Cook, Stevenson, Lawrence, Mungo Park, Darwin, Robert Byron, Theroux, Chatwin—books that transport the reader to far-flung preserves to wander and observe the majesty, agony, originality, and manifest mysteries of the human and natural world. Except here the ground explored is the vast and unknowable territory of love that endures beyond boundaries of sexual attraction, of distance, time, beyond disease, even beyond death. The physical geography is unnervingly familiar. Downstate Illinois. Chicago. Michigan. An American street. A well-appointed parlor. A chic café. And yet the poet’s fine eye and delicate ear give words, give aching reality, to the place of longing and attachment and meaning that for me, perhaps for many, remain most veiled, and until now, most impenetrable. Love, Friendship and Grief: A Poet Speaks from the Heart, Straight to Our Hearts By Amazon Customer Full disclosure, I have been a friend of the poet since childhood, and also knew Mike back in the day.This slim book of poems stunned me with its emotional depth, and its intimate examination of love, friendship and grief. I just got my copy, and stayed up way too late last night, savoring the experience. I may come back to this review to try to better articulate why and how much I love this book, but will say for now that this is the best work Priscilla has done, and her words will echo in my head for a long time.

Knowing how deeply she felt forher cherished friend, we are never manipulated to care. The result is that we DO care. In ahostile time she takes us into the hostility of disease and comforts us all.
