1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A states right justice By Jean “Life of Roger Brooke Taney: Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court” by Bernard Christian Steiner was published in 1922. I read this as an e-book and I found a formatting error quite annoying. The footnotes are scattered throughout the page and the numerical numbers of the index are large size in the text. I am unsure how they put the book into digital format whether by scanning or transcribing but it does make reading the book difficult. The writing style is old fashion and I think some of the sentences were a direct quote from even much older biographies or documents and the style even more old fashion.Roger Brook Taney (1877-1864) was the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1836-1864) He was the eleventh United States Attorney General (1831-1833) and was also Secretary of the Treasury from 1833 -1834. Taney was a Jacksonian Democrat; he was a believer in State-Rights but also of the Union. Taney was slaveholder who manumitted his slaves. Taney was the first Catholic appointed to the Supreme Court. Taney was born in Maryland the second son of seven children. According to tradition of the time the plantation would go to the eldest son. Therefore Taney father told him to get an education to be able to support himself. Taney graduated from Dickinson College. He read the law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. He quickly became one of Maryland’s most promising lawyers. Taney’s law partner was Francis Scott Keyes, and he married Keyes sister. He was elected a State Senator in 1815 serving until 1821. He was elected Attorney General of Maryland but resigned in 1831 to become acting U. S. Secretary of war. He was then appointed as Attorney General of the United States by President Jackson. As A.G. he supported South Carolina’s law prohibiting Free Blacks from entering the State. When he became Secretary of the Treasury he ordered an end to the deposit of Federal money in the Second Bank of the United States, an act which killed the institution. As Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court he followed President Jackson’s philosophy of favoring the power of the State. This is the opposite of John Marshall who had supported a broad role for the federal government in areas of economic regulation. The Taney Court presided over the case of slaves who had taken the Spanish Schooner Amistad. The attorney representing the slaves was John Quincy Adams. Adams won. In Prigg v Pennsylvania 1842 the Taney Court imposed a positive duty on states to enforce federal fugitive slave laws. Taney argued constitutional guarantee of slave holders rights to ownership. The most famous case heard by the Taney Court was the Dred Scott v Sanford case (1857). Taney decision is considered to have indirectly been a cause of the Civil war. He declared the 1820 Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and the pro-slavery ruling that deemed blacks were not citizens of the United States nor could be.President Jackson appointed 6 justices to the Supreme Court and 18 Judges to the United States District Courts. In 1863 the number of Justices of the Supreme Court was increased to nine. In his role as Chief Justice Taney administered the Oath of Office to President Abraham Lincoln. According to the author at the end of Taney’s life he was despised by both the North and the South. He died October 13, 1864 at the age of 87. He had served 28 years as the 5th Chief Justice. Steiner points out that modern legal scholars have tended to state Taney was an outstanding jurist and a competent judicial administrator but the Dred Scott decision and his standing on slavery has tainted his legacy. There is a statue of Taney standing on the grounds of the Maryland State House. You can visit the “Taney Place” in Adelina, Calvert County Maryland. I watched the Little League World Series games from Williamsport Pa. (August 2014) and noted the team from Philadelphia was called Taney. They named the team from the street in front of the park they played baseball in. The street was named after Roger Taney. I also noted that most of the players were black and the team that knocked them out of running for the championship was an all black team from Chicago. I would also guess that most of the kids and their parents are citizens of the United States. I read this as an e-book via my Kindle app for my iPad.

Great addition to the Office bookshelf with something for everyone By Paul S I enjoyed this book's relaxed style and the brisk but effective coverage of key Excel areas. Topics range from entering formulas through to an excellent section on the complex topic of macros. There are plenty of practical examples which can be applied to real-world problems, together with frank discussions of the pitfalls you may come across. There are also comprehensive lists of functions and shortcut keys, and tips which the author has gathered over a lifetime of working with Excel.Make sure you register the book (steps are on a page almost at the back of the book, after the index) to get access to all the accompanying data files - particularly useful for the Pivot Table and Power Map sections.Overall, a very good reference book on the latest version of Microsoft Excel.

It has really help me through setting up networking my office laser jet printer to two computers and changing power settings, just to mention a few items. I would rate myself as a intermediate PC user since the 80's, but wanted to expand my knowledge and do more with all my machines. So I would recommend this book to someone who is somewhat knowledgeable already and wants to go to the next level. I usually buy the "For Dummies " books but this time I didn't, I'm sure those books would have been good, but this one is really worth the cost.

I won't like a poem just because it's "well written"; it has to make me feel something or think something that's meaningful to me. I feel like each of these poems expressed something that was quite meaningful to the author and I connected to that. A few of them really got to me emotionally and I loved that.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lovelovelove By paula Amazing little book of poetry! Very easy to understand and very easy to read. It is a little rollercoaster filled with love and despair!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Why do I like the "hate" poems better? By Dean K Miller One voice, two sides of the coin and some great poetry here. I found more of the "hate" poems carrying more passion, though hate is pretty strong to describe the poems here. Mr. Haskett's utilizes several forms with his prose and manages them well. There is no love/hate relationship here . . . I enjoyed this collection of work.

Learn the joy of potty training in just a weekend

Today only, get this Amazon book for just $0.99 for a limited time. Regularly priced at $5.99. Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet or Kindle device. All parents world over see potty training as an important milestone for their children and often become very concerned if it doesn't all go smoothly. Therefore The Joy of Potty Training comes at the most appropriate time to parents to help them know how to do it joyfully. For toddlers, it is something new to learn since it is one of the steps from being a baby to fitting in with what other people want. Most children are not ready to get to control their poo and pee (bowels and bladder) until they are at least two years old and some not until they are three. Often boys are late than girls. Control over poo may happen before or after the control over pee. To be ready to use the toilet or potty, a child needs to be able to know when he has to do pee or poo before he does it. He should also hold on for a short time so that he can get to the potty or the toilet and understand that he is meant to use the toilet or potty. • The first sign that this will be happening soon may be that he tells you when he is doing pee or poo, or when he has just done it. When he gets praise for telling you, he will soon be ready to move on to the next step of telling you before he does it. • Other signs of readiness are: taking an interest in others using the toilet and pulling at wet and dirty nappies • Telling you that his nappy is wet • Telling you that he doesn’t want to wear nappies anymore. Be prepared to wait until your child is ready. Most toilet training problems can be avoided if you don’t start too early. Don’t try and set a date by which you want your child to be toilet trained, before the new baby arrives which almost a sure recipe for failure is. It works best if there is no pressure and you toilet train your child at the pace he can manage. I am convinced that this book will go a long way in demystifying the challenges that come with potty training. Let’s get started… Download your copy today! Take action right away by downloading this book for a limited time discount of only $0.99! Hurry Up!! The information is basically what I already knew and there was a lot of parts that repeated what was already said. Most of it was common sense stuff that I think the average person would already know.

Jacqueline Woodson, one of today's finest writers, tells the moving story of her childhood in mesmerizing verse.

Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world. Woodson's eloquent poetry also reflects the joy of finding her voice through writing stories, despite the fact that she struggled with reading as a child. Her love of stories inspired her and stayed with her, creating the first sparks of the gifted writer she was to become.

Jacqueline Woodson's BROWN GIRL DREAMING is a literary gift By Cyrus Webb Less than one day. That is how long it took me to take the journey with Jacqueline Woodson through her book BROWN GIRL DREAMING---and boy was it worth every moment.Woodson has a way of telling a story through words that is a true gift. Whether utilzing the simplicity of the Haiku like HOW TO LISTEN (Even the silence * has a story to tell you. * Just listen. Listen) or sharing a narrative about God, Family or Herself, we are able to get snapshots into what helped her become the woman she is today. There are the clever poems about her identity and wanting an afro as well as the realization of wanting to be a writer and how some might see that as not wanting enough. There are the poems I can definitely connect with about Faith and God and wanting to please Him---and not wanting to leave others that we love behind.Throughout it all there is hope: something that is not always easy to hold on to when you are going through challenges both inside and outside yourself---but it is definitely necessary if you are going to survive.Brimming with nostalgia and a real grasp of the power of words, BROWN GIRL DREAMING is the realization of a dream for readers.

For that matter, what does a fictionalized memoir written with a child audience in mind owe its readers? Kids come into public libraries every day asking for biographies and autobiographies. They’re assigned them with the teacher's intent, one assumes, of placing them in the shoes of those people who found their way, or their voice, or their purpose in life. Maybe there’s a hope that by reading about such people the kids will see that life has purpose. That even the most high and lofty historical celebrity started out small. Yet to my mind, a memoir is of little use to child readers if it doesn’t spend a significant fraction of its time talking about the subject when they themselves were young. To pick up brown girl dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is to pick up the world’s best example of precisely how to write a fictionalized memoir. Sharp when it needs to be sharp, funny when it needs to be funny, and a book that can relate to so many other works of children’s literature, Woodson takes her own life and lays it out in such a way that child readers will both relate to it and interpret it through the lens of history itself. It may be history, but this is one character that will give kids the understanding that nothing in life is a given. Sometimes, as hokey as it sounds, it really does come down to your dreams. Her father wanted to name her “Jack” after himself. Never mind that today, let alone 1963 Columbus, Ohio, you wouldn’t dream of naming a baby girl that way. Maybe her mother writing “Jacqueline” on her birth certificate was one of the hundreds of reasons her parents would eventually split apart. Or maybe it was her mother’s yearning for her childhood home in South Carolina that did it. Whatever the case, when Jackie was one-years-old her mother took her and her two older siblings to the South to live with their grandparents once and for all. Though it was segregated and times were violent, Jackie loved the place. Even when her mother left town to look for work in New York City, she kept on loving it. Later, her mother picked up her family and moved them to Brooklyn and Jackie had to learn the ways of city living versus country living. What’s more, with her talented older siblings and adorable baby brother, she needed to find out what made her special. Told in gentle verse and memory, Jacqueline Woodson expertly recounts her own story and her own journey against a backdrop of America’s civil rights movement. This is the birth of a writer told from a child’s perspective. You might ask why we are referring to this book as a work of historical fiction, when clearly the memoir is based in fact. Recently I was reading a piece in The New Yorker on the novelist Edward St. Aubyn. St. Aubyn found the best way to recount his own childhood was through the lens of fiction. Says the man, “I wanted the freedom and the sublimatory power of writing a novel . . . And I wanted to write in the tradition which had impressed me the most.” Certainly there’s a much greater focus on what it means to be a work of nonfiction for kids in this day and age. Where in the past something like the Childhood of Famous Americans series could get away with murder, pondering what one famous person thought or felt at a given time, these days we hold children’s nonfiction to a much higher standard. Books like Vaunda Micheaux Nelson’s No Crystal Stair, for example, must be called “fiction” for all that they are based on real people and real events. Woodson’s personal memoir is, for all intents and purposes, strictly factual but because there are times when she uses dialogue to flesh out the characters and scenes the book ends up in the fiction section of the library and bookstore. Like St. Aubyn, Woodson is most comfortable when she has the most freedom as an author, not to be hemmed in by a strict structural analysis of what did or did not occur in the past. She has, in a sense then, mastered the art of the fictionalized memoir in a children’s book format.Because of course in fiction you can give your life a form and a function. You can look back and give it purpose, something nonfiction can do but with significantly less freedom. There is a moment in Jackie’s story when you get a distinct sense of her life turning a corner. In the section “grown folks’ stories” she recounts hearing the tales of the old people then telling them back to her sister and brother in the night. “Retelling each story. / Making up what I didn’t understand / or missed when voices dropped too low . . . / Then I let the stories live / inside my head, again and again / until the real world fades back / into cricket lullabies / and my own dreams.” If ever you wanted a “birth of a writer” sequence in a book, this would be it.At its heart, that’s really what brown girl dreaming is about. It’s the story of a girl finding her voice and her purpose. If there’s a theme to children’s literature this year it is in the relationship between stories and lies. Jonathan Auxier’s The Night Gardener and Margi Preus’s West of the Moon both spend a great deal of time examining the relationship between the two. Now brown girl dreaming joins with them. When Jackie’s mother tells her daughter that “If you lie . . . one day you’ll steal” the child cannot reconcile the two. “It’s hard to understand how one leads to the other, / how stories could ever / make us criminals.” It’s her mother that equates storytelling with lying, even as her uncle encourages her to keep making up stories. As it is, I can think of no better explanation of how writers work then the central conundrum Jackie is forced to face on her own. “It’s hard to understand / the way my brain works – so different / from everybody around me. / How each new story / I’m told becomes a thing / that happens, / in some other way / to me . . . !”The choice to make the book a verse novel made sense in the context of Ms. Woodson’s other novels. Verse novels are at their best when they justify their form. A verse novel that’s written in verse simply because it’s the easiest way to tell a long story in a simple format often isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Fortunately, in the case of Ms. Woodson the choice makes infinite sense. Young Jackie is enamored of words and their meanings. The book isn’t told in the first person, but when we consider that she is both subject and author then it’s natural to suspect that the verse best shows the lens through which Jackie, the child, sees the world. It doesn’t hurt matters any that the descriptive passages have the distinct feeling of poems to them. Individual lines are lovely in and of themselves, of course. Lines like “the heat of summer / could melt the mouth / so southerners stayed quiet.” Or later a bit of reflection on the Bible. “Even Salome intrigues us, her wish for a man’s head / on a platter – who could want this and live / to tell the story of that wanting?” But full-page written portions really do have the feel of poems. Like you could pluck them out of the book and display them and they'd stand on their own, out of context. The section labeled “ribbons” for example felt like pure poetry, even as it relayed facts. As Woodson writes, “When we hang them on the line to dry, we hope / they’ll blow away in the night breeze / but they don’t. Come morning, they’re right where / we left them / gently moving in the cool air, eager to anchor us / to childhood.” And so we get a beautiful mixing of verse and truth and fiction and memoir at once.It was while reading the book that I got the distinct sense that this was far more than a personal story. The best memoirs, fictionalized or otherwise, are the ones that go beyond their immediate subjects and speak to something greater than themselves. Ostensibly, brown girl dreaming is just the tale of one girl’s journey from the South to the North and how her perceptions of race and self changed during that time. But the deeper you get into the book the more you realize that what you are reading is a kind of touchstone for other children’s books about the African-American experience in America. Turn to page eight and a reference to the Woodsons connections to Thomas Woodson of Chillicothe leads you directly to Jefferson’s Sons by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. Page 32 and the trip from North to South and the deep and abiding love for the place evokes The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963. Page 259 and the appearance of The Jackson Five and their Afros relates beautifully to Rita Williams-Garcia’s P.S. Be Eleven. Page 297 and a reference to slaves in New York City conjures up Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. Even Jackie's friend Maria has a story that ties in nicely to Sonia Manzano’s The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano. I even saw threads from Woodson’s past connect to her own books. Her difficulty reading but love of words conjures up Locomotion. Visiting her uncle in jail makes me think of Visiting Day as well as After Tupac and D Foster. And, of course, her personal history brings to mind her Newbery Honor winning picture book Show Way (which, should you wish to do brown girl dreaming in a book club, would make an ideal companion piece). It’s not just other books either. Writers are advised to write what they know and that their family stories are their history. But when Woodson writes her history she’s broadening her scope. Under her watch her family’s history is America’s history. Woodson’s book manages to tie-in so many moments in African-American history that kids should know about. Segregation, marches, Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. One thing I really appreciated about the book was that it also looked at aspects of some African-American life that I’ve just never seen represented in children’s literature before. Can you honestly name me any other books for kids where the children are Jehovah’s Witnesses? Aside from Tom Angleberger’s The Qwikpick Papers I’m drawing a blank. The flaws? Well it gets off to a slow start. The first pages didn’t immediately grab me, and I have to hope that if there are any kids out there who read the same way that I do, with my immature 10-year-old brain, that they’ll stick with it. Once the family moves to the South everything definitely picks up. The only other objection I had was that I wanted to know so much more about Jackie’s family after the story had ended. In her Author’s Note she mentions meeting her father again years later. What were the circumstances behind that meeting? Why did it happen? And what did Dell and Hope and Roman go on to do with their lives? Clearly a sequel needs to happen. I don’t think I’m alone in thinking this.I’m just going to get grandiose on you here and say that reading this is basically akin to reading a young person’s version of Song of Solomon. It’s America and its racial history. It’s deeply personal, recounting the journey of one girl towards her eventual vocation and voice. It’s a fictionalized memoir that nonetheless tells greater truths than most of our nonfiction works for kids. It is, to put it plainly, a small work of art. Everyone who reads it will get something different out of it. Everyone who reads it will remember some small detail that spoke to them personally. It’s the book adults will wish they’d read as kids. It’s the book that hundreds of thousands of kids will read and continue to read for decades upon decades upon decades. It’s Woodson’s history and our own. It is amazing. For ages 9-12.

47 of 49 people found the following review helpful. this book is BEAUTIFUL. It is deeply personal By Emily I don't even know why I'm reviewing this, when it is so clear everyone has the same review: this book is BEAUTIFUL. It is deeply personal, yet eloquent. The poetry is succinct, yet paints a vivid picture of each scene. If I could write, I wish it was like this. Woodson is able to communicate her memories in a way that appeals to both kids and adults: it's clear, emotional, and deeply moving. It incorporates national history with personal history in a fascinating way. I love it. I love this book and I want everyone to read it.On a completely biased standpoint, this era of American history is what I studied in college, so anything about that time is always a favorite of mine. But this...even more so. This is a perfect combination of my love of history and middle-grade books. So it's a winner in my mind. But on a totally non-biased standpoint, it very well may be the next Newbery. Complex poetry, historical insight, a personal memoir...this book will last through history. This is what our grandkids will be reading in school. I truly think so. Now go. Go and read it. And step into the shoes of an African American girl in the era of change.

If you like world history and modern concepts and issues-this book is for you. This book was a real eye-opener in my case. It taught me so many things about the 'definitions' of slavery and how it's still being enacted and most importantly-how it's being fought against. I really learned a lot from the case studies and when I originally bought the book-it wasn't something I was expecting but it was still a great feature! This book gets five stars from me!

These sonnets sing about a love of the landscape of New Hampshire and the people who rejoice in common in its sense of place. At times, this earthly paradise is daunting, formidable and even threatening. Yet the skiing is divine. The mountains are sublime. The purity of the lakes is pristine. The small towns charm. The seacoast, though brief, connects to the vast Atlantic. This modest poetic book refreshes the sonnet itself with songs and beautiful full-color images of landscapes inspired by the land and people who love New Hampshire. "A delight to read. The poetry herein evokes images not only of New Hampshire, but of where I call home. Here is a celebration of nature and the common man, the lakes and towns, the streams and villages, the people." - Goodreads "Elegant meditations." - Terry Richard Bazes, Novelist, Author of "Goldsmith's Return" "His poetry is meant to be read aloud, savored and reread." - Virginia Marciano "An existential, romantic world of sentience." - John H. Sibley, Author of "Being and Homelessness: Notes from an Underground Artist""Lentz succeeds in bringing out the emotions associated with these places and times, letting the reader drench in the beauty, the loneliness, the joy." - Leonard Seet, Novelist and Author of "The Spiritual Life" "Expressed so clearly, the tender feelings of his sonnets are eternal." - Krishna Bhatt, Novelist and Author of "The Royal Enigma""The use of a seven-beat line, which blends the beat of the classic ballad to the rhythms of the sonnet, is a nice innovation." - Christopher Bernard, Poet and Author of "In the American Night"

Sonnets on the Common Man: New Hampshire Verse, by David B. Lentz

Review "Enraptured. Masterful writing. Timeless." -- Roxana Bowgen, Author of "Agapanthus Rising""One hears in the sonnets the sensibility of a contemporary avatar of Wallace Stevens. Lentz helps us find true north in ourselves. This is the most important connection art can make." - Eric Sonnenschein, Author of "Ad Nomad""The language in 'Sonnets' is by turns playful and profound, and the reader is continually impressed with both." - Chuck Crabbe, Author of "As a Thief in the Night""These are the bread and water of life." - Bruce McLaren, Author of "The Plain of Dead Cities""These poems become something akin to beacons of hope." -- Gary Anderson, Novelist and Author of "Best of All Possible Worlds"

From the Author Ambitiously, I seek to refresh the ancient sonnet form with little songs of love inspired by the landscape and common people who love New Hampshire.     These sonnets praise the everyday heroism of the common man by which in a universal sense I intend to include each gender in this lovely, little corner of humanity. The simple language of these sonnets stays true to the original aspirations of the poetic form in transparency and resonance.   I seek to connect you to the tender beauty of the land and the people living in New Hampshire. Earnestly, I invite you to a sentimental journey as if we were touring together at our leisure and sharing views from granite summits of the rich meaning that the landscape invokes all around us.  We share common ground with those whom we love and the landscape becomes sacred because they inhabit it. Are these illuminations of life, invoked by a common sense of place, not your joy and even your legacy to those who follow? Among you, who are mindful, isn't the conspiracy of the universe to the success of your process of enlightenment simply the way that life is meant to unfold?   We share in common the human condition and generously may have been blessed to experience the wilderness with its profound beauty and the serenity of elusive solitude. The journey, that we disclose, may enrich us all our lives. May these ragged and humble sonnets serve to connect us in our common ground.

From the Inside Flap The Resonance of Honeyed SummerElizabethan Sonnet Sequence abab, cdcd, efef, ggSynchronous in honeyed summer sings a choir of tremulous birch leaves, A sweet breeze surges south from the mountains to cool down the farm. To a white picket fence, among the honeybees, a steadfast garden cleaves, After blind disregard by a town plow, mended again from winter harm. A sensual scent of new mown meadow, the clash of croquet mallet to ball, A ricochet sings a tin din of two wickets and a knock into a winning stake. By the barn, night owls howl, by day gleeful wee hummingbirds enthrall. The mirth of dipping children as wakes of droning motorboats lap a lake. Bluebirds have woven a love nest in a stilted, rough-hewn, wooden house. By a stonewall wild berries grow swollen from green to a misty blue hue. As we ride bikes beside a hayfield, we rouse the flight of a russet grouse. At dawn a doe and fawn cross our lawn leaving hoof prints upon the dew. In long lemonade days, rocking and sipping on the porch, in our defense, We're in awe of honeyed summertime and the harmony of its resonance.             +              +              +

Over 50 classical and Lentzian sonnets, beautifully enhanced by artistic photographs, scrupulously adhere to form, thanks to Lentz' ability to successfully relate conventional elements to the total form of each individual poem. Presented in sections--Common Ground, The Seasons, Living in the Sticks, Villages, Northern Enlightenment, Lakes and Bays, and White Mountains--the sonnets take readers on a virtual tour of place and simple, often prosaic experiences, a visit in imagination which produces an appetite for booking a flight so one may savor New Hampshire's ambience for oneself. This book honors the ordinary man and the beauty inherent in commonplace scenes and human emotions.Go with Lentz to his American Eden. Ice skate with him in moonlight on a cold, clear winter night. Explore an ancient barn and imagine its story. Go fishing with the poet's father. Holding your breath, ski perilous Tuckerman's Ravine--you're Hans Castorp on a magic mountain. Accept the onus of raking leaves while chill winds bully you. Sigh over the nuisance of doing drudgerous chores. There is so much quiet humor in many of these sonnets. Chuckle over the metaphor of black flies as the "tiny bicuspids" plaguing mankind and slap ubiquitous mosquitoes "whining in the dead of blessed night." Chuckle some more over the stones of a stone wall being referred to as "former fellows of the underground."Still, nothing is all sweetness and light--even in New Hampshire. There are snakes in Lentz' eden. A "Disarming Walk into Wilderness" takes us where the gunfire of hunters who "find amusement in shooting to kill humble creatures." breaches "the quiet of paradise". In "Pasquaney" Lentz accompanies Thoreau through once pristine waters which today "wind fans and pipe lines salivate to invade". And at "Crawford Notch" an abandoned ski train and trestle mar the Arcadian wilderness. "The Old Homestead" laments perennial wars. In the title poem "The Common Man", questioning what "a reticent God" could have been thinking to combine so many disparate souls unable to really know or understand one another, Lentz shakes his head over our separateness from one another. The eternal question: "Is Everyman fated as an island unto himself 'til his last bright day goes by?" ends the sonnet.Sonnets on a Common Man is a fine collection teeming with intelligent thought expressed in wonderfully poetic language. I enjoyed reading it and recommend it highly.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a beautiful book length sequence By Corey Mesler Who writes sonnet sequences these days? Who could? David Lentz could and has, a beautiful book length sequence, a hymn to his home state of New Hampshire, in which he manages to use sense of place as a metaphor for an entire existence, an entire way of life, and for capital L, Life. The reason the book succeeds on such a high level is Lentz’s lyricism and his wry humor and his grounding in simple things: moonlight, trees, ice, homestead, lakes and mountains. Here is a poet who’s been paying attention and his eye is evident on every page. He sees the magic under the everyday, which is a gift, but an even finer one is his ability to pass his sight and insight on to his readers. In Sonnets on the Common Man there are poems of stillness, poems of grace, poems of “Whirling dervishes, spinning, gliding, leaping in sprightly pirouettes.” And, perhaps most powerful, the poem of the titular ‘common man,’ of whom Lentz says, “What was a reticent God thinking and what in the world could be his plan,/To cast us together like this, bewildered and baffled, in such a vexing daze?” What does it all add up to? A love of the deep mystery of living, of nature, of Man, and an ability to limn it in verse as musical as birds or brooks. Lentz is a writer of rare acuity and rarer courage. I’d follow him anywhere.

Marriage is good, sweet, satisfying, encouraging, strengthening, fulfilling, liberating, exploratory, sustaining, motivating, procreative and endowing. These are the reasons why marriage is God's choice gift to mankind. What then is the purpose of marriage? God made marriage for companionship, for sexual fulfillment and for procreation. As a result of these the family is set up in a loving, secure home where happy, disciplined and responsible children are nurtured. The family is very vital, being the structural and functional unit of the human society. Any damage or attack brought upon the family proves destabilizing and fatalistic to human society. Marriage has faced various challenges from time immemorial. These challenges are described as storms in this book. Storms could be terrifying, destabilizing and destructive. With the abiding presence of God in a couple's life and their mutual faith in God, they would face challenges together and victory is won over every storm or problem which confront their marriage. Storms arise through personal failures in life. They do arise from external sources such as human-made confrontations. Confrontations could be spiritual, physical, emotional, social, or physiological. In most cases spiritual problems or storms come from the devil, also called Satan. He is the main enemy of human beings. Satan attacks human minds through introduction of doubts, fears, anxieties, sicknesses, diseases and incitation of violence. When this is focused upon marriage or any human relationship, chaos or disaster occurs. The aim of the devil is to make each one of us to doubt God, disobey Him and thereby get exposed and live out of the will of God. This makes us vulnerable to attacks. Such attacks could destroy the marriage and also human lives. A man and his woman should confront any challenge jointly with the grace of God. When a couple know God and submit to Him, they receive wisdom and strength to overcome the enemy. When they resist Satan, he flees from them(James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9). In order to have a continual victory over the devil and evil thoughts, God must take central place in a person's life. This can happen when a person receives Jesus as Saviour and Lord. The Bible states that Jesus Christ died for our sins on the cross, was buried, and rose again from the dead. If you confess Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you shall be saved. Anyone who trusts in Jesus will not be put to shame. Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10: 9-13). My friend, if you have not received Jesus into your life, this is an opportune time to do so. Call upon him now. Invite him to come into your life to save you. The church and her leadership are facing similar challenges on the subject of marriage. Church, society and government are pulling in different directions on marriage. The modern-day youths are not sure what to do. The church is already tainted with worldly practice. If the church does not clean up herself, she would not be suitably positioned to help the society. That hindrance places the marriage institution at risk. Consequently, the family is at risk. Ultimately, human society is gravely at risk. The right husband or wife could only be found by being one yourself. No match is absolutely perfect. Get married to your friend; and you get placed on the pathway to a happy married life. Who is a friend? Someone who is trustworthy. Someone who can be relied upon in times of emergencies or troubles is a friend. Someone who would not mislead you is a friend. Someone who would never take advantage of you, nor cheat on you is a friend. As you and your spouse develop, each one of you watchfully helps his or her spouse to develop into the desired perfection. This growth and development is not achieved in one year, but over decades of mutual loving and selfless commitment. This advice in this book is practical, biblical and balanced.

The Song of Songs is a profoundly mysterious poem. It is both deeply spiritual and dangerously sensual. It has puzzled and delighted readers and scholars for hundreds of years, being translated more than any other part of the Bible. Christopher Kelly takes a new approach, uncovering a miraculously complex structure in the Song. Understanding this structure is the key to the Song's lock, opening the door on a true love story. It is the searing narrative of one vulnerable girl's devotion and her sexual and spiritual growth into a woman. Her forbidden passion for the boy, her 'king,' forces her to arrange a series of secret trysts that grow riskier and riskier as the poem progresses. The Song has the timeless qualities of Romeo and Juliet, with all the excitement and jeopardy such love entails. It also manages to speak to modern issues such as sex, spirituality and feminism. Enjoy the Song again for the first time.

Compelling, sumptuous and sexy...and yes its the Bible By Anil Bhardwaj I tore through this book in just a few hours reading passages over and over again. I will read it again and again finding new inspiration each time I am sure. It now sits where it will remain for a very long time: just at my bedside.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A beautifully explained translation. By Swimmer The introduction, fully as long as the poem itself, makes this book. It provides not only a much greater understanding of the poem, but also gives you a window into the translator's mind as he does his work. Captivating.

I've read so many by other authors, and none can compare. Status Single is funny, and definitely a page-turner. I read this book in one sitting, and I'm hoping that this isn't the last book I'll read by Daniela Sainato!!

Daniela has an uncanny way of sharing her experiences and perspective on dating in a way that is both extremely witty and brilliant. Status Single is the perfect balance of horrific dating experiences, hilarity, and the hope and optimism every single girl looking for true love should hold onto. In today's day and age the dating game has changed drastically from our parents or grandparents day. And more often than not we come home from a date thinking, "Is it me? Did I unknowingly and unintentionally put some vibe out there that made him think I would be into that?" You then proceed to go over EVERY detail in your head, share your experience with all your friends so that they can reassure you it's of course, not you. If you have ever questioned yourself in a similar manner, this book is a must read!!! It is miraculously funny and incredibly insightful at the same time. There were times as I was reading I was laughing so hard I had to set the book down and just crack up. After I was finished, my single world was brighter and more interesting. Reading Status Single is like having a conversation with a really good, hilarious and wise friend. It completely delivers, you will not understand singledom the same way again, nor will you be able to see a pickle ever again without thinking of this book and laughing. THIS BOOK IS A GEM!

Her writing is so clear and honest. It comes right from her heart and you, reader, immediately identifies with her! She has a simple and straightforward style, almost like you are sitting across from her having coffee discussing last nights date. It's entertaining, it's funny, it's informative. Anyone who has dated as an adult will identify, man or woman. What I found so entertaining was how she shared your inner thoughts with us, you felt like you were right there, could just picture the puzzled looks on her face, feel her uncomfortableness in certain situations and her justified anger at a number of the "normal" guys. Really well done! This is a delight and I hightly recommend it.
