As a quirky, loving, and headstrong little girl forced to contend with her mother’s violent outbursts and gentle, but transient stepfather, Kelly Muller emerged from her early years with unconventional survival skills. Bill, her older brother, had long before made it his mission to educate and refine her by employing his strongest gifts: sarcasm and wit. His intellectual nature and awkwardness made him a target for bullies who quickly found the tables turned when confronted head-on by Kelly. Each time their parents found themselves homeless, the siblings lived with their nurturing, nonconformist grandmother who inspired them to use their respective gifts to survive and thrive. As Bill and Kelly neared adolescence, their mother faced even greater financial hardship causing her to arrange a meeting with their natural father. Initially thrilled, the kids happily embarked on a trip to their father’s home for a three-week stay that they hoped would be only the beginning of a new and better life. Instead, it exposed them to unconscionable hypocrisy and the worst of mankind. Their mother grieved upon learning the news, but there was little else she could do. After brother and sister reached their early teens, their mother’s episodic rage intensified. She made verbal assault an art in butchery, ripping more flesh from bone in each attack. Bill and Kelly would diverge and come to rely upon their own unique gifts to cope—and even cross moral boundaries in an attempt to survive.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. the author has grown into an intelligent, witty By KP Pollyanna Lily is a captivating read. It recounts the story of a young girl who survived and rose above the tragedy of a childhood that crept beyond dysfunction. While enduring unspeakable physical and emotional abuse, and at the same time battling the torture of OCD and later facing the loss of her beloved brother, she found it within herself to persevere. Clearly, the author has grown into an intelligent, witty, compassionate adult who today enjoys a happy, healthy relationship with her husband and children. Her inspiring story is a testament that adversity can be overcome. I highly recommend this book, not only to victims of childhood abuse, but to all who are desperately searching for hope, no matter the nature of the struggle.

Little did I know what was in store for me! This book was so captivating from the start, that I could barely put it down. The author opened up and let us into her memories....some tragic.....some funny.....some infuriating. But at the end, her determination to turn all of those experience into a positive life with the love of her husband and children. What a wonderful ending to a powerful story! I indeed rejoiced!

The story of this young girl who endured tremendous hardships is both incredible for it's honesty and devastating in it's delivery. The moments of effortless levity and impossible cruelty speak to the author's constant struggle to find solace in a world where she has otherwise been tormented. Her fight for control of her life where it has been stripped away is everything from frustrating to suspenseful to heartbreaking. Her fight is still ongoing. Before I start a book I always have some sort of expectations, but I never expected this book would become as important to me as rapidly as it did. I encourage anyone who has been fighting to find purpose in this world to find refuge in this memoir and to remember that you are not alone in your struggle. Thank you for your bravery, Kelly.
