This is a deceptively simple craft. Embroidery has been used through the ages to embellish and beautify garments, religious vestments, and home décor items. This book is all about the basic stitches used for hand embroidery. If you have ever browsed through an embroidery book, especially the vintage variety, it can be a little overwhelming when trying to make sense of the different types of stitches the patterns might require. Some of the stitches may seem too challenging or perhaps laborious, but fear not, hand embroidery stitches are fun, and with practice, can become quite easy.

Embroidery is a relaxing hobby for me, that is why I would like to learn the basics. This book has given me more than enough preliminaries that will assist me in this endeavor. I am able to learn the basic stitches like the running, the straight, the French knots, the split, and so much more. The attractive photos also made this book very encouraging.

Love, Friendship and Grief: A Poet Speaks from the Heart, Straight to Our Hearts By Amazon Customer Full disclosure, I have been a friend of the poet since childhood, and also knew Mike back in the day.This slim book of poems stunned me with its emotional depth, and its intimate examination of love, friendship and grief. I just got my copy, and stayed up way too late last night, savoring the experience. I may come back to this review to try to better articulate why and how much I love this book, but will say for now that this is the best work Priscilla has done, and her words will echo in my head for a long time.

About the Author Ahmatjan Osman, born in 1964, is among the foremost Uyghur poets of his generation. He grew up in Urumchi, the capital and the largest city of East Turkistan. Osman writes in both Uyghur and Arabic, and he has also translated the work of numerous poets into Uyghur, such as Octavio Paz, Paul Celan, Fernando Pessoa, and Adonis. He is recognized as one of the founders and leading lights of the New Poetry movement that emerged in Uyghur literary circles in the 1980s. Holzman In a time when so many humans out of dire need due to horrific circumstances are fleeing one physical place for another; “home” becomes an abyss, a perpetual flux, much like the displaced, misplaced, or place itself. This book will take you by the hand and guide you to a place that glimpses these notions in a unique and different way. It honestly searches and cares for the vulnerable beings of this world that find themselves in these circumstances, not failing them like so many systems and institutions do today. These poems are subversive without surrendering to exclusion or boxing individuals in. The poetry of Ahmatjan Osman is an invisible hope that guides the reader throughout its lines and words. Never did a reader expect such modern words to create such an arresting ancientness and welcoming. Can a homogenous white Caucasian North American really resonate and capture this book? Can he or she glimpse into the world of exile? Yes. And there is something strong, declarative and inclusive in Ahmatjan Osman’s following line:“Refugee water in all of us.”

Land of Loud Noises and Vacant Stares: Poems of War and Healing, by Peter M Bourret

About the Author Born in New York City, the proud father of two sons, has lived in Tucson for over 60 years; he attended twelve years of Catholic school, graduating from Salpointe Catholic in 1965. He served with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division as an 81mm mortarman in Vietnam during 1967 and 1968. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1971 and received his Masters Degree at the U of A in 1974; he taught English for 18 years, 17 of them at Sahuaro High School. Currently retired, he is in the process of writing his memoir, has written a soon-to-be published novel and has written a 3rd book of poetry, which will be available later in 2015. He has traveled extensively, including 2 return trips to Vietnam in 1991 and 1999. During the Bosnian War in 1993, he brought humanitarian aid to Bosnian refugees. He is a charter member of Detachment 1344 of the Marine Corps League and is a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America. Currently, he volunteers at the VA, working with veterans who are experiencing PTSD symptoms; also, as a volunteer with Agape Hospice in Tucson, he focuses on the veteran population. He has been a crisis counselor with Divorce Recovery of Tucson. He was the subject of Strands of Barbed Wire, a documentary about his 1st return trip to Vietnam in 1991 and also was involved in the making of Vietnam Across America, a documentary about PTSD, produced by his son Jeremy Bourret. Peter Bourret has been a guest speaker for the past 25 years in libraries and in high school English and American History classes. He won 1st place for “Alone with it on Veterans Day” in the personal experience category, which he presented at the 2014 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. "War: a memoir" was published online during the summer of 2014 by The Writers’ Circle, Inc. @ www.riwriterscircle.com . The Physics of War: Poems of War and Healing, his 1st book of poetry, was published on January 2015; Snowflakes from the Other Side of the Universe, his 3rd book of poetry, will be published later in the spring of 2015. Denham Clement, an accomplished artist and fellow Marine who served as an officer in Vietnam during 1968 and 1969, lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His "Vietnam Elegy", which graces the covers of Land of Loud Noises and Vacant Stares, won best of show at the 2014 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in Milwaukee. Some of his works hang in permanent collections in museum in Albuquerque, Tucson, and San Francisco.

By Carolyn Kittle Just when I think Mr. Bourret couldn't get any better, he has written even more clear, insightful, honest, disturbing, and uniquely personal poems that deal with his Vietnam experience and the road to healing. Selection 14, "no rhyme or reason" explains the difficulty of trying to weave poetry out of horror. In Number 55, from his inner Marine, the author describes a fundamental ache for understanding and unconditional love.In this work, Peter Bourret has achieved his goal in Number 60: "...to roll down the canvas of my face/a landscape lost in time." Few writers are as capable of simultaneously shocking the sensibilities while educating and sensitizing the audience to the far-reaching human toll of war on its survivors. You will not be left without understanding about the profound effects of war on a survivor's psyche.Haunted by my own after-ache from Vietnam, I was taken along by Mr. Bourret into the jungle of this ultimate insult to his youth--this loss of innocence--and through his words I have traveled along on his continuing journey toward healing. About the Author Michael Martin’s first collection of poetry, Extended Remark: Poems From A Moravian Parking Lot, was published in 2015 by Portals Press (New Orleans). Poetry and fiction have appeared in Gargoyle, New Orleans Review, Booth Journal, Carolina Quarterly, Chattahoochee Review, & Berkeley Poetry Review, among many others. He co-founded the literary magazine, Hogtown Creek Review and for a decade lived in Holland where he was a feature writer with Amsterdam Weekly. In 2010 he edited the anthology, Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing from Harper’s Magazine. He is currently working on a second manuscript of poetry and writing a book with Dutch film director, Louis van Gasteren. He lives in North Carolina with his wife and two young boys.

The author has an extremely and touching story about a smurf that was simply amazing and well-written. This book will literally make you feel emotions, not just read words on a page.
