From the Author When Linda and I set out to write this book, we were determined to make it as true to life as possible. Readers will find many examples of the truly frustrating and discouraging moments in parenting: children whining, fighting with their parents and their siblings, and ignoring their responsibilities that illustrate family problems familiar to parents everywhere! Fortunately, Linda and I had decades of experience as parents, parent educators and parent counselors to draw upon when writing this book. About the Author Linda E. Jessup, R.N., M.P.H., F.N.P., founded the Parent Encouragement Program (PEP) in 1982 and directed it until 2000. A family nurse practitioner with a background in anthropology, Linda is fascinated by the pursuit of healthy relationships among people of every age and culture. Once a “desperate parent” herself, Linda discovered an Adlerian Family Resource Education Center in 1975. Using this practical and inspiring approach, she and her husband raised three children, while adding four foster teenagers to the mix, one of whom they adopted. Linda founded PEP and developed most of the curricula and materials used in PEP classes today. While growing PEP, Linda taught, wrote, and networked; hosted a radio talk show for nine years; and presented as many as 50 original parenting talks and workshops per year. Linda has published numerous columns for parenting newsletters and magazines, as well as writing chapters and larger segments of nursing books. Emory Luce Baldwin, M.S., Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist, has been a parent educator for over 20 years. She brought her long-standing interest in families and parenting to PEP in 1993, when she was looking for new skills to help her with her own children. Since then, she has taught hundreds of classes for parents of babies, teenagers, and all ages in between. As one of PEP’s most experienced class leaders, Emory frequently facilitates Open Forum Counseling, an Adlerian model in which she works with a family before an audience of parents and children who wish to improve their response to a common family problem such as power struggles or messy rooms. By Elementary School Counselor Parenting with Courage and Uncommon Sense should be by the bedside of every exhausted and challenged parent! Read a little every evening and change the dynamics of your home. The book offers helpful insights into the child’s misbehavior goals and examples of ways to redirect behavior. It gives steps to creating a family-centered home where each member assumes responsibility and treats others with respect. Children learn responsibility by helping with age-appropriate chores while gaining confidence, developing problem-solving skills and self-confidence as they grow toward independence and self-respect. It’s a training manual to help children meet real life. There are many authentic examples of parents and children which make it easy for parents to adapt to their situation.

I still enjoyed reading this book By mom of 3 Though my children are grown, I still enjoyed reading this book, and felt I learned a lot about parenting styles and what works and what doesn't work in different situations. The book employed examples which made it easy to understand and also included Takeaway Points at the end of each chapter which helped to summarize the material. It was well written and covered a variety of topics from birth order to discipline versus punishment, and praise versus encouragement. Parenting is tough and there are always things we can learn and certainly ways we can strive to be better at one of the most important jobs we will ever have. Would definitely recommend.

By Rockville Reader I've read Parenting with Courage and UNcommon Sense from cover to cover. It is chock full of very practical strategies and advice to encourage responsible, cooperative and contributing children, which is exactly what I'm always looking for. I want the words to say or the actions to do in challenging situations. This book provides both! It also provides some insights that I've never run across before in all the reading I've done about children--insights that really made a difference in fostering cooperation from my children.
