This is a warm, human story of three generations of Herseys who spanned the decades between Appomattox and the end of the millennium. Like all Southerners, they had to reinvent themselves and their culture. And like everyone else, they had to cope with the violence and uncertainty of the era. Morgan dreamed of proving himself by living at the edge, as his brothers had in war, but Ruby insisted that he put such dreams on hold until the last baby turned five. His questions about suffering were never fully answered. His youngest son Benjamin, born 1899, grew up innocent and ill prepared for the unrelenting evil that would threaten him and his family before mid-century. And Ben´s son, Stephen, would spend his life in search of answers to Job´s ancient question: why do the innocent suffer. At the millennium´s turn, he stands at the graves of those who gave him life and at last finds understanding.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. After the war By A Customer After Appomattox Southern culture had to be reinvented. There was resistance in the form of white supremacy, but individuals and families had to find a way to recover from the multiple tragedies. The farm had to be tended. Morgan Hersey was too young to fight for the Confederacy, but he grew up fast when the war ended and his father died. He had lost a brother at Gettysburg and another crippled at Olustee. There was no time or energy for anything but the farm, but when it was done and he had started his own family, he wanted to get away, to begin again someplace else, where his life could be claimed his own. He chose Fletcher on the Suwannee. A beautifully written story.
