River Full of Bones delves under the water's surface to offer a glimpse of family history and social history. Time's insistence shows itself in what the backyard holds, what the river carries, and in the lives of young women who worked in the nineteenth century cotton mills. The author is indebted to the Lowell National Historical Park where she first stood listening to the looms roar, and to Lucy Larcom, Harriet Robinson, and others whose writings brought the period to life. The author was fortunate to have a family book that traced one ancestor back to the seventeenth century.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A powerful collection of poems By JazzSax These profound and lyrical poems are deeply moving. They draw on memory as well as a strong sense of place. Of special interest are the poems about mill workers in Massachusetts in the 19th century. Holly Guran's sensitivity to people and their complex situations creates a powerful collection of poems that build in intensity, taking us to surprising destinations. A love of nature is interwoven with portraits of family loved ones as well as the oppressed mill workers. Follow the trail along this river of poems and you will be enriched. (reviewer jkl)

It takes you to a world of truths that are beyond what's in front of us. Each poem starts out very modestly; gradually it becomes something much more than what it seemed at first. It expands and gently transports you to another place that is touching and honest. And the music of it is enchanting.

As someone was there occasionally for the instant emotions while they were happening, I can attest she gets them just right.(I received a copy of this book as a gift with no thought of a review by the giver).
