The mountains rise, tall and majestic, stretching into the skies and gracing the heavens--that place where God dwells. I pause from my play, a young preschooler, to take in the breathtaking view, and wonder if I would be closer to God if I were at the top of that mountain. I feel Him in the breezes, see His angels in the raindrops as they dance in the puddles. At least that is how I imagine it. My heart is captivated and I want to know Him, this God who paints the beautiful sunrise and draws the curtains of sunset...

I hear murmurings that my father has threatened to kill us--his family. He flies into a rage, cursing disobedience, declaring damnation on the offender... He offers religion without relationship, and it seems that the church affirms this teaching....

These two Gods—the one revealed in nature, who makes beautiful things and whispers in the breeze, and the angry god who threatens, yells and abuses—collide, head on, in my mind, soul and spirit. I am confused and troubled. I pray to God. I ignore Him. I reach for Him. I shut Him out. I cry in desperation. I scream against Him, inwardly. I long to be held and loved by Him. I cringe. I fear. I flee.

And always my heart wonders: Which God is real? Which one is safe? Which one will ultimately save me? Which one will condemn?

My soul is tormented in the night, as the shadows dance on the walls of my room. I am seven. I am lost. I lie awake, afraid, wondering.... I am thirteen... the shadows still strike fear... the creaking stairs terrorize my mind... nightmares torment my sleep... I have tried the God of wrath, and He has left me condemned and lonely. I am abused, neglected and alone. I shut down... become numb and feel nothing. I am determined that I will not suffer forever...

...the God of my childhood is lost in the pain and trauma of abuse and I am left to struggle.... caught in a tug of war Between 2 Gods...

Foreword by Boz Tchividjian, founder of G.R.A.C.E (Godly Response to Abused in the Christian Environment) and law professor at Liberty University School of Law, and grandson of Billy Graham.

Hamp Between 2 Gods is the well written true story of the author, born into a God filled world. She was also born into a family and community who distorted God, His Word, and the world , trying to force and punish children and adults into doing "what God wants" On the one hand, there is her intuitive childlike sense of beauty and love, and on the other is the immersion in a version of God and his relationships with his people which is angry, punishing, and legalistic. She hears of his love, but experiences the opposite, as the community and parents impose their generations of their view of God and life.Trudy's book portrays her confusion at being caught between her occasional sense of happiness, peace, and a loving God, and on the other hand, the distorted focus on God and what he wants from people that her parents both teach and live, using the community to support this system. . Thankfully, Trudy finds beauty in the world and kindness in a few people over the years, and is not entirely consumed by a distorted world. Her confusion leads her into many trials and errors, and finally into a balanced view of both God and her background. She tells her story in detail without explicit drama, and yet without hiding the abuse and violence. A good book for those who have been caught in, or those who work with people who have been imprisoned by a distorted religion of fear and punishment, It is a happy ending book, in that Trudy found her way out of the distortion and into the Light, and uses both book and her life work to lead others out also.

A good story, a heavy read By Faith Renault I already knew most of Trudy's story from following her blog for several years, but this is a good place to read it as a cohesive story. This book is honest and gives a small glimpse into the utter darkness that cripples so many plain people. If you've been abused, read it and find hope. If you know someone who has been abused, either sexually or spiritually, read it and understand so you can empathize and know how to love the people in your life. If you're Mennonite or Amish or Charity or Russian Mennonite or any other stripe of Anabaptist, READ IT and join the rest of us in repenting and in dispelling the shadow of darkness and sin that runs deep in our communities

Brilliantly and interestingly written By Becky Jenkinson Trudy has shared her heart...shared her pain ... and shared her healing, which is a lifetime process. Brilliantly and interestingly written, this book deserves recognition on a large scale. Trudy's story has a powerful potential of being therapeutic in the lives of other wounded souls. This is a story of redemption and resilience during what seemed to be hopeless situations. Her search for God is touching and full of grace and hope! this book needs to be read and shared.
