Jacobs I believe this is a book all women should read. This book has really helped me understand my husband in a way I never thought to. Paul Mott's writing style is easy to understand yet to the point. He has, through many years of research and working with other men, put together this awesome book in why men sometimes act the way they do or even say the things they do without realizing the effects. As I read through the pages filled with the experiences of each man that has joined Paul Mott with his research, I noticed more and more of what my husband must go through in silence and how I may be adding to his frustration or even hurtful feelings without me knowing it. Now as I journeyed along with these men through part of their lives I can now change my perspective and rather support my husband in the way he needs without him knowing it either. I highly recommend this book to men and women but especially women so you can really understand your man and be the wife or partner your man needs and in return your man will have the utmost love and respect for you. A must read!

Most men hold back their emotions out of fear of rejection and criticism, I know I've been guilty of this from time to time. However, this book can help all men feel more comfortable expressing themselves after reading all the men that express their emotions in the book and how it enriches their lives. This book is incredible and you'll want to read it again and again!

Like the author, I've invested a lot of time reviewing ToC, systems thinking, lean, etc. Only recently have I taken an interest in Cynefin, and I've had some difficulty putting the pieces together from the various lectures and blog posts. This book filled in a number of blanks for me, and I think I have an idea about how to proceed with the concepts in my organization. Of particular importance was the focus on portfolio design for both Complex and Complicated domains (e.g., experiment design in Complex, importance of diversity/naivety in Complicated). There are many things I don't understand yet, but the foundation was helpfully provided in this book.

About the Author

Mark Michaelis is founder of IntelliTect, where he serves as its Chief Technical Architect and trainer. For nearly two decades he has been a Microsoft MVP, and he is also a Microsoft Regional Director. Michaelis serves on several Microsoft software design review teams, including C#, Azure, SharePoint, and Visual Studio ALM. He speaks at developer conferences and has written numerous books.

 

Eric Lippert is developer on the C# analysis team at Coverity/Synopsys, was previously principal developer on Microsoft’s C# compiler team and a member of its C# language design team. During his 16 years at Microsoft, he also helped design and implement VBScript, JScript, Windows Script Host, and Visual Studio Tools for Office, and served on ECMA’s JavaScript standardization committee.

This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features By Mark Davis I have to start out by saying I'm a big fan of Mark Michaelis and have had the pleasure of hearing him speak and a .NET User Group meeting. At that time his book was called Essential C# 3.0 for .NET framework 3.5.I'm a consultant and this is crucial material to help prepare me for technical interviews and just overall day-day coding examples. Examples are clean and concise. This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features. I have to say I'm lagging a bit on all the new changes so I was excited to find out that this book just released an update for C# version 6.There have been many improvements in the language since the 3.0 book and this book has outlined those changes in a rather unique way. There is a main index listing all keywords and then a "topics" index organized by language version number. We also get the added benefit version tags, highlighting the version number within the text of the book. The versions are interlaced sequentially in a chapter rather than segmented out. That is you start out by reading about anonymous methods (C# 2.0) and segue in lambdas (C# 3.0) by the end of the chapter you are reading about a (C# 5.0) improvement called capturing loop variables. In this way, you see the evolution of the language. Really cool.The C#/.NET version tags are very helpful. I typically skip the introduction because I already know all that basic stuff but saw a 6.0 version tag with a little gem called "string interpolation" on page 20 - It's a shorthand way of coding string.Format. I would have missed the new feature had it not been for the tag.The C# version number is clearly highlighted so you know at all times what version you are reading about. If you need to find a specific feature use the full index. If you want to find new features to a specific language version, then use "Index of 6.0 Topics", "Index of 5.0 Topics", etc. This is the best approach to trying to index the massive amount of info. And this book is massive! I'm enjoying going thru it again as a review, but more importantly as an enhancement to my 6.0 knowledge. Thank you guys for this recent update.

I've been doing C# constantly since 1.0, so I only care what's in C# 6.0 for my current project. But that's a tiny complaint; the book is thorough and very helpful. Worth every dollar.Addendum, 9-Jan 2016The book was quite helpful modernizing a largish VS 2008 project to vs 2015. It was relatively easy to search for "C# 6" to find all the ways to improve the applications.

I was going from book-to-book on Safari, looking for information about multithreading and thread synchronization when I came across this book. The explanation of these two topics was so good I knew I had to read the whole book.The book does have an unusual layout. It describes how C# has changed since version 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and C# 6.0. If you want to "really" know C#, by all means- buy this book. Thank you, Mr Michaelis.

About the Author

Lauren Cornell is a Curator at the New Museum. Previously, she served as Executive Director of Rhizome, worked on the Andy Warhol Project at the Whitney Museum, and directed Ocularis, a microcinema in Brooklyn. Ed Halter is a founder and director of Light Industry, a venue for film and electronic art in Brooklyn, and teaches in the Film and Electronic Arts Department at Bard College. He has curated screenings and exhibitions at such venues as MoMA P.S.1, the Tate Modern, and the 2012 Whitney Biennial.

I giggled my way through "Couplehood" I cried with laughter through "Babyhood" and couldn't wait to get my hands on "Parenthood"When it finally arrived at my door today I put down what I was currently reading and dug right in. I have to say, I'm not certain my hopes were entirely met. That isn't to say it wasn't good, or funny. It absolutely was. But I think this book was much different from his others...it was less about humor and more about thoughtful story telling. There seemed to be more nostalgia than laughs. Which, as I said, wasn't a bad thing, just not what I had come to expect from Mr. Reiser. This however, shouldn't have been a surprise. It's been a very long time since his last book came out. He's gone from a new parent to being midway into getting his youngest son out of school. I suppose it was time for the nostalgia to come in.While I didn't find as many gut busting laugh out loud moments in this book, there were some, and what replaced those moments was something just as fine....something you can relate to no matter what stage of life you're in..the only requirement is that, at some point in your life, you've had a family.The book illustrates the idea we've all held at some point, that familyhood, the process of being a family is a very delicate, complicated and flawed thing. That no matter how much you try to change the things you felt were wrong in your own family growing up, life will absolutely do all it can to thwart your plans and take your plans and throw them out the window, but that's okay too. It gives you the idea that familyhood isn't so much a destination as a journey, as worn as that sounds....that life is for the living, not the planning..and besides, we have no idea where we're going anyway.I found this book especially fun to read being in the stage of life that I am now, a parent of a school age child who's finding his own life, apart from mine and my struggles to try to be a parent, but feeling like I'm constantly faced with impossible choices. ....in fact, there is a part in the book where one of his sons announces that he now knows certain cuss words.. this same situation happened with my son literally a few months ago. It was comforting to know I'm not the only one faced with that particular conversation, and all the other conversations that must happen with the ongoing struggle to decide how much is enough, how much is too much and how much is downright neglectful parenting. Again, his answer is there is no answer, you do what you can to keep your family on course as best you can...there'll be some over steer, some under steer, but as long as you maintain the same general direction as you intended, you'll all get where you're supposed to be eventually.So, in summary, I think you'll really only enjoy this book on 1 condition....if you've ever had, ever thought of having or ever will have your own family.... other than that, skip it.

When I was sitting there reading his book (so while reading his book, I went back and read his other books, just to be on top of things) I was actually revaluating my life! I was thinkng, where has my life gown too, what have I done personally to make my life a living example to my kids (if I ever have any)? He really makes you think about your own life and that what I love about him. His show MAD ABOUT YOU, made me think of my life as well. Good for you Paul Reiser!!

I so enjoyed "Couplehood" from Reiser some 15 (or more) years ago, that I shared it with many of my friends, all of whom found it as hilarious as I did. In the midst of having my own babies at the time he published "Babyhood", I completely missed out on that one. I was THRILLED to see he went on to write Familyhood! Reiser is such a gifted writer and humorist, that I laughed out loud for much of the book. He writes with the same sarcastic humor I so enjoyed in Couplehood. So many of his stories and analogies hit home, as I now have a family of five. He shared personal, heart felt stories that reflect what most in his generation are going through: looking at our past through the eyes of our aging parents, and living our childhoods all over again through our own children's lives. While I laughed hysterically at his "Dr. Nutjob" story, I cried with happiness at the joy and fulfillment he experienced with his younger son at the beach. He is SO relatable that it felt like he was an old friend, drinking coffee in my kitchen updating me on his life.I really, really enjoyed this book. I have been in a book club, who's job it seems, is to pick the most heart-wrenching and heavy stories lately. This book was a deeply needed breath of fresh air. I hope Reiser can find another vehicle to continue reaching out to his audience.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well crafted poetry and an artful insight into not only the human condition, but New England, as we pass through each season.My favorite was "The Common in Summer". This poem is based on an area in my town (Salem, MA) that I travel through each day on my way to work. Though short and sweet, it was a fantastic picture of the quiet and beauty that is the Common.I will continue to enjoy this book for many years to come. Great work by an artful writer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sonnets, ballads, couplets, free verse: a journey with faith By Jim Bennett It is impossible not to like Burris. From her introduction, where she recaps too many poets' experiences in submission to publishers and critics, she had me hooked: there are two poems poking fun at intellectuals, in the introduction itself.Few of Burris' poems are purely secular, and this atheist enjoyed pretty much every piece here. We have been given some twelve sonnets, nineteen ballads, eleven rhymed-couplet pieces, three irregular, and nineteen free verse poems. I will cover each genre in Burris' order.Sonnets first: in Upon a 12th Grade Reading Assignment: "They marched with torches to arrest the Light,/ But this alone was not the irony./ The band and captain also bound Him tight,/ Though He had only come to set them free." In the double sonnet Westminster Abbey we are reminded of the temple and the moneychangers, but in modern, personal terms: "Men talked and roamed as if within a store./ The register closed, then opened once more;/ The coins fell, they echoed, this plea was made:/ "A postcard for your trip?"..."In For a Grandmother (about faith facing death) this: "And as we meet today to say goodbye,/ Another voice cries welcome from the sky."Ballads next. In Not By Bread, these amazing images open the poem: "The hunger prowled with livid steps/ In stomach's empty tomb,/ And Satan prowled with watchful feet/ In desert's barren womb."Town of Truthfulness is an incredible short, didactic, gut-punching ballad. No quotes here, buy the book and read this poem.For personal (religious) experience, in I Lived as One we find this: "I lived as one who thinks that care/ Can add a moment to her life," and this: "I taught as one who does not learn,/ Whose eyes are shut against the light."Loss does not escape Burris either; in the longer ballad Once We Whispered you will find this poignancy: "What dreams do you envision now/ Where lifeless you must lie?/ Long has lived the death that I/ Forbade you then to die." This is not trivial work.God did not Make the World to Turn is actually a love poem with nice images: "If quiet shadows kiss the ground/ Then darling, why not we?/ Butterflies do dance around,/ And sunrise hugs the sea." Apparently religious poems can be sexy too.In the astonishing poem In Memoriam the unnamed loss is keenly felt. "We like to think that death is finely scripted" but of course it is never fully expected.The poem On Water reminds me of Archibald MacLeish's What Any Lover Learns. MacLeish uses water as a metaphor for a love/rejection situation; Burris uses water as an apparently meek, but in fact implacable force.If you're looking for social commentary, turn to How Long and you will find it. If you're looking for a stunning religious / social commentary poem in four lines, read Shadow. No quotes to spoil the surprise here.One favourite here is Imprint. When this atheist is captured by a religious poem, you know the poet has exerted significant power in her (or his) writing. Kudos for Burris here. Again in The Wind Swept (which is not religious at all) the final line is a punch in the gut. This is powerful writing put into verse so relaxed it almost looks careless, until it ambushes you.Couplets next. Another favourite is A Poet's Pain, where we find this: "The words the poet quickly bleeds,/ The words the reader gladly reads,/ The words that cause the weak to swoon,/ Are self-inflicted pity wounds." Burris makes philosophy fun while mocking her own profession. Watch out for the surprise religious conclusion, which is so understated as to sneak into your thoughts stealthily, like an unbidden cat sneaking into a room.In The Paths I am reminded of Stephen Crane's The Wayfarer : `The wayfarer,/ Perceiving the pathway to truth,/ Was struck with astonishment. / It was thickly grown with weeds'. Compare this to Burris: ""A better way by far," I said,/ "The path is clear and lies ahead."/ But as I lift my foot to go,/ I heard a voice..." Burris has put her personal spin on the theme of choosing a path.Another fine love poem is Though Not Divine, a reality check on fantasy versus lasting relationships. Again, in Seeking a Sign, we have neatly exposed the difficulties of faith. Though our beliefs may differ, Burris gives us a keen insight into the not-simple to believe without personal evidence: "I want to watch the parting of the seas,/ The shadow moving back its ten degrees."Sundry Forms: Contrast in Haiku is a neat metaphor which I won't spoil with a quote. Two haikus, six lines, subtly exploring the human condition.Free Verse: interestingly, Burris here pays homage to Stephen Crane, whom I mentioned above (before I got to this section). I was wondering what would happen if this person chose to write in free verse, and in This We Value Now, I found out: "Strange, how this once polished tool/ should become an oil-less machine, /moving, if it moves at all,/ on the fumes of some disintegrating past," and the poem gets even better after that, a strong piece of social commentary.Again in The Sparrow, Burris brings her world view into your mind and gut: "Dead./ And the only thought that ran into my head/ Was this: "Am I not worth more to You/ Than many sparrows?" I cannot properly set up this snippet without quoting the entire poem; read this one early.In My Grace, Burris explores the inequality of human life on earth, asking questions we all, if at all aware of world hunger and drought, must have asked ourselves: am I well off because they are not?In the title poem, A Greater Sound by Far, you will be seduced by Burris' views on racism, sacrifice, and freedom under God. I defy anyone to read this and remain unmoved.If you're scrolling for the tiny carps, few they are. In a couple of places this person would have chosen to omit a small word for the sake of the rhythm. There must be at least one typo. Tiny carps indeed.Reviewing a work of this size and quality can be challenging, in that I have to select enough material to give you, our audience, an insight into Burris' work - but there are simply too many fine poems to quote them all. Gray World is a fine example of a myth-like exploration of the human condition. My Mind is a Fine Machine is a unique and touching poem of personal loss. These two poems are definitely favourites in this work. If you're looking for social irony, turn to In God We Trust.To Be a Modern Poet recapitulates Burris' earlier comments on the choice of self-publishing. My personal experience being equally dispiriting, still I was surprised at the careful cynicism of this poem, with which I agree, every word. It is possible to write sensationally and/or conventionally. Burris has chosen to write from a position of integrity and in a style of honest personal accuracy. It helps that she brings enormous talent to her task.In Choice, Burris puts her opinion out by not mentioning it, just showing the results of other choices. Brutal. In Four Seasons we have a tour-de-force which reminds me of the old adage, `life is hard, then you die.' Burris does much better than this in this longer, four-part poem, for example this: "Your name I will always remember,/ It is the meaning I have forgotten."How does Burris get five stars from this curmudgeon? My personal guidelines, when doing an `official' KBR review, are as follows: five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. I'm looking at sonnets, couplet rhymes, ballads, and free verse. Pretty much all roughly equal to best in genre. Five stars it is, and for those who enjoy (or like me, when it's very well done, go along with) a religious point of view, this is an exceptional work. A Great Sound By Karen I found the poems in A Greater Sound by Far to be a refreshing resurgence of traditional forms as well as a presentation of free verses of substance. The powerful messages in most of the poems in this compilation by Skylar Burris can be clearly understood by the reader without being trite. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the introduction as well as the poetry that follows. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys traditional forms, savors comprehensible thought-provoking themes, and appreciates poetry with a moral and/or religious base.

I especially like poetry books whose authors are not afraid to try the old forms as well as the new. Burris's poems are like that. Fun, experimental, and some punch you in the gut.My favorite poem "by far" in this collection is The Wind Swept, which starts, "The wind swept gently across the fields we'd walked together...."And ends...well, you'll have to buy the book and read it! My favorite poem is a gut puncher.

It was an easy, humorous book with a light flow to what can sometimes be a heavy subject. So many times through the book, I felt as if Julie Selby were talking about my personal journey. When struggling to have a baby, it's always nice to know someone else out there shares your struggles. I highly recommend!

By Lisa Infertility Insanity is a thoroughly engaging book that you will not be able to put down easily. You'll want to read it in just a couple of sittings as I did. Julie Selby's writing is very personal, honest and witty. At times you feel like she is one of your girlfriends talking to you over a glass of wine about her touching, insane pregnancy odyssey. Her personal journey is so very unique but one that many women will be able to connect with on so many levels. Her tenacity, focus and exhaustive Google research skills are admirable and impressive – she really leaves no stone unturned in trying to understand her unexplained infertility and she shares her knowledge within. Selby’s own story interwoven with the stories of her group of friends going through their conception and pregnancy journeys at the same time is so original and relatable. I laughed out loud in many sections and cheered in others. I highly recommend this entertaining and helpful book for everyone regardless of whether you are pregnant, not even trying to get pregnant or don’t have children. Buy it for yourself and a friend.

I laughed out loud at some points and cringed in others. A fully engaging ( and fast) read that really did help me understand the ups and downs of the "unfertiles" and gave me a new appreciation for all of these "miracle babies" and the determined parents who (eventually) create them. Julie Selby's writing is honest and brave and I can only guess it would be an extremely helpful book to read for others either on this journey, or who have friends and family who are. It was for me. Thanks to Julie Selby for sharing this intimate experience with the world.
