The back cover of my paperback copy of this edition with illustrations mentions XII books, but the table of contents only lists Book I through Book X. According to an authoritative annotated text with modernized spellings, the first edition of Paradise Lost in 1667 had only ten books, but a second edition had broken up some of the episodes. The beginning of Book VII is the same for both.Much of the confusion about how day and night are split by motion of parts of the universe, which God was laughing at ways men contrived to understand what was going on when it got dark at night and light returned in the morning, is explained to Adam by an angel that Eve did not listen to, because such ponderous matter were more puittant that human understanding can appreciate. John Milton had the right to describe anything puittant if he wanted to, and the muses that kept feeding him that word made me curious about how weaklings would react. Milton changed some punctuation in the second edition in order to adjust pauses between phrases that did not have the kind of sense connections that more modern punctuation might imply.Only the picture on the cover is in color. It is in black and white on page 182, at the end of one of the books. The serpent has a fruit from the tree that Eve also bites. One of the pictures shows demons falling from heaven when the Almighty wins the battle that sets the scene in hell for the beginning of this poem.
