Max Brown This book is the true story of the home I grew up in as the oldest of 13 kids. When I was eight years old, my folks became foster parents. Some kids stayed for a day or two, but many lived in our home for weeks, months or longer. Over 20 years, nearly 100 kids came to live in our home. At times, it was stressful with 16 - 20 people living there with lots of different needs, ages, backgrounds and experience.I'll never forget the dozens of times when either my mom or dad would wake me up in the middle of the night to quickly help make beds for a sibling group that would arrive shortly based on a call that my folks had just received telling them that a police car full of kids was on the way to our home. Sadly, foster kids often get pulled out of violent situations in the middle of the night. The law enforcement officers who work to get the kids out of these situations would often grab any clothes they could find and stuff them quickly into a paper sack. Meanwhile the confused kids sat crying in police cars waiting to be taken, along with this paper sack of clothes, to our home. Scared and exhausted, these kids would understandably come in completely confused and afraid. We would sit with them for long periods of time and my mom would often just rock them in her arms for hours and hours as she softly hummed a tune to soothe their pain.Needless to say, we learned a lot growing up in our home. It was a place of safety and love. It was a place of respect and caring. It was a place where we were taught to think bigger than ourselves in both word and deed.My parents have never sought recognition for the life of sacrifice they chose to live for so many others -- even the word sacrifice would be objectionable to them because they didn't -- and don't today -- consider it a sacrifice to love and serve others. For them, service is a duty and honor – it is their life purpose. More importantly, these are real kids who suffered a lot, but they don’t want to be labeled – they want to be loved. To this end, my folks wouldn’t want the focus to be on them, but rather the focus should be on these amazing and resilient kids who came into our home and taught us all a lot along the way.Gratefully, my Aunt Brenda, the author of this book, has brought this story to life. It deserves to be shared with the world, and I’m grateful for the way she captures some of those moments growing up in our home. I hope it brings you hope and courage to serve, care and love the people around you.Just imagine what it would be like if we simply treated each other better. May we all be engaged in causes bigger than ourselves!

I love hearing about real people who make a difference in the world. It may not have made newspaper front lines, but to the children they helped, loved and protected it made all the difference! This is a heartwarming book. The author did an amazing job, I'd love to see more of her work!
