This is a 5 star read. It captured and held her attention, the pictures are bright and go along with the story and she loved them. As a mother of a young child this book has made me smile when my daughter is now asking for a bath and for me to read lightens my heart. The authors amazing rhymes were fun to read and I look forward to reading more.

The standard approach to the legal foundations of corporate governance is based on the view that corporate law promotes separation of ownership and control by protecting non-controlling shareholders from expropriation. This book takes a broader perspective by showing that investor protection is a necessary, but not sufficient, legal condition for the efficient separation of ownership and control. Supporting the control powers of managers or controlling shareholders is as important as protecting investors from the abuse of these powers.

Rethinking Corporate Governance reappraises the existing framework for the economic analysis of corporate law based on three categories of private benefits of control. Some of these benefits are not necessarily bad for corporate governance. The areas of law mainly affecting private benefits of control – including the distribution of corporate powers, self-dealing, and takeover regulation – are analyzed in five jurisdictions, namely the US, the UK, Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Not only does this approach to corporate law explain separation of ownership and control better than just investor protection; it also suggests that the law can improve the efficiency of corporate governance by allowing non-controlling shareholders to be less powerful.

"Emma thought that she was finally going to get to start living her life, not that she regretted the last twenty-three years. Her choice to raise her son on her own had been an easy one to make, but as any parent can tell you, having a child means sacrifice. Working two (sometimes three) jobs, shopping thrift stores, and spending weekends clapping at Little League tournaments are all fine memories, but Emma had never really had a life of her own. Wrenching herself out of one bad relationship only to fall into another, romance had not been on her radar for quite a while. Suddenly, it seemed, she looked up and she was forty-something, the parent of an adult, self-sufficient young man away at university, and her life was all her own. Now what? Young enough to start fresh, old enough, hopefully, to know which mistakes to avoid. Being alone didn't have to mean being lonely, and she was fine with that. What she didn't count on was the way fate can throw a twist into the best laid plans in the form of dark strangers, dilapidated, old houses, and deadly diseases. If she thought the first half of her life had been the rough, her limits were about to be tested. She would also discover how true love can heal what may seem broken."

How to go from a theoretical to a practical, hands-on understanding of Clojure By Sergio De Simone In my own experience, while Clojure for the Brave and True is a great book to get started, and The Joy of Clojure is perfect to get to know all the details about using the language (and that you might want to read again and again), Clojure Recipes is the best way to really practice with the language -- once you have moved past the first steps -- in some useful, entertaining and playful ways. Mostly, this comes down to this book being a collection of interesting projects that can be studied in a relatively short time. Say, e.g., that you have understood the basic details of macro writing, basic ideas, quoting and such, and you are looking for some guided way to go deeper and play with those concepts. Well, Clojure Recipes includes two projects where you write macros to improve debugging and to extend the compiler, and what is more important, both projects are sufficiently complex to require a certain intellectual effort, still doable in your spare time. That's great, as it provides exactly the kind of knowledge you need to move from a theoretical understanding of the language to a practical one -- which is what matters in the end. Depending on your focus or preferences, you could prefer digging into other aspects of the language, and you will have plenty of projects to choose from, although perhaps you will not find all the chapters equally interesting. All in all, a very good book.

I hadn't thought of using zippers to solve that problem. I also liked the macro chapters. Wrapping up code in an asynchronous block using a macro I had written made me think about my code differently.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Practical and helpful in day to day work By Nathalie Trinh I enjoyed the realtime data feeds with Pedestal and ClojureScript. The other part that was good was all the projects I could use in my work day to day - they were well thought out - and well explained.

22 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Mixes psychology and Christianity to help frustrated older singles. By Erik Olson It appears that a new wave of Christian books targeting singles is coming on the market. "The Singlehood Phenomenon" is one for older singles who are still unmarried for a variety of dysfunctional reasons. As a Christian singleton that recently turned forty, I certainly fit the demographic. I'm always up for a book that will 1) help me be a better candidate for marriage, or 2) enable me to be more content as a single. This one helps with the first point, but falls short on the second.Tom and Beverly Rodgers have been Christian relationship counselors for twenty-six years. They have identified "ten brutally honest reasons people aren't getting married," and have created "The Soul Healing Love Model" to help correct these barriers to matrimony. This is done by confronting and healing wounds, often from childhood, that prevent healthy relationships. Their goal is for everyone who desires a spouse to deal with their hang-ups so they can meet a "soul mate" and get married. The overarching theme of "The Singlehood Phenomenon" is that we must conquer our relational issues in Christ before a healthy dating relationship (not to mention marriage) is feasible. Each obstacle to finding one's soul mate gets its own chapter, such as "Wanting the Perfect Mate," "Fear of Getting Hurt," and "Concern That the Marriage Will Fail." To provide context, the authors use an example of someone who demonstrates the issue and is working it out through the Soul Healing Love Model. I found myself identifying with many of the protagonists, since at one time or another I've wrestled with many of their issues (and still do, more or less). Overall, I enjoyed "The Singlehood Phenomenon." It challenged me to continue confronting my cynical attitudes and pet dysfunctions in the area of dating and marriage. However, I struggled with some aspects of "The Soul Healing Love Model." First, the authors' use of the loaded term "soul mate" is somewhat disconcerting. At least they reveal a reasonable definition early on in Chapter 2, a key aspect being their acknowledgement that a soul mate is "formed as well as found (p. 32)." Second, my skeptical button is always pushed by healing methodologies with cute names. They're almost as numerous as denominations, and their differences (and similarities) are just as frustrating. Third, having one issue is bad enough. But what if you exhibit multiple "brutally honest reasons?" Based on the trials each person went through with a single hang-up, dealing with a bunch would probably prevent marriage until retirement age. For that reason, I would've liked a more integrated approach to healing. Finally, I wanted the authors' insights into healthy and contented singlehood, especially after my recent brush with middle age - and because we often have to live with unfulfilled desires. Unfortunately, you'll need to look elsewhere for that information (Luci Swindoll, anyone?).Ultimately, this book gives the impression that it's probably best to marry early in life, if only to avoid winding up alone with all this nasty baggage. If your dating life has become a cautionary tale to younger singles (ahem), then the mixture of psychology and Christianity in "The Singlehood Phenomenon" may provide some help. I suggest supplementing this book with "Boundaries in Dating," by Drs. Cloud and Townsend. For a more spiritual focus on singleness, get "Loves Me, Loves Me Not," by Laura Smit - one of the best I've read on dealing with singleness in Christ.

42 of 55 people found the following review helpful. the authors see singlehood as a crime scene By Bella DePaulo I became curious about this book because, according to Amazon, people who buy my book on singles, SINGLED OUT, often buy this book as well. The two books could hardly be more different.Although Rodgers and Rodgers say on p. 9 that they do not think there is anything wrong with being single, everything else in the book suggests quite the opposite. You can judge this book by the cover. Look at it: Yellow crime scene tape with words like "cynicism" and "perfectionism" is wrapped around their topic, "The Singlehood Phenomenon." Look at the subtitle: "10 Brutally Honest Reasons People Aren't Getting Married." Authors Rodgers and Rodgers know why you are single - there's something wrong with you. This is a singles-bashing book.In contrast, SINGLED OUT shows, using social science data, that most of the claims that stereotype and stigmatize people are grossly exaggerated or just plain wrong. The Rodgers book accepts the stereotypes at face value. For example, the Rodgers book claims that single men "want to stay little boys who play with their toys" (p. 86). People who stay single, the Rodgers book maintains, will "grow old alone" (p. 162). Rodgers and Rodgers also believe that the effects of divorce on children are "profound, if not traumatic" (p. 82). The authors claim that single people are loners who are also self-centered (p. 84).There are 89 million American adults who are unmarried. Of course, SINGLED OUT acknowledges, some of them really are immature or selfish, and some children of divorced parents really are traumatized. But most are not. SINGLED OUT also shows, drawing from social science data, that people who get married do not generally become happier, less selfish, or more giving than they were when they were single. And children of single parents are not doomed.Although there is no forewarning of this in the title, Rodgers and Rodgers practice Christian counseling, and they promise in the introduction to give "practical and biblical ways" of overcoming your reasons for being single. The "practical" reasons are at the end of each chapter. For example: "Pray that the Lord will give you His perspective on marriage. Trust Him to do it and He will" (p. 94). Drawing from Christian writings about men and women, the authors also make statements such as "God designed man to be the leader" (p. 91). In contrast, when SINGLED OUT mentions religion, it is to ask questions such as whether single people are treated as respectfully as married people in their places of worship.I disagree with almost all of this Rodgers and Rodgers book, but I was not bored by it. The stories about various single people are interesting. But the authors' insistence that single people are more flawed than married people, and that by getting married, they will become better people, is unsupported by science. Moreover, the Rodgers book stigmatizes single people and creates unrealistic expectations about marriage. SINGLED OUT does neither of these things.

By Anthony Centore Ph.D. A brief read, The Singlehood Phenomenon suggests 10 reasons why attractive and seemingly available Americans are single (31% of the US population was unmarried in 2004. That's up from 10%, in 1970). To illustrate the 10 reasons, the text is peppered with vignettes of unmarried persons with various problem issues.Sally the Fitness Instructor scares away men.Don the Pastor attracts needy women.Rachel the twice-Divorcee is a people pleaser. These stock characters add life to the authors' points, but fall short of portraying the complex personalities and compelling stories of real people. Another weakness of the work is that the content overall is somewhat dulled, having been mostly borrowed from general counseling knowledge and popular self-help books of the past. Incorporating more applicable research findings would have made for more compelling arguments. Nonetheless, this book has merit in that it reviews a fresh issue in an otherwise saturated market of relationship self-help. And, while most self-help prescribes a behavioral 1-2-3, seasoned therapists Beverly and Tom Rodgers guide the reader to overcome problem issues, past pains, and unhelpful interpersonal patterns in new ways. For one, they beseech the reader to look inward--to unpack his or her emotional baggage before sabotaging another relationship. Persons interested in the topic of singleness should buy the book. It is worth reading and the authors include a money-back guarantee: If you're not satisfied you can tear out the title page and mail it to NavPress for a full refund.

I knew I needed to be there for my kid, but I was having a hard time coping myself and didn't know where to start. The author provided me insight into what was going though my son's mind. She gave me some ideas that allowed me to come up with some strategies to help him process our loss. This was an invaluable book that I would recommend to any family going through any type of loss.

The manner in which the "grieving process" is presented provides adults with information and understanding that will enable them to guide children through this process. Losing a loved one is never easy but being empowered by knowledge and armed with compassion will certainly ease the path.

Not only is Graham Peterson unlucky in his choice of careers, he's also been terrible with women throughout his adult life. That changes when he meets Alison on a work night out. Unfortunately for Graham, however, things change so drastically that within a month of dating Alison, he gets the news that he's about to become a father for the first time.

The Diary of an Expectant Father charts the months leading up to what should be the happiest day of a young couple's life, but with a relationship so new and a career so bad, can Graham keep everything together for the sake of his unborn child?

With all the pitfalls and worries of an expectant father charted, this book is for all those who have been through pregnancy or just want to know how a man deals with all these things internally.

Expectant Father is the first in a series of diaries by Graham Peterson, who sometimes thinks he's writing to an alien warlord from the future. The next in the series, The Diary of a Hapless Father: Months 1-3, charts those first three terrifying months of parenthood.

Didn't Quite Click For Me By zagain As a current expectant father, I noticed this book on Amazon and thought it would be a great read given my current situation. I realized from the description that it was more of a fictional account than an actual diary and was written in a tongue-in-cheek style. The work is structured in diary format with fairly regular entries throughout the course of a 9 month period focusing on the life of Graham Peterson (I'm guessing a fictitious version of the real author) and his girlfriend Allison. Graham works in a local restaurant in something of a dead-end job for a difficult manager and Allison is a nurse. The book covers some of what one might find along the course of pregnancy, although it's very much in the extreme with respect to what one may come across (and is geared more towards the UK in many of its references). Unfortunately, the humor just isn't very strong and much of it revolves around the absurd situation or case (such as what one may find in the antics of South Park characters, but without the cleverness that often goes along with them) – I can't honestly recall a single moment that prompted a chuckle. In addition, the characters just aren't terribly likable. Graham is 28 years of age at the time of the conception and has never held anything more than a very basic job (basically what would translate to minimum wage jobs in the US). In this story, he reports to an overbearing manager who he constantly complains about – yet, he seems to consistently be late for work; provide little notice for time off; and finds random excuses for why he can't come in to work (such as feeling overwhelmed after driving Allison to a doctor's appointment). While the boss's antics are often unjustified, it's easy to see how she may not his biggest fan given his juvenile approach to the job. Similarly, Allison is also not presented in the best light. When first taking the pregnancy test to confirm her suspicions, she does so by urinating inside of a public photo booth; later after finding out she is pregnant, she gets completely drunk and shows up at Graham's apartment; and seems to also constantly find a reason to stay out of work. I find it odd that a professional nurse would be both so careless with drinking while pregnant and so woefully unaware of what to expect during pregnancy. Certainly the characters are written in a way so as to explore the humorous possibilities for a couple that is woefully unprepared for parenthood, but overall, the lack of likability and the fact that the humor typically falls flat lead me to give this 2 stars.

MEMORIES By Vickie Woodard The author tells the story of a surprise pregnancy between two unmarried people in England who have been dating for less than a month. Throughout this time the father-to-be, who works in the food service industry, also suffers at the hands of an unfair (think cruel) manager. The mother-to-be is either dealing with the world's worst morning sickness/restless legs/chronic fatigue or she is playing this for all it's worth. During the pregnancy the diary paints a picture of a woman under constant duress so of course she can't go to work.I find the woman's role a little difficult to swallow, but then I sailed through three pregnancies without a single day of morning sickness. My mother had to be hospitalized and fed intravenously for her first pregnancy, me.When I was pregnant my husband wound up in the hospital-with kidney stones, one for the first child, one for the second and three or four the third time around. This book does remind me of some of the questions we had: will we be able to stretch our budget; what about names and are the childbirth classes worth it?Bill and I were married long before our first pregnancy and each pregnancy was planned. Those two things alone kept us from going as crazy as the two main characters in this book occasionally do. We weren't prepared for our first child to come three weeks early or for my breast milk to give me a concretebosom. Thank God my roommate was an experienced breastfeeding mother. She told me to run the water in the shower as hot as I could stand it and direct the spray to my breasts. She was right; I was able to express enough milk to soften my breasts so my little one could nurse. It's most interesting that this book is just the first in a series. It's just such a short book. Surely it should have carried us through delivery. When I got to the final page I felt somewhat cheated.

This book was recommended by a male friend, who's had kids (I haven't) and who told me I'd love it, despite these two biological facts. And I did.The book made me wince, cringe, laugh and (nearly) cry. It's funny throughout, it rattles along at a good pace and I found myself warming to the poor, desperate main character as his world changed before him. It's refreshing to read a 'man's view' of this subject. The best comparative book I can think of is War & Piste by Alex Thomas, because despite the very different themes & backdrops (W&P is about a young woman doing a ski season), they have similar styles: smart, witty, light-hearted but not trying too hard to be funny. Recommended for men, women, parents & non-parents alike!
