From the creator of Luther: Told with absolute veracity and unsparing candor, Heartland is the memoir of an isolated little boy and the brutish stepfather he couldn't help but love When Neil Cross was born, his mother suffered from severe postpartum depression and later admitted to trying to kill herself and her baby son. Then, when he was five, she "went out and didn't come back" leaving behind all her children and their heartbroken father. Two years later she returns and gains custody of Neil, taking him to live with her new partner, Derek Cross, who showers him with attention and love in a way that Neil has never known. Derek teaches him about music and books; he is patient but firm, and more reliable than Neil's mother. But as Neil grows older he realizes his stepfather is more complicated than he seems. For all his love, Derek is a manipulator, an adulterer, a racist, and a con man. And he is the father whom Neil now loves. With devastating honesty, Neil Cross explores the circumstances of this love-one of pleasant rewards but consequences too dire to predict.

Heartland: A Memoir, by Neil Cross

Review “The most disturbingly vivid fast-track into childhood’s unexpressed hugeness, that I have come across . . . Fiction cannot compete with this.” —The Age (Melbourne) “Moving and engrossing . . . Heartland is a tour de force.” —Daily Mail “Cross has given his own life story the shapeliness and ironic depth of fiction.” —The Sunday Times “A wonderful memoir . . . a great example of how to wrest real life into a work of art.” —The Guardian “Straight from the heart. Quite simply it cannot be faulted.” —The Big Issue “The way Cross puts the authorial boot in, tears shining in his eyes, is riveting.” —The Independent

About the Author Neil Cross (b. 1969) is a British novelist and screenwriter best known as the creator of the multiple-award-winning international hit BBC crime series Luther, starring Idris Elba, and the international hit horror movie Mama. The beginning of the book is better than the ending and there are some odd detours and byways that never get resolved or explained (such as the Mormon Church) but this is a well-written, compelling and horrifying look at what divorce does to kids.

Residual Issues By prisrob Many therapists suggest that a family full of rife and disharmony is one in which the parents might want to consider divorce. Perhaps that works for most people, but the children are always left with some residual issues. In Bristol, England in the 1970's, Neil Cross, at age five, found himself without a mother. One day she just got up and left. No explanations, his father was morose, but tried very hard to care for him and his sisters. Then dad met Margaret and she and her two boys came to live with them. Margaret made a lovely tea each night for dad,and her two sons, but not for Neil or his sisters. This was what life was like, no one really cared for him. And,then one day two years later, his mother reappeared, and took him to Scotland to live with her and his new father, Derek. For all intents and purposes, Derek was wonderful, caring and loving for awhile, a good provider. But it turns out he was a serial husband. Life for Neil was never easy. His mother was a lost soul hanging onto whatever man would have her. We follow Neil from age five to his teens. His two fathers never really knowing Neil, nor do they want to.Derek Cross is considered a monster by many. His actions, loving, but his belief systems are rotten. Racist, leaving his families as he wishes, moving on, and in his wake he leaves people falling apart, no longer believing in anything, nothing solid that is. But his memoir by Neil Cross, I believe, is an attempt to rid himself of his furies, and he does well. Not much to hang onto, but it seems Neil Cross has gone on and prospered.Recommended. prisrob 01-22-15

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lovely ready! By Andrew I haven't read poetry in a long time, and this was actually recommended by a friend... I'm glad I picked this up, as it was a very fun and entertaining read. Each poem has its own meaning which was very cool. Although, some did have some deep meanings where you'd have to think a little to understand, but overall it was great and nicely written book. I'd recommend this to anyone as it contains different poems with different emotions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poetry Lover By Donna duke I am a poetry lover and I was pleased to hear in Mike's poetry his love for poetry also. He crafts his words to tell a story or paint life as it is. We have all experienced life's pains, pitfalls, and blunders, as we relate to the feelings he expresses so well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A compelling compilation of poetry with vivid imagery from an author who truly knows his craft By E.A. Gray Having read this author’s prior book, Ghosts from Along the Way, I was compelled to purchase this compilation as well. After reading this work, I’ve concluded that the reason Mr. Powers is such an effective poet is because of hid adeptness at varying styles while never once diluting the power of the prose. In some ways, the material is like an onion; it’s only after you’ve peeled back each underlying layer that you can fully appreciate the skill of the artist. From the mellifluous flow of each syllabic verse to the use of anaphora, I was enthralled by the content that overflowed from this wonderful book. One of my favorites, They Come to Us in Dreams, bears the artists signature melancholy feeling that I’ve grown to enjoy. Also, as a fan of rhyme, The Piper was a Shelley style throwback that wove its story together with surgical precision while painting a palpable and vibrant picture. Here is an example:“Through vapor, green within its midstFootsteps tread like angry drumsThe pipes call forth with haunting chillThe honor bought by comrades killed”Such delectable lines and more are sprinkled throughout the pages, creating a landscape of imagery that is easy to succumb to for hours on end. So, for any others who love fine poetry that will paint vivid portraits in your head while heightening your senses in the process, this compilation will be a treasure.

This is a story about change. It's a story about a boy who was born into the Agricultural Society of the United States but early on in his life, he realized that the world that he was living in was rapidly disappearing and that he must seek his fortunes elsewhere. It is a story of adventure, of survival, and of adaption to this new world. Change in our lives is a given. It happens all of the time. You can count on it. One part of the change equation uncovered in this book is that the change which happens in our lives has its root cause in inventions and events that have previously occurred - inventions and events which most people aren't even aware of. The other part of the change equation that is uncovered in this book is the source or cause of the acceleration of change in the last 20 years. This acceleration of change is but another branch of the Industrial Revolution tree which started around AD 1650. But this time, the human part of the decision making process is being taken out of the equation. And because of this, I say that a tsunami wave of disruption has landed on our shores. It's a wave of disruption that will change us socially, destroy the family as our basic economic unit, change our educational system, our political system, and will destroy our churches.

Slaves of Our gods, by James R. Bupp PhD

About the Author I retired from IBM Endicott, NY in 1998 after twenty nine and a half years of service, and my wife and I moved to Canandaigua, NY, a small town in the heart of New York's Finger Lakes region. I took a part-time retail job with Chase-Pitkin, a home improvement store (owned by the Wegman family but now closed), and then after Chase-Pitkin closed, I took another part-time job at the Wegmans grocery store in Canandaigua. It was during these 11 years of part-time jobs that I began to really get to know people. I wrote a book titled, "The Last of the Family Farms", published in 2008. I wrote this book for my grandchildren so that they would know what it was like to have grown up on a family farm. When I was working part-time at Wegmans, I started to think about writing another book. During my time at IBM, my days were filled with meetings, preparation of IBM's famous fall and spring business plans, and with deadlines associated with shipments of parts. But since I am retired, I can let me mind drift a little. I observed people in all walks of life as they came to buy their groceries and I came to the conclusion that living in our society today is less satisfying than it used to be when I was growing up on the family farm. Indeed, the lifestyles of those folks who came into Wegmans to shop for their groceries seemed to be counterproductive to making a living, raising children, and really getting to know their families, friends, and neighbors. "Slaves of Our gods" is a serious book. It is a warning to to be prepared to live in a society where there are no morals, only machines that do our work and our thinking!

Best Ebook The &NOW AWARDS 3: The Best Innovative WritingFrom Milks, Megan (EDT)

This third volume of The &NOW AWARDS recognizes the hard-esthitting, most provocative, deadly serious, patently absurd, cutting-edge, avant-everything-and-nothing work from the years 2011 through 2013. The &NOW AWARDS series, edited by Davis Schneiderman, features writing as a contemporary art form—writing as it is practiced today by authors who conscious-ly treat their work as an art and as a practice explicitly aware of its own literary and extraliterary history—as much about its form and materials, language, as it is about its subject matter.

The &NOW Conference, moving from the University of Notre Dame (2004), Lake Forest College (2006), Chapman University (2008), the University at Buffalo (2009), the University of California, San Diego (2011), Sorbonne and Diderot in Paris (2012), and the University of California Boulder (2013), to CalArts (2015), sets the stage for this aesthetic, while The &NOW AWARDS features work from the wider world of innovative publishing and surveys the contemporary scene.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. if you're use to experimental fiction (for lack of a better term) or make it a habit of indulging work ... By Daniel Casey what makes writing 'innovative'? I suppose the response to this question is dependent upon what you have read & read. if you're use to experimental fiction (for lack of a better term) or make it a habit of indulging work current & recent MFAers, then I suppose this anthology will leave you feeling ordinary. if you're a consumer of mainstream fiction & just quirky enough NPR recommended work, then the work here might just be enough out of your comfort zone to provoke a black/white critique. insisting on these two categories is unfair and cliche.in this way, &NOW3 presses you. it moves you beyond the snark of cliche and it unfairly confronts you with your own process--of reading, of judgment, of taste.to be conventional, the gems here are Ji Yoon Lee, Daniela Olszewska, Diana George, Matt Bell, Kate Zambreno, Ted Pelton, & Matthew Cooperman/Aby Kaupang.there is also prose poems about Kesha, unreadable fonts that mimic computer code, scribbles, four page sentence, & endless formatting experiments.

I was pretty thrilled because all of the familiar names By Xian Xian This was received from the publisher for an honest reviewIt took me a really long time to read this, because what is it? An anthology. Not a short story collection, but a collection of authors and their stories. When I received this for review, I was pretty thrilled because all of the familiar names, one I've been wanting to read. There were at least two I knew and read already. And the rest were familiar names with work I never got my hands on yet. This whole anthology is dedicated to innovative writing, the most experimental of experimental writing. Some of them are brilliant, sometimes using imagery, and some of them fried my brain with their oddity, almost unreadable, but that's what this anthology is all about. It's all about using writing in ways you would never think of, thought of but feared the audience, or to purposely throw off the readers. Keep the writing for yourself and your soul and give the readers a hard time to own it.I will admit that I loved the poetry more than the stories in here. There were a select few stories that I loved enough to persuade me to check out their other works. There were some that disappointed me, the Dennis Cooper one, but this anthology mostly consists of samples of these authors works. What I really loved about this anthology is not only it's a variety of experiments, but it's diversity also. Writing from all backgrounds and walks of life. Words in different languages and formulas. Different genres ranging from non-fiction, various poetry forms, and hybrid stories that blur between non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Writing morphed by technology and coding to form more literary art. What's not to love in this anthology? I will admit that it was a bit tiring to read because of so much switching and non-linearity, because you know, it is an anthology, but it will definitely make you add new books to your Birthday/Christmas/Three Kings Day/Lunar Year wishlists.Authors I liked with works I want to buy/read:Lucas de LimaJi Yoon LeeLaTasha N. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Avant-Garde Smorgasbord By Samuel Moss I guess the unstated goal of any well written review is to either convince or dissuade the reader from picking up and reading the book under review. And while I’ll endeavor here to write something at least mildly engaging and standard review length I’ll just let you know off the bat that you probably don’t need to read this whole review. I say this because for this book, this anthology called &NOW 3, you will undoubtedly fall into two pretty polarized camps based on one sentence. Essentially it goes like this: If the sentence ‘This book is full of lots of different really weird stuff’ gives you the sort of excited jumpy feeling around your sternum and makes you want to run out and pick it up then just go ahead and get the anthology now. Don’t waste any time, just go out and pick it up and read it and revel in it. If you read that sentence and get a kind of ‘oh jeez’ sinking dragging sensation then I still think you should pick the anthology up (educate yourself) but I doubt anything I can say about the thing will convince you. These &NOW award anthologies (this being the third in the series and the second that I have read and reviewed) read like a directory for the US (and otherwise) avant-garde writing milieux. Many of the big names are represented (Cooper, Bell, Butler, Place et c.), there are a number of emerging and less well known names, as well as strong showing from some of the notable presses, and journals active including: Jaded Ibis, FC2, Noemi, The Collagist, Semiotext(e), Birkensnake, Ahsahta and so on. So not only is the &NOW anthology a great way for the reader to find new writers and works, it is a great resource for writers as well, in a way a compendium of potential markets, MFA programs, grants and awards to keep an eye on for future endeavors. Admittedly my tastes stray toward the more mundane prose presented here and yet I’ve consistently found a number of pieces that really grab me. I suppose this is sort of the situation with the &NOW awards: nearly everyone who reads it is going to find most of the pieces are outside their range of taste, but will inevitably stumble upon at least four or five new names that are really invigorating and exciting and totally novel and worth looking for. The &NOW2 anthology alone caused me to go out and find at least five books from authors I had not read before. The importance of this cannot be overstated. This being one of the more difficult aspects of reading in the avant scene is just finding the writers you might like in an area that can come off at times as impenetrable and intimidating. This is undoubtedly one of the anthology’s greatest strengths and crippling weaknesses: there is just so much here. It is an avalanche, a deluge a jungle of seventy plus authors/collaborations/anthologies and projects. It should be noted that all the pieces were published between 2011 and 2013 which means they are fairly new, but at this point a bit outside of the bleeding edge. This installation of the awards notably includes a solid showcase of marginalized writers in the form of selections from two anthologies: “I’ll Drown my Book: Conceptual writing by women.” And “Troubling the Line” a collection of trans and genderqueer writing. I’ve included a few entries on the pieces that really stood out to me. It should be noted that this is not a representative sample of the writing in this anthology, but just the pieces that stuck out to me. Amber Sparks and Robert Kloss’ “The Desert Places” Is a vast, biblical cosmic query, a rumbling, roiling conflagration of prose that cuts to the core. Margo Berdeshevsky’s “Square Black Key” Presents the life of a middle aged women through the objects she surrounds herself with and the memories and sensations that form her psyche. Anna Joy Springer’s “Variations on a F*cked up Theme: The Ruling Class Rules for Realism” An essay which is part polemic against realism, part meditation on US politics and a whole lot of other stuff. Fast paced, opinionated and vibrant. Marina Blitshteyn’s “Kaddish” A wordless poem, written out only in accents. What seems like just an interesting concept actually materializes into one of the best poems I have read in recent memory. Jayson Iwen’s “Three Polyvalent Poems” Three poems laid out in four blocks of four lines each. This provides (at least) three different ways to read each poem depending on how the lines are spliced together, each version providing a slightly different meaning, connotation, and amount of cohesion. Carina Finn & Stephanie Berger’s “Two Emoji Poems in Translation” Wherein a ‘poem’ is written entirely as a string of emojis by one author, then translated into English by the other author. The resulting poems are not gimmicky but clever, inventive and very engaging. Laura Zaylea’s “Using Basic Conjunctions: And, But, So, Or” Styled as a description and lesson on the use of the types of conjunctions with illustrations in a series of permutations on a scene of longing. This piece cleverly draws us into a story we are not expecting and mirrors the expectations, rules and infractions of relationships with the notions of literary rules. Janis Butler Holm from “Rabelaisian Play Station” Brilliant playful poems that pull every ounce of juice out of syllables and meter. While the words themselves tend to be playful or funny or meaningless the strict adherence to meter brings up notions of very serious classical poetry. Duriel Harris’ “No Dictionary of a Living Tongue” From the anthology “Troubling the Line” Simply powerful, jarring poems. James Tadd Adcox’ “Viola is Sitting on the Examination Table” Astute, muted, minimal realism. Johannes Helden’s “Elect” An interactive, dark prose piece using a computer as the medium. Alake Pilgrim’s “Blue Crabs” A stunning prose piece about an abusive uncle, crabbing, and the life of a girl growing up in Trinidad and the fallout of events in her childhood throughout her life. Tom Bradley’s “Family Romance” A strange well written prose piece with crazy monster illustrations. Lots of words play, talking about a family, a pathogen and the destruction of the Amalekites. Plus another fifty or so pieces. The &NOW3 awards. Pick it up, it’s really cool and I guarantee you will find something new, hidden and interesting.

First published in 2010 by Narrow House Books, the mis-eponymous collection of poetry by Adam Robinson is made available again here, unabridged and unchanged, and includes all the classics, like "I'm Going to Have SEX with these People," "Glenn Tipton" and "It's Down to Mom or CLAUDIIIIIIIIIINE." "Adam Robinson's mix of classical and mundane references imbues lines like “There would be a pronounced lack/ Of throwing Nerf balls to paralytics/ In the basement” with more meaning than they have any right to have. – Baltimore City Paper "This is one to drink milk in bed with." –HTMLGiant "This is a book of pristine openings and closings, preoccupied with structure, literary convention, popular and intellectual culture, biography, genre and identity. Somewhat skeptically, it marks out a testing ground for poetry. And poetry, confident in those sparkling titles and last lines, jumps into the ring" – Mairead Byrne, author of TALK POETRY

Agile Data Warehousing for the Enterprise: A Guide for Solution Architects and Project Leaders, by Ralph Hughes

Review

"Agile Data Warehousing, as outlined in Ralph’s multiple books, has transformed the way our BI team manages projects.  In just two years, we are delivering releases in iterations three times more frequently on five times the number of concurrent projects, while improving application quality and the enterprise nature of our solutions." --Mark Giesbrecht, Senior Manager, Business Intelligence, major Canadian railroad

"Agile Data Warehouse for the Enterprise is a must read for any data professional tasked with delivering enterprise reporting and analytics in the nimble, speed-to-value environment that we find ourselves today.  It marries agile methodology with data warehousing best practices to create a blueprint to deliver value fast." --Nik Green, Director of Business Intelligence for multi-billion dollar food retailer

"This comprehensive guide provides a solid and complete foundation for agile EDW development including revolutionary new paradigms.  I especially like the ‘out of the box’ thinking, practicality of the techniques, and the research and case studies backing up the validity of the proposed approaches.  Recommend reading for all DW/BI technical leaders." --Len Silverston, CEO of Universal Data Models and author of the Data Model Resource Book series

"If you’re still programming data warehouses by hand, you're wasting 90 percent of your time and money.  Ralph’s guide for project leaders not only outlines the automated, metadata-driven development we've been practicing for years in the Netherlands, but also links that practice to agile requirements, coding, and quality assurance.  It is a unique book, a must read." --Ronald Damhof, DW/BI Consultant to the Dutch Central Bank

"The industry has struggled to bring the mechanics and benefits of Agile to the data warehousing and business intelligence communities. Ralph’s works in this area is timely and important to assist in driving success within your enterprise and project teams. Following the guidance found in this book will help you deliver value at a rapid pace." --Tom Hammergren, President of Balanced Insight and author of Data Warehousing: Building the Corporate Knowledge Base

"Ralph has customized the agile development methodology for the unique needs of business intelligence.  My project teams were able to quickly understand and apply his approach without losing time to adapting generic Scrum techniques to the rigors of data integration and analytics." --Ron Lewis, program manager at a Fortune 1000 financial services company

"As a friend of Ralph and fellow Agile DW/BI author, I am very excited about this book. Ralph’s extensive research into what works; his hands-on application of those techniques; and his well-organized method of presenting information, are combined in this game changing book for data warehouse practitioners seeking greater agility." --Ken Collier PhD, author of Agile Analytics, Addison-Wesley, 2011

"This book presents a thorough approach to building quality into enterprise data warehouses, mitigating risk by applying proven models for testing, and detailing alternatives so that you can experiment to find the alternatives that work best for your team. These aren’t  mere off the cuff ideas, but proven techniques to overcoming the huge challenges of EDW by applying agile principles, illustrated with stories from the trenches." --Lisa Crispin, Co-Author of More Agile Testing: Learning Journeys for the Whole Team, and Agile Testing: A Practical Guide for Testers and Agile Teams

"“Ralph’s notion of ‘80/20 specifications’ for data warehousing projects really worked, saving our business partners the pain of doing an exhaustive requirements specification up-front.  This approach got the team developing the most important features first, letting the product owner fill in details on topics as each one came up during development." --Naveen Thalanki, Project Manager for a Fortune 500 company

"Agile Data Warehousing for the Enterprise is a “how to” book with innovative method and process components such as hyper data modeling and an iterative sub-release value cycle.  Ralph provides a clear outline of the concepts, methods, and frameworks you'll need to assemble a world-class BI/DW program of your own." --Hans Hultgren, author of Modeling the Agile Data Warehouse with Data Vault and BI/DW industry advisor

"One of TDWI’s most popular faculty members, Ralph packs this book with detailed direction and experience-driven insights about how to overcome the most challenging aspects of agile for business intelligence and data warehousing applications.  He has become an important thought leader for organizations seeking to increase the agility, quality, and ROI of their BI/DW programs." --David Stodder, Director of Research for Business Intelligence, The Data Warehousing Institute

"Ralph's book goes way beyond just agile programming-it illustrates an iterative approach to the full development life cycle and is particularly relevant to issues of data quality that we focus on at DAMA.  The hyper modeling techniques in particular will allow teams to avoid the death trap of producing big, risky application designs up-front before a project's requirements are fully known." -- Ken Dunn, President of DAMA’s Houston chapter

"Agile techniques and Ralph’s adaptations for enterprise data warehousing have dramatically improved our ability to understand business needs and to then plan, track, and deliver upon those needs for large and small projects. This book provides a thorough treatment of the vital leadership practices for agile projects including requirements, architecture, and quality assurance." -- Richard Tench, Manager, Information Delivery, major Canadian insurance company

From the always-important perspective of forward-thinking data project leadership, it closes the loop on agile data warehousing at enterprise scale. Books from others have introduced agile dimensional modeling, mapped agile terminology from application development to business intelligence, or defined new, agile enterprise data warehouse architecture in detail. However, this book, which is targeted to project leaders, describes, with sufficient detail for the target reader, how the most challenging, most agile-resistant pieces of data warehousing -- the data structure itself (data model), ETL coding, testing, and change management – are logically broken down into agile-sized, requirements-scoped chunks of business value while completely avoiding data silos, sustaining an enterprise-wide perspective, and as a big bonus, maximizing adaptability to future change and easy enhancement. Friend, you are not dreaming. Following this method, the scope-creep that inevitably followed traditional best practices, from agile requirements to the very non-agile big data-model design up front, becomes a thing of the past.HYPER NORMAL MODELS: Known to insiders as Data Vault, the methodology is aptly explained at the level of, if you will, the detail oriented project leader or enterprise architect (vs. a data modeler or engineer) seeking a deep immersion for assessment and implementation oversight. Accordingly, the book describes a cross section of architectural alternatives as the method has evolved in Europe, the U.S., and the land down-under. Among these pathways, two important ones that received less coverage than others in this work are Business Vault and Data Vault 2.0 (DV2).Business Vault, a layer just-downstream containing rules-based transformed data, either as views or tables, has continued to evolve, as it needed to, such that it actually does provide a nicely standardized method for querying the tables once they are loaded into Hyper Normal structure, either for direct querying or in order to subsequently load a data presentation layer. Those who found writing queries directly from a hyper normal model, and especially those getting started as data modelers or ETL engineers, will benefit greatly from learning more about Business Vault patterns.Data Vault 2.0 is an innovation in Data Vault, intended to move it from primarily a data modeling methodology into a more modern data warehouse logical architecture that supports increased data loading parallelization and a more loosely-coupled integration with Big Data, in which huge data velocity or volume demands an absolute minimum of target table dependencies. The book “Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0”, by Dan Linstedt and Michael Olschimke covers this innovation with the consistency, the detail, and the excellence that it deserves. However, in my view, it is THIS book by Hughes that provides that all important data project leadership perspective for a data project leadership framework, if you will. Readers of this book who are intrigued with DV2, and who want to succinct, powerful 'how to' on DV2, should look into Kent Graziano’s “Better Data Modeling: An Introduction to Agile Data Engineering Using Data Vault 2.0” (Kindle), which is a near-perfect complement to this one, guiding data modelers and engineers seeking detailed ‘how to’ on DV2 patterns. Moreover, this book I'm reviewing now has, in my view, the best top-down (project leadership framework) perspective to date on this exciting methodology. Hughes knows how to communicate and make it not just pallatable, but actually compelling.HYPER GENERAL MODELS: The author also provides a fine introduction to a methodology for transforming source data directly, running it through a commercial transformation engine, then essentially loading it into dimensions and facts -- a proprietary methodology that is described as being available only through a single business intelligence platform vendor. The method, as I read it, does not simply rely, as I had expected it might, on the clever use of well-known table-generalization, aka ‘Universal Data Model’ principles, with their generalized ‘sub-type / super-type’ tables that, as a very high level explanation, reduce the number of tables essentially by storing records of varying concepts in a single table. Notwithstanding the author’s solid coverage of the hyper-general concepts, his indication -- that the commercial platform that actually executes it leaves some of these logical layers of hyper-generalization away from view from designers using the product – leaves me a bit concerned. However, since I have not used the commercial platform, I will not comment on it further, except to say that this author’s explanation of this intriguing platform was excellent.Practitioners who fail to understand the insights offered in this book – instead sticking with either the old practice of big-enterprise-design-up-front, or the tactical (requirements driven) design, or no design approach of the inexperienced -- will find that their solutions are too slow to adapt to business change in modern times and will soon gather dust. Data warehouse project leaders who read this book and implement its guidance will know how to keep their solutions, careers, and teams dust-free. Recommended reading.

By Diana Collins "Agile" is a hot topic these days, but when it comes to data warehousing, being agile is easy to say, but hard to do. Data warehouse projects often get mired down in trying to answer every question that could possibly be asked, rather than answering the questions that are most critical to the business. Ralph makes a great case in this book for a more business value based approach and provides some solid evidence that traditional tool sets have failed to provide the flexibility required. His presentation of the “hyper generalization” approach is very compelling, both in terms of business value and time/cost savings. Nobody knows this area better than Ralph!

By Stephen Pace I've seen Ralph present this material in person at TDWI, and he's exactly right. 60% to 90% of the labor we currently invest in EDWs today could be eliminated through methods described in this book. I particularly liked this discussion of how alternative data modeling techniques can enable agile delivery methods, and I thought the "hyper generalization" approach he presented had particularly large potential for the data warehouse automation space. Recommend!

PDF Ebook Adoption Addiction Absolution: An Adopted Boy's Life: Hijacked as recounted by his mother, by Lorraine Wheeler

This is a story about an adoption and the journey both the adoptee and his adoptive parents experienced as they tried to cope with a battery of challenges that eventually overwhelmed best efforts and intentions. Adoptees face a myriad of issues as they grow and develop. These include abandonment, attachment, bonding, loss, lack of a historical narrative and more. Adoptive parents are challenged by their own denial, the adoptees disguised anger, the adoptees acting out behaviors and their own unfinished business of not producing biological children. Birthmothers never forget they gave birth; and they, too, are caught in the cycle of loss and grief as they often relinquish their children against their will. This adoption triad is challenged to promote normalcy in a complex situation. My story will focus on how meeting these challenges becomes even more difficult when addiction, dramatic losses and catastrophic disease combine to create obstacles for the adoptee as he tries to grow and develop a sense of self and mature into an adult who can function in society. The question of nature versus nurture will be discussed with an authentic appraisal of this controversial issue. Parental responses such as tough love, addressing learning disabilities, special schools, addiction treatments and finally reunion with a biological family will be discussed as we accompany a boy on his journey to manhood and identity formation. Using the unique perspective of one family you will learn what seemed to work and what did not. Adoption changes families and you will discover the emotional complexity one family experienced as they traveled this difficult road. In this fast paced era of internet reunions, the increasing frequency of international adoptions, this story will provide a valuable tool for adoptive parents and adoptees trying to cope and feeling they may have nowhere to turn. Understanding that you are not alone and others have traveled this rocky path may help alleviate some of the stresses and strains. You will also be introduced to the most amazing therapeutic dog. You will never forget him. Lorraine Wheeler, R.N., M.S.N is a clinical nurse specialist with a clinical focus on mental health and has practiced nursing for over forty years. Her practice focused on women’s issues, group therapy, multi-cultural issues, stress management education and consultation. She has taught nursing, published in the nursing literature and also worked in hospice care. She is now retired and enjoying two beautiful grandchildren.

Battaglia Lorraine Wheeler takes us on a wild roller coaster journey through her and her husband’s long years of parenting their adopted son. This is truly a caring, loving, and in some ways tragic, real-life, educational read whether you are an adoptive parent or not.

The story demonstrates the unconditional love given by adoptive parents By John Rak The story demonstrates the unconditional love given by adoptive parents, yet is continually rejected by the adoptee. The adoptee can not come to terms with his inner feelings of rejection by his birth parents and acts it out with those who love him the most. Once the spiral of addiction begins there was no coming back no matter how much the adoptive parents reached out. I saw an underlying love for the adoptive parents by the adoptee but he was never able to change his early established need to separate himself as if he was not good enough. What I read I have experienced to a much lesser degree as an adoptive parent. All adoptive parents or those thinking of adoption should read this story and make an educated decision to adopt. Know the risks and be willing to seek help. But not all children will be this difficult and most will bring joy to your family.I love my two daughters dearly and I sincerely believe they love me back.

I think at some level, many parents can relate to some of the difficulties that the Wheelers went through, raising a son from a young age through early adulthood. Told with such honesty, heartfelt, and at times heart-breaking incidences, it deals with the trials and tribulations that this family dealt with in trying to help their son. Adoption, as I understand it, often reaches down to such emotional issues, as it brought up in this book. It really isn't a "downer", though from what I've stated previously, it is one of hope, and coming to terms with many societal issues. By the way, I do like that the author included the dog's side of the story. A book you will remember for a LONG time.
