By Kathi Macias When I received a copy of this book I made the mistake of starting it before I had met some of my most pressing deadlines. I am now playing "catch-up" with those deadlines because once I started reading WATCHING THE TREE LIMBS I couldn't stop until I was done. Not only is this a captivating and moving story, but the writing is exquisite. In this modern age of publishing where selling platforms often take precedence over writing ability, it's exciting to find someone who is a writer first, an author second. Mary's heart so obviously "feels" her words before she pens them that reading her work is akin to listening to a perfectly orchestrated symphony. Thank you, Mary, for one of the best reads I've had in a very long time!

By Pamela Meyers Mary DeMuth calls her blog Relevant Prose, and this is a more than apt description of her debut fiction novel, Watching Tree Limbs. Mary's strong voice along with equally strong characterizations drew me in immediately. Written from the perspective of the nine-year-old protagnoist, Mara, you feel her pain and want to reach into the pages and make things right for her. Shake the adults in her life and say "Don't you see what you are doing to this child?". Yet the only One who can make things right for Mara is God and God does reach in and bring people to Mara that point her to Him. You will fall in love with Camilla, Mara's rhyming and all-knowing best friend; Denim, the mysterious man on the radio who wants to make things right in the small East Texas town of Burl; and Zady, the housekeeper/surrogate mother that God uses most of all to shows her His love. This is a book I will long remember, days after reading the last sentence.

All I wanted to do was to begin this book, so I picked it up yesterday around 2:00. I finished the thing around 6:00.Crimoney! I'm a pastor. I'm supposed to spend my Saturday preparing for Sunday. I was just going to read a chapter or two to pass some time. Now I've neglected my wife, my kids and the church!Folks, I just couldn't put this thing down. It's a good read on a tough and uncomfy subject. Every good story has a good villain and and an underdog in need of justice. Such is the case with this one. My heart's cry for resolution, salvation and justice would not let me drop this book 'til I'd polished it off.Hats off to Mary DeMuth. She knows how to make a book not only mysterious but meaningful. The subtle reference to the book of Ruth near the end of the story is masterful.Gotta go. The honey-do list has grown.

Stanfield I had the pleasure of purchasing this book directly from the author, so I will not show as a "Verified Purchase". I was also able to meet his beautiful daughters and see first-hand what an amazing father that Nate is to his girls. Daddy's Hands is a wonderful ending to the series, and a bit of a roller coaster ride. You can see that Nate continues to grow as a person, father, and an author. I found myself angry at times, and then just when things seemed to take a turn for the better, he was hit with yet another battle to fight. I found myself in tears reading about Nate's mom, it reminded me to take advantage of every single moment I have with my parents because they will not be here forever. I too, grew up in a broken home and one particular line in this book that I could really identify with, “Up until then, my opinions were formed to fit the opinion of my nearest parent- most of the time". My parents fought many times and I usually spent time hearing what the other had done wrong, kids should never have to bear that burden. I applaud Nate as a father, for always keeping his children's best interest at heart; I think all parents could learn something from him. I look forward to continuing to follow this story and I long for the day when I hear that he is finally granted what he is beyond deserving of, custody of ALL of his children.

Powerful storytelling By ChangYai In Nowhere To Be Home: Narratives From Survivors of Burma's Military Regime, from the Voice of Witness Series, editors Maggie Lemere and Zoe West often manage to make you feel that each of the twenty two storytellers from Burma in the volume are sitting next to you telling you their story. Often in heartbreaking fashion, each story, like a mini-biography, retells the personal details of suffering, persecution and abuse under a brutal Burmese military regime.While every story in the volume divulges a sense of individual personality and reflects the diversity of Burma's people, everyone, regardless of whether they are now living in Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, the USA or Burma, is united through their shared experiences of loss, disappointment and displacement as subjects rather than citizens of a country that deprives them of their most basic human rights and the freedom necessary to live a decent life. This is the main logical thread that runs throughout.In one account from near Rangoon in Burma, we hear from an ordinary sounding fifty year old, Auntie Hla, who lost her son and home during Cyclone Nargis. The government obstructed supplies of aid and did nothing to help rebuild her home. We hear how she has been forced to move on but has found a new home living with others while she has also managed to look upon her experience as fortunate compared to others during the national disaster.Contrast Aunti Hla's story with that of thirty-three year old Knoo Know, an ethnic Kachin and son of a famous rebel soldier from northern Burma, who now lives and works in Mae Sot on the border of Thailand-Burma. His experience as a gay man in Burma made it difficult to pursue his dreams of a happy life inside the country so he has become a human rights and GLBT rights activist. He seeks to heal the narrow-mindedness of divisions that wrack the country through education and the many social networks in which he now participates.Other penetrating narratives in the book discuss the difficulties of survival in a Bangladesh refugee camp for the oft-maligned and displaced Rohingya of the Arakan State in Burma, the disregard for judicial process by police in Malaysia when dealing with their now significant population of Chin refugees, the experiences of refugee monks in exile and the insightful perspectives offered by former soldiers. The story of Yun, a sixteen year-old in Rangoon, acquaints us with the personal trials and hopes of a sex worker.The style of the book does not try to draw you in through overtly dramatic literary machinery. The "I" in each of these voices also gives a good sense of what is normal in their lives and what keeps them motivated. If the goal of the editors is to assist in opening a "dialogue" as they say in the introduction, it is difficult to measure this success. However, the introductory heading that reads, "There Is Enormous Power In Listening," is spot on.The words of each storyteller reveal something very personal about the effect on their lives of being from Burma. It is very true that the over simplified maps could offer more detail about the places described and perhaps the stories could be a little less heart-wrenching, but that might take the book away from the strength of the volume; the emotional power evoked by the stories themselves.

By VBOB Maggie Lemere and Zoe West did an excellent job on compiling the stories of 22 survivors of the Burmese military regime. The interview conducted in refugees camps and some secretly within the country. The victims are young some are child soldiers kidnapped by the Tatmadaw or the Burmese army to swell the ranks of the brutal Burmese army. Many are ethnic people of Kachins,Shans,Chins, Karens who were systematically forced by the army to be porters or forced laborers. There are no rights in this country for many in the courts. I feel sad for the very young children that ends up as sex worker. Rape is a policy against minority women in the rural areas as witnessed by Fakima who is a muslim women of the Rakhine region. After I read this book I feel a need to help my fellow country men from the grip of fear and poverty that hang over my native country.

It reminded me a lot of those inspirational books from Mountain Ridge Arts (I think) that you can buy at a Hallmark store, and I love to read those when I'm sad. The book had poetry in it that was sad, but ultimately the poetry was inspiring and uplifting. The artwork was simple, yet whimsical and meaningful to the poetry. I especially liked her poem "No Reason," which is a plea for one not to kill oneself. I also liked that many of her poems were like affirmations, positive and uplifting things to remind yourself of throughout the day. I also liked how the author encourages readers to copy passages from her poetry to read throughout the day and remind oneself of for personal growth. The author's healing poems are easily able to relate to, especially in the way that she describes how people hide their pain behind smiles. I recommend this book of poetry to anyone who is looking to heal, who likes those books I mentioned above, and who are looking for good, affirmative poems to help build oneself up. I also love the fact that her poetry rhymes!

It has so much action and a great plot. If you love mystery you'll definitely love this. Nancy starts out on a tour that's hosted by Emerson College (Ned, Burt, and Dave's college) They go to Germany and apparently the professor is also a secret agent. He has something hidden in his bag and he lets the thief steal it. Of course, not knowing his plan, Nancy got it back, but that led to Nancy being sucked into another mystery. :D You'll absolutely adore this classic book.

Basic, common sense on what a parent should and should not do.If you did not know that smoking in front of your child is bad, then this book is for you. You will learn a lot.

I do have some first time dads coming up in my family to whom I can pass along this needed information. Makes me look smart. I liked this book. It was funny but at the same time, right on. I like how the author, Willard Shaw, a grandpa as well as me, outlined his book. Lots of good tips here for the First Year, Ages Two & Three, School Years, and beyond. A dad simply has to roll with the punches. Parenting is easy, it's life that is hard, says Mr. Shaw. There is a section of this book about setting goals that works in all walks of life, but what really resonated with me is to just let life happen and enjoy each and every moment of it. The secret to me is to enjoy this wonderful time in life.

Love it By Tracey A I have just got this and all I can say wish I had this book when I was pregnant .... these ladies have hit the nail on the head with everything I have read so far. Its real and whether you have a newborn or olders kids there will be something in here for you. Its my 4 year olds big 5 Birthday later this year and the chapter on kids parties was brilliant and had me chuckling away :-) Buy it you won't be disappointed.

I already have children so I can reflect my life with what the book teaches, and I certainly agree with all the points mentioned. Children are such a joy and I couldn't even imagine life without them.

Nancy, George, and Bess go to visit Aunt Eloise in New York, only to find themselves head over heels in mysteries. Whether it's missing gowns at a fashion show, a missing reporter brother, or a pair of impostors (hence the title), Nancy proves she is up for the task. Loose ends are wound up nicely and everything works out right in the end. A good mystery, especially for one so late in the series. Worth a buy.

By Dr P Xuereb There is no such thing as an ideal parent but there is a possibility to create an ideal growing environment for our children. Love, freedom, rhythm, routine, help our little ones grow into happy and inspired adults. The Alchemy of Love Conscious Parenting Course is full of inspiring daily and weekly exercises and tools that reminded me at all times to come back to love as the guiding principle for parenting. The exercises were fun to do with my kids and during the course we created a very special rapport that was full of fun, creativity and sharing.I have two kids, one who is 4 and the other 16, and when I am not being a university professor in my professional life, I spend a lot of time as their personal taxi driver taking them from one activity to the other -- so there were areas within my life that I needed to protect with my partner and my friends. These were the areas that I struggled with most throughout the course. Finding the time for deeper contact with my loved ones remained a great challenge, but at least I became aware that I have a problem that needs my attention. When defining my true goals in this area, I kept coming back to this issue -- so I know I need to create space and time within my life for deeper contacts with my partner, friends and family.The parenting is very demanding, and I agree with Nuit that it is (probably!) the most difficult job in the world, so I am very happy to have come across this course and that I had enough willpower to stick with it for the full 12 weeks. If you're into this kind of thing, I would look for more stuff from this author!Highly recommended!

By Jim Kalbach This book fundamentally changed my perspective on design research. Presumptive Design (PrD) teaches us to embrace being wrong. As the authors write, "Everything you know about the future is wrong." How true! This confirms a suspicion I've had for a while: it's OK to start the design process with a design artifact. Just put it out there. Then, learn about your assumptions and hypotheses from first-hand user feedback - immediately. Design is not about nailing it from the beginning, but how you become less wrong as you go along.This book is well-researched and lays out the theoretical framework for PrD in detail. The authors bring decades of experience to the topic. A clear approach to facilitating PrD and running collaborative design sessions is described in detail in Chapters 14-16. Keep in mind that the purpose of PrD is "to elicit and provoke conversations with stakeholders about their mental models through the use of a throwaway artifact." In other words, PrD engages others in a dialog about design. But it also instills a much-needed sense of humility and learning into the organization: it's OK to be wrong.Planning and executing don't have to be separate activities in design. Thinking and doing are not discrete steps. Instead, it's thinking BY doing. As Mike Tyson once said, "Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face." PrD shows us how to take that first bold step as quickly as possible to form a design plan that is based on reality, not on hallucinations dreamed up around a boardroom table.
