detailing the natural world. In this wonderful debut collection, Jacobs crafts a portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe and the striking landscapes she pained. The poet intertwines two story lines—journal entries set in contemporary New Mexico and letters between O’Keeffe and her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz—each thread reverberating with the other as they dwell on themes of love, solitude, and creativity. In a combination of lyric poetry and prose entries, Jacobs masterfully describes the setting: “I walk barefoot in the riverbed. The dry/ sand is peppery and coarse.” Not even bird song goes unnoticed, “each strand tied back to its singer// audible troughs of air. . .displaced by the wingbeats/ of low-flying/ hawks.” Jacobs vivifies both desert landscapes and New York City, where O’Keeffe first met Stieglitz, but she does more than describe how the vistas look, delving deeply and making philosophical connections: “A door// is everything a painting/ wants to be. Portal, promise.” . . . VERDICT An outstanding collection that focuses on art and biography, anchored by a rich sense of place.—Doris Lynch, Library Journal

In Pelvis with Distance, she has rendered a moving portrait of Georgia O'Keefe, conjuring an artist in her most intimate moments. By illuminating O'Keefe's experiences with loneliness and grief and persistence and beauty, she taps into a more universal expression of these states. This book is about O'Keefe, but it is also about Jacobs, and about all of us.

If we’re lucky though, some poems, in the act of their creation, do us the great favor of writing us into existence, too. Now, this is a rare thing. And what’s even more rare is when the poet can convey the reciprocal power of creation in such a way that readers not only recognize a new existence in the poet, but walk away with a new existence of their own.Jessica Jacobs’ debut collection, Pelvis With Distance, changed my geography. These poems altered my landscape. They reinvented my definition of hunger. They gave me a new understanding about the concepts of miles and heart and love and longing and the courage it takes to allow these things to intersect.Say this. Say you have an idea for a project, a book. You’re pulled by artistic ambition, by the spark of an idea, by the gnawing in your gut that all artists recognize. By a voice in your head, or your soul, that won’t shut up until you do something about it.Say your subject is Georgia O'Keeffe. Say you’re drawn to her paintings, to their settings, to the solitude of the place she went for inspiration, to hear her own voice. Say that place is the desert of New Mexico, and in a dare of fate and muse and dedication, you find yourself alone in that same desert, in a room with covered mirrors, in a place so quiet that you become the beast of yourself, that as crazy as it sounds, you become so animal that you hear the easy running of your own blood.Say you had no choice but to come here. Tell yourself it’s because of the way O'Keeffe was misunderstood. Or the way she took control of her own artistic presence and career. But then finally begin to understand that you’re drawn to something else. You’re drawn to her ability to allow herself a partner, a lovely haunting, a powerful thing that seeps through her solitude, her long separations and into a long distance romance with a man who was the love her life. The love of her life. The more time you spend alone, these are the words that echo. The more you study O'Keeffe and get inside her head, the more you get inside your own head. Finally, finally there is a moment where everything clicks. Instead of seeing O'Keeffe's face or your own face, you see the face of another poet, but it’s not the hallucinations you’d been warned you’d experience in the desert. It’s a projection your own destiny. It’s the face of the love of your life. And so you, without meaning to, begin to interject yourself into the poems, and into these lives, and into our lives as readers, and do you know what we do? We follow. We’re pulled. We have no choice. And the poems begin to write their own endings. And somehow, the poems become your life, a life you write into existence. What Jessica Jacobs did with this book was a sucker punch, a poetic biography that ends up being as much about her heart, about our hearts, as it is about O'Keeffe's heart. And, yes, because of this, because of what she’s written, the geographies of our lives are changed. So too is the way we view Georgia O'Keeffe.Anne Sexton told us,“Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.”She said, “Love? Be it man. Be it woman. It must be a wave you want to glide in on,give your body to it, give your laugh to it,give, when the gravelly sand takes you, your tears to the land. To love another is somethinglike prayer and can't be planned, you just fallinto its arms because your belief undoes your disbelief.”Pelvis with Distance reminds me why I’m a believer. What a beautiful, beautiful book.

Scott Brownlee Many an MFA student has dreamt up a "project"-based idea for a poetry collection only to see the initial momentum for the project wane or shift unexpectedly into another obsession or concern. In PELVIS WITH DISTANCE we see the thematically-linked poetry sequence brought to completion and operating at its finest: a blend of the personal (the poet's own life and imagination) and the historical (from the perspective of Georgia O'Keeffe and her NYC-based lover) that culminates in a sequence of poems that do as much to magnify the self as they do to question and compress it. If you have ever spent a significant amount of time in open, blank countryside and known the quiet and music such a contemplative space offers, you will immediately love this book. Even if you have not, you will still love it. Jacobs has an ear that keeps even the skeptical reading and an eye that matches O'Keeffe's in its deft artfulness.
